Back in the days of the pandemic, I ran across the analysis of Belgian psychologist Mattias Desmet who argued that a mass formation was developing in Western nations whereby public discourse was dominated by a peculiar type of absurdist groupthink. Those who dared to challenge the narrative were subjected to a barrage of criticism while strange ritualistic behaviors became the order of the day. I recently applied Desmet’s analysis to the current Canadian election and came to this conclusion: Canada is in the grip of another mass formation.
The problem is that this focus of anxiety, this latest mass formation, has led to the psychological obliteration of the Liberal Party’s governance record of the last decade. The palpable disappointment and sense of betrayal among voters which previously led to Justin Trudeau’s own cabinet publicly demanding his resignation has seemingly vanished. The new object of anxiety, Donald Trump, demands every bit of the masses’ attention to the exclusion of all other considerations. What matters is not that Canadians think critically, but that they think together, even if that thinking embraces blatant contradictions.
Yup. In short, it’s how to get Canadians to not be stupid in their voting without hurting their feelings. Feelings are very important to Canadians.

I noticed something, driving around Dundas and Burlington.
First, for such a momentous election, there are VERY FEW lawn signs. Very, freaking, few. You’d barely know an election had been called. That’s pretty disturbing. The Normies are feeling very distrustful of their neighbors.
Second, a lot of the Liberal ones you do see are displayed with great defiance. There will be a Liberal sign, and a pink rainbow flag, and a “support our nurses!!!” sign, and so forth. They’re NUTTERS. The ones that bought the whole package. Conservative signs less so, but there is a guy out my way with MAGA flags and a Conservative sign, he clearly does not give a F- these days. Another nutter, daring the universe to come and get him.
So far, zero NDPee signs. I haven’t been over on the Hamilton Mountain lately, so I don’t know how it is in the Heart of Darkness as it were, but all around elsewhere, zero commies are self-identifying. They appear to have gotten the memo.
How’s it going to go? #PP is winning this. You can tell by the crowds at rallies. Even playing devil’s advocate and saying the #PP crowds are just as fake and bussed-in as #CarkMarney’s, that’s a BIG crowd. Thank Donald Trump for the massive shift of NDP voters to the liberals. The tariffs alone weren’t enough to tip the scale. This would have been a much more balanced election if he hadn’t shot his mouth off about making Canada the 51st state.
I’ve been watching the polls out of some kind of morbid fascination with propaganda. The Conservatives haven’t really dropped in popularity if you discount heavily biased polling companies like EKOS. The big shift, as you mentioned, is the loss of support of the other parties to the Liberals.
I can believe that the NDP have lost support to the Liberals because of Singh’s leadership but the Bloc shifting heavily to the Liberals looks odd. I have difficulty believing that Carney has won over Bloc voters. He’s not an inspiring communicator in either language but particularly not in French. It’s possible, I suppose.
They were always going to run against Trump. Also when it was clear the CPC was approaching victory the NDP voters were going to support the Liberals. I would be very surprised if the bloc doesn’t remain strong in Quebec. There is nothing they would like better than holding the balance of power. It has been my contention the CPC would not win and stated so here before. I will grant you Trump’s comments made it much easier for the Liberals. However, much of that CPC support was soft. We have been looking on line at housing options. If Carney gets elected we’re gone. I can’t live with people who think on line censorship, proHAMAS demonstrations, 60% taxation and rent only modular housing in 15 minute cities is acceptable and that climate change is actually science.

Justin. You’ve inspired an idea for my own CALXIT … that I’ll buy some acreage … 35-50 ac. And set up my own Habitat for conservative retiree humanity on that acreage. Build a number of outbuilding ADU’s or simply subdivide parcels that can hold multiple homes … not too dense. Nothing closer than a 15 min. walk through the weeds to a neighboring home. Work out a rental or purchase agreement to fund the homes. Maybe even start a give send go to fund unit materials. The residents can all pitch in and do what they can.
