my phone is ringing because everyone wants to get their loads to the US by Jan 17th before Trump tariffs. Our parliament is prorogued for another 2 and a half months. This is a crisis. We won’t be shipping anything south after the 17th and our industries can’t wait for Trudeau.

Let the Liberal Party explain to unemployed Canadians why they let Trudeau ‘rogue the Parliament, with a crisis looming they have known was coming for MONTHS.
This time, Trump has to end all the carveouts permitted only for Canadian banks, media, and dairy products.
If Trump wants to win, he needs to take a play from the Liberal Party’s own playbook and consider two tactics : divide and conquer, a charm offensive.
The regional divisions in Canada are easily exploited. The Liberals have been doing it for decades by abusing Alberta’s and Saskatchewan’s economy to harvest votes in central and eastern Canada. Do the opposite – give favorable treatment to Alberta and Saskatchewan in the trade war. The Liberals will heap even more abuse on Alberta and Saskatchewan because that’s what’s always worked for them.
Follow up with a Charm Offensive that gives Alberta and Saskatchewan what they need. That would be more resource and energy development plus better access to the US and the world for their products. For instance, assisting the 2 provinces in circumventing the annual Canadian port strikes with more railroads, better access to US ports and freer trade for their products. If you could figure out a solution for better healthcare access, that would be welcomed by many. This charm and economic development play is how the Liberals have owned Quebec for decades.
In short, treat Alberta and Saskatchewan the exact opposite of how we’re treated by our Canadian government and the rest of Canada.
A medical visa. It would make Ottawa’s collective heads explode. Trump could destroy the “Canadian medical system” narrative just by releasing the numbers.
Yep, something like that would do it. Perhaps even partnering with Alberta and Saskatchewan to build advanced care hospitals because getting adequate specialized care/ access to specialists and cutting edge diagnostics is an acute problem in the Canadian healthcare model. I’d personally buy health insurance to get quicker access to advanced medicine for severe illnesses.
A decade or so back, a first nation reserve in Saskatchewan floated the idea of building for-profit diagnostic clinics on their reserve to get around the Canadian Healthcare Act. The idea just disappeared but perhaps it’s an idea to look at.
I think he should also . Then maybe the Americans will find out how important Canada is to them if our gutless politicians shut off trade to them for a few days . Remember the bridge blockade that was so important to remove so quickly during the truckers protest . Also the only time Rachel Notley ever did any good when she complained about Alberta crude prices and the price immediately went up. This is a stupid way to resolve issues by threats.
In the end, all provinces will look after their own self interest in a trade war because Canada does not function like a real country. There is no unifying underlying structure. It’s simply a collection of provinces each lobbying the federal government for money and favors at the expense of other provinces.
A game that, because of lack of equal or effective representation in the House of Commons and Senate, Alberta and Saskatchewan always loses. Alberta and Saskatchewan would be better off as an independent nation with strong economic ties to the US and Canada. All the 2 provinces ever needed was a government that doesn’t destroy or hinder their economy to get votes in other provinces.

Alberta and Saskatchewan have products America needs – a virtually unending supply of heavy crude, natgas, the world’s best uranium, massive potash reserves, rare earth metals, rich agriculture land…and to shamelessly plug Saskatchewan – a huge, ready to go diamond mine needing investors.
Alberta and Saskatchewan only need to remove the shackles of Canada to reach their full economic potential .
Phhht. A goodly chunk of Albertans balk at reclaiming their share of the CPP. Immigrants to Alberta bring their political leanings with them. Albertans long ago outsourced the educational system to socialist academics. Righting any ship is a slow and arduous task.
It would likely take some type of political or economic crisis to tip the balance in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Too many are suffering from battered wife syndrome.

Why do you want American banks?
I want an end to favored sectors supporting Liberals in return for favors. Without supply management, and blocking US banks, why would those 2 industries support Liberals? They wouldn’t. Quid pro quo.

I couldn’t find that quote either but it sounds like how Canada functions. In the search I found another quote which talked about marriage but I think applies to nations as well. I just replaced marriage with nations.

Those threads have certainly become chains for Alberta and Saskatchewan. If those chains are broken, the frayed threads that hold Canada together will break completely.

Applying Trumps own words, this is clearly an unfair subsidy of American business. According to Trump, this practice must end.
The US buys $4 million bpd Canadian crude at discount prices and sells it at higher prices.
Selling Canadian oil and gas at low prices to the US hurts American producers, so with Trump logic, oil and gas exports to the U.S. should stop, or be at much higher prices.
The oil trade ‘deficit’ wouldn’t even exist if Northern Gateway and other pipelines like it had been allowed to be built.

This is not a tariff on Canada, this is a tariff on Trudeau and his policies – excessive and sloppy immigration, criminal friendly policies that have led to an explosion of crime and drug trafficking, poor border security and a dismantling of our military.
