Heading For The Exits

When even the CBC admits it, things must be even worse that anyone could imagine.

… business investment dropped off in 2015 when oil prices plunged and have remained stubbornly low ever since.

Economists warn that has weakened the Canadian economy and gives Canada less cushion to weather a trade war.

“GDP per capita has declined for eight of the past nine quarters, and business investment has been stagnant. Both cyclically and structurally, Canada’s economy is not well positioned to absorb a shock of this scale,” wrote Royal Bank’s chief economist Frances Donald and deputy chief economist Nathan Janzen.

  1. In CBC’s world, we are in quicksand for two reasons: (a) plain old unfortunate circumstances that are really no one’s fault might have brought us close to the edge, but (b) it was mean old bully-boy Trump who pushed us in.

    1. I have to agree. The Ceeb makes no mention of Justatwit’s violently anti-business, anti-investment agenda pursued over the past decade. It makes no mention of Justatwit’s demolition of all private investment into new energy infrastructure for oil and gas. It makes no mention of the LPC’s active political war against Canadian oil and gas production. The Ceeb makes no mention of the LPC’s history of hostile, anti-American rhetoric.

Fact is, you could level Ottawa to the ground, eliminate all its bureaucrats, legislation and regulation, and all Canadians would be better off than they are now.

      1. Maybe the government arbitrarily seizing bank accounts without due process and all the big boy banks going right along with it might have an effect on foreign investor’s perceptions.

    1. We’re getting two apparently. TMX is coming in at triple the cost and many years late. Supposedly we will also be getting Coastal GasLink, also many years late and vastly over-budget.

      1. there were six at one time . long time work for the liberals started killing in 1976 with the mackenzie valley line , more than 10 TCF stranded there . plus all the beaufort structures seen but never drilled . Esso put in Normal Wells without a peep to the press.

still have keystone half built and lots of oil sands plants never started .

50 and 60 year timelines on these projects , longer than Elons path to Mars

      2. TMX is already operational, albeit at – as you say – triple cost because the federales are 1) incompetent at building anything; and 2) allowed every environmental protest – however stupid – to be given a full hearing which stopped the building of the pipeline numerous times.
However, despite the federales’ best efforts, the crews en site during the torrential downpours which wreaked havoc in the lower mainland and up the Fraser valley during November, 2022, immediately worked to get food to isolated communities and used their heavy equipment to help get the roads back. Not that the federales would ever acknowledge their hard work and help in restoring land communications to a fair few vulnerable communities.

  2. And they have peter McKay on.
Another one who caused the problems and is about as helpful as a kick in the head.

  3. Still too many Canadians getting their information from the legacy media, and 100% of the legacy media gets funding laundered through the liberal party.

  4. Meanwhile Trump has:

    Ended the Israeli hostage crisis
About to end the Ukraine war

Will any Canadian Media mention that? crickets.

    1. Yes. When the powers that be have to explain away Canada’s becoming a retirement community for “Ukrainian” Nazis. Again.

  5. yup Jamie has nailed it.
    Classic CBC propaganda.

When even the most obtuse Canadian can see the lack of investment, lack of planning for a productive future and the systemic failure of Canadian Governments.
When corporation after corporation has stated they are investing, other than Canada, because of insane rules , regulation and massive uncertainty..Caused by our Federal Government!

.CBC finally admits the obvious, with careful misdirection to imply, that this could have happened to anyone..
    And Orange Man Bad.

If our dear Leaders of Ottawa were not actively seeking to destroy the country?
What would they have done differently?
And now President Trump has pointed out our pathetic weakness, these same destroyer are going to “Help fix” the mess they deliberately created?
    Time for some adults.
Does Can Ahh Duh house any?

  6. So 25% tarriffs are very bad. Well ,well. I know that Canada tarriffs steel. I know this because someone close to me has been in talks with Canadian government officials on trade and antitrust hearings on steel. ( these products were not being imported from the US) but So I wanted to know if Canada tarriffs US. steel . Google searchs only provided information on the nasty tarriffs Trump is threatening. I happened to watch a podcast from “mistersunshinebaby”. I can’t verify it ,but according to information he provided Canada has been tarrifing US steel 25% and aluminum 45% for years. He also said Trump has pivoted and in the name of fair trade will only tarrif to the same level the US is tarriffed. Looks to me like he has been several steps ahead from the beginning.

    1. Canada’s tariffs on specific products that are being “dumped” can be found here: https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/sima-lmsi/mif-mev/menu-eng.html

who knew that Ukraine was dumping steel plate(PLA6) into Canada.

The other problem being that once the steel gets into our system, and “processed” even if the processing is minimal, it becomes “Canadian” Steel. the regulations changed recently, but it’s not clear if that’s going to have any effect on the problem.

      1. JD – wow a very convoluted and difficult to assess site. It did lead me to search duties vrs tariffs. This site leads at least open the possibility that we have at discretion been surcharging 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum . It would require a great deal of research to acquire the full picture.
        https://www.canada.ca/en/global-affairs/news/2019/05/joint-statement-by-the-united-states-and-canada-on-section-232-duties-on-steel-and-aluminum.html
It would not be unlikley 25% and 45% are accurate.

  7. How’s that Border Security doin?
Where are the Giant Fentanyl Lab busts?
Where are the Jihadi arrests at the border?
Why does Canadastan have so many temporary visitors that make up 7% of the population?
When are these illegal “visitors” being removed?
WE ARE AN UNSERIOUS NATION, why would America want us?

  8. We SHOULD be optimistic. We’ve had several years to “keep our powder dry”, especially through the Covid tyranny. We never stopped our thrifty practices as the Covid tyranny withered, as the same government could f3ck us again.
Trump is going to crush this country economically, since everybody (US intelligence) knows the Lieberals are CCP controlled. This is an economic war that this country has no hope to win.
Stock up if you haven’t, convert any cash you have to USD, and hunker down. Uncle Sam means business this time, and his opponents are feminine soy boy virtue signallers.

  9. Yes indeed.
But I want to know; How can I help?
For being passive as President Trump roils our Kleptocracy is not enough for me.

    Dread Covid Theatre.
    The Truckers Protest .
    Endless theft via taxation.
Paying tax on tax on tax.

    Bridges too far.
I want retribution, how can I help Ottawa suffer?

Is it finally time for serious conversations,as to “What kind of Country do we want?”.
A tough conversation for many,as the default is “Just leave me alone”.

“Do not offer to help me and I will not feel the need to polish my hardware and contemplate disposal sites.”

Which does not lead to constructive conversations.
For while the West must separate,an obvious conclusion based on debt, past behaviour from the East and our trade routes,,what do we want and why are we afraid to have this public discussion?

We have run the “Welfare State” experiment for 60 years.
One conclusion: It does not and cannot work.
    For it defies human nature.
    Everyone loses.

We have run the “Big Government is Good” experiment.
    It bankrupted us .
Left us defenceless against government minions.
A confirmation of Human Nature, the worst kind.

So what kind of “More perfect union” do Westerners seek?
Our children have futures, are our future..
What choices are we gifting them?
    The current path is Zimbabwe,Venezuela.
Stripping these children of most all choices except tax slavery.

    Confederated Canada is a fraud.
One we can no longer pretend to believe in.

What citizen wants a nation in which you have no individual rights nor freedoms?
Where a prancing nitwit can be elected Dear Leader repeatedly?

And the theft ,destruction and madness seems without end or any legal means to check, correct it?
Where the rules of engagement shift at “Government” whim?

    I like the USA Constitution.
    Has worked pretty well .
And has a pretty good understanding of Human Nature.
Could we write a better one?
    Should we?
Knowing that we are flawed human beings, who will most always fall short of the lofty goals we set ourselves?
Which leads to the next question..

    Independence..?
    As a nation?
    As a Protectorate,like Puerto Rico?
    As a State?
    Or extention of existing State?
    Other Choice?

Some paths are less work than others..
All require that we be more self governing..are we capable?
Now i exclude “Working inside Confederated Canada” to correct the imbalance..Reform this Kleptocracy”.

As I no longer trust any Eastern Politician..They serve other interests than mine.
And all apparently seek the ruin of Canada and despise the citizens.

After Dread Covid Theatre all masks are off.
And what lay behind them ain’t pretty.

    1. Here’s an inspiring interview, “An independent Alberta would be the envy of the Earth.”

      Q: Federal debt & equalization?
A: We’ll be owed approx $490B at independence.

      Q:Likelihood of repayment?
A: Zero in capital, but land-for-debt-relief deal means they cede us BC and we call it even.

Q: They’d never agree to that.
      A: They won’t have much choice …
