    3. At 16% in the polls, I wouldn’t exactly call that a voluntary step down.

      And with the House prorogued, he has ensured that there will be no non-confidence defeat of the government. Singh & the NDP will not support a non-con vote now that Justin is going. The Libs will stay in power until October, giving them enough time to select the next leader.

      I predict that Justin’s resignation will give the Libs a considerable jump in the polls. Liberal policies won’t change with him gone, they all supported his policies, they just wanted him gone because the Libs would lose election badly with him at the helm. It will become more difficult now for PP to win a majority.

      Trudeau is the face of Liberal policies, and a lot of lefty voters think with him gone, his policies will be gone. They won’t be.

        Name one thing – ONE THING – that will change if Justin Trudeau resigns today and hands over his prime ministership to another member of the Liberal Party.

        Name one substantive change in position or policy. One.

        1. The LPC has, during the last 70 years or so, been a centrist party, in other words a nullity of compromise. PET jumped ship from the NDP to take them over and add more NDP policy to give it some purpose and ever since, with a few corrective interludes, it has been the implementation party for NDP policies, slightly tempered occasionally. His Spawn has accelerated and formalized the relationship. The Conservatives now dominate the centrist (nullity) and attempt to hold their base with some conservative leanings.

    He will clingon as long as he can through any means even if he decides to force an election or prorogation.
    FYI proroguing is highly contentious because it frames the liberals as conflating their problems with a Canadian problem.

    There is the delicious spectacle of the leadership race in which the contenders will have to either describe how they will be different from the way they have acted the last nine years or exclaim what a great job they did and pledge to carry on doing such a bang up job.
    Oh, and just reported by mothercorp that he will make his resignation at 10:45 and that he intends to stay as leader “until a new leader is chosen”.
    So what happens if there is an election before they can chose a new leader?
    It means the replacement could be running for leadership of a caucus that can fit in a minivan.
    Maybe someone can get Jean Charest to run for liberal leader, I hear he has experience with that sort of thing.

    1. Trudeau 1 stated his intention to resign after losing in 1979 but a non-confidence vote occurred before the Liberal leadership convention and Trudeau ran and won the 1980 election imposing 4 more years of his rule over us.

  14. If he prorogues, then all the bills currently waiting for passing and/or royal assent are dead. Of course, a new government can revive them, but that seems unlikely.

    I’m thinking of the capital gains one, in particular:

        I have even less faith in Poilievre than you do. Too many times now I have heard the same excuses that, “Oh, don’t worry, he just can’t say what he will really do because the liberal news media will pounce on him” or “he’s only concerned that the Liberals will steal his policies if he announces them beforehand”. His stances on ‘supply management’ and residential schools long ago destroyed whatever faith I may have had in him. Making a couple of clear, unequivocal statements about his position on issues like firearms regulations or ‘gender-affirming care’ or pronouns might go a long way to changing my mind, but I don’t see that happening.

    1. Today Trudeau announced his intention to resign. He didn’t actually resign.

      I believe his resignation takes effect when a new Leader is selected.

      There’s still lots of files and documents to shred, so a new government can’t trace the stolen funds.

      1. A key point, Joe. He is around at least until March 24th. If the Libreal leadership race is during that time, then he would retire then. If they only hold the leadership race in June or later, then he will remain PM for his full term.

        The the election will be held after the leadership race, so that all the media attention will give them a little electoral boost. So, we could have an election in April, or October. I fancy the latter. It will take until the end of March for potential candidates to get organised and enter the race. The leadership race culminating in a Party convention, typically late August/autumn, suggests an October election. He gets to remain PM for almost another year.

            The Liberals will have whatever “rules” they think will maximize the chances of their preferred outcome.

            Remember the campaign that Trudeau won in 2013?

        2. When Patrick Brown was given the heave ho by the Ontario Conservatives they held a leadership election in virtually weeks, and went directly into an election. So that feasible. Doubt the Liberals will do that and seems Parliament doesn’t have the leverage to force an election any time soon.

    Will they? It seems a logical play, gain seats running on items Liberals just killed with prorogue.

    2. Your thinking on this is fine as far as it goes. Yes, Justatwit is still the head of the federal government as Prime Minister. The selection process for a new leader began today. This means the Libs have however long the leadership selection process takes with Justatwit as PM.

      To some degree, this all depends upon BagOShit as to whether or not it’s to his advantage to support the government or force an election. There are two aspects to this decision: 1. the NDP is broke; 2. progressive voters have been fleeing to the Dips over the past year. So it’s a question as to how many of them the Dips will keep upon selection of a replacement for Justatwit.

      1. According to 338, the Dippers haven’t really benefitted from the Lieberals plunging of the depths. They continue to float in the 19% range, give or take, as the mushy middle have moved pretty much to the Cons.
        The real danger to the Dips, is bleeding to the LIErs, if/when they select a new rep, as there’s bound to be a bounce. Either way doesn’t look good for them (HaHa).
        Dogmeet’s best bet is probably to go non-confidence in March and kick the Lieberals when they are down, the Dips might get some support for growing a spine and doing something right for the country…..for once.

    1. Funding for government operations expires on April 1.
      The House has to be brought back before then to pass legislation allowing the funding to continue (“the tabling of estimates” in geek-speak).

      If the Liberals manage to survive the Throne Speech and pass the Estimates they could then do ANOTHER prorogation. It depends if the Liberals can continue to buy Singh’s support.

    2. Why would Carney want to lose an election as leader? I just don’t see him waiting 4 long years for another shot at becoming PM, it would seem a better strategy to wait until after the next failed leader resigns, then swoop in while having gathered your own forces comfortably for the big job.
      Carney’s living the good life right now, it just doesn’t make sense, much like when PP paused and didn’t run for leader when O’Fool ran.
      I guess it depends what Klaus and the WEF cabal tell the Lieberals to do.
