Uh oh. The Trudeau announcement has a media Q&A.
That leans toward staying.
— Stephen Taylor (@stephen_taylor) January 6, 2025
Update: No matter how much you hate him, it’s not enough.
Vassy says Trudeau stepping down as Liberal Leader at 10:45. Will remain as PM.
GG has been asked to prorogue House until late March. (Gives House enough time to pass Supply Bill & ensure that govt doesn’t run out of money before April 1).
Rebel News live feed.

Does anyone really believe the effing narcisist will voluntarily step down?
The Turd is much too arrogant (and delusional in his abilities) to voluntarily step down.
Nope. He will drag this out as long as he can.
At 16% in the polls, I wouldn’t exactly call that a voluntary step down.
And with the House prorogued, he has ensured that there will be no non-confidence defeat of the government. Singh & the NDP will not support a non-con vote now that Justin is going. The Libs will stay in power until October, giving them enough time to select the next leader.
I predict that Justin’s resignation will give the Libs a considerable jump in the polls. Liberal policies won’t change with him gone, they all supported his policies, they just wanted him gone because the Libs would lose election badly with him at the helm. It will become more difficult now for PP to win a majority.
Trudeau is the face of Liberal policies, and a lot of lefty voters think with him gone, his policies will be gone. They won’t be.
We’ll see. Previous polling showed that dumping Justin would have little positive effect on Liberal polling.
Would love to see him endure the experience of being totally wiped out in the election.
What game does he have up his sleeve?
Trudeau is announcing he is transitioning. It all makes sense now.
gender transitioning perhaps?
The real question is what he is transitioning FROM, and what he is transitioning TO.
And neither one is male.
Seems most likely he’ll announce he’s stepping down but not until a new leadership contest is run later this year. This way Dogmeat can keep voting with him well into the summer.
The longer he stays, the more damage is done to the much-vaunted (snicker) “Liberal Brand.”
As long as (i) the damage to the Liberal brand in the interim is greater than (ii) the damage done to Canada in the interim (and really, how much more damage can these clowns practically inflict on us their few remaining months?), then persons who want a conservative (note small”c”) revolution in this country, should want Justin (PBUH) to stay on as PM
His Liberal Party replacement might be way worse
So stay….just a little bit longer
@Eric: 2 things…
– I hope by PBUH you meant Pain Be Upon Him
– I couldn’t care less what’s happening in Librano$ Party. The problem is that he stays as PM, meaning the same team of incompetent scumbags will continue to inflict damage to Canada. We may not have a country anymore by Sep/Oct if he continues as PM.
ELECTION NOW !!!
The same team of incompetent scumbags who will continue to inflict damage to Canada will ALWAYS be running the Liberal Party of Canada, regardless of who the Head Cheese is.
Justin – who has publicly admitted that he has no real interest in policy – is the mere spokesman, er, spokesperson for the Liberal Party and its (again, snicker) “brain trust.” It is the Liberal Party who has to go not Justin.
Name one thing – ONE THING – that will change if Justin Trudeau resigns today and hands over his prime ministership to another member of the Liberal Party.
Name one substantive change in position or policy. One.
I rest my case.
The LPC has, during the last 70 years or so, been a centrist party, in other words a nullity of compromise. PET jumped ship from the NDP to take them over and add more NDP policy to give it some purpose and ever since, with a few corrective interludes, it has been the implementation party for NDP policies, slightly tempered occasionally. His Spawn has accelerated and formalized the relationship. The Conservatives now dominate the centrist (nullity) and attempt to hold their base with some conservative leanings.
Correct. So name one thing – ONE THING – that will change if Justin Trudeau resigns today and hands over his prime ministership to another member of the Liberal Party.
To quote the Talking Heads, “I’m still waiting.”
Not the last twenty it hasn’t. It silently crept into the school system, the family, and the tradition values that matter, even if you where gay or not.
They opened Pandora’s box. With the help of people full of themselves, and no sense of history .
LPC hasn’t been centrist since Pearson. It went left and bringing PET on board confirmed it.
The Lieberals have been described as subdued socialists and the Dipshits as socialists in a hurry
Lots of people will think Canada’s troubles are over……..
Just think easy and that’s where most Canadians lean.
Spokesperson/puppet.
Totally agree .
Well, Freeland made clear she doesn’t want a GST holiday or that ridiculous free 200 bucks being thrown around. I mean, if you cared you’d know about this stuff. But you don’t care about knowing stuff.
I thought the “Liberal Brand” was Soviet prison camp slang for “red hot poker up the rectum”?
Having to fly commercial will be the biggest cross to bear.
*
Last I saw he’s got 800 million dollars in Trudeau Foundation bribes.
He’ll buy his own private jet.
*
And still condemn us serfs for travelling.
He’s never had to fly commercial in his life, his kids and Sophie don’t either.
Imagine being the child of that sh*tstain? How embarrassing. I bet they change their last names.
To Castro?
Nah, Xavier will use it to get elected when the next overrated Conservaderp dunce engineers another Liberal upset victory.
Oddly, early this morning on Fox News they stated Trudeau would be stepping down today, or announcing such.
World leaders everywhere have assigned some lackey to tune in on their lunch break to see what happened and report the results.
I’m thinking there’s more interest in the betting parlors than there is in the offices of other heads of State.
This is very important for Canadians. For the rest of the world, not so much until someone gets in office to steer the SS Canada on a new course.
Keep asking this question: Can you name even one Liberal MP who isn’t a corrupt asshole?
Trudeau isn’t the only problem.
When they do install a new captain of the Titanic expect a war for the survival of the media corporate welfare from Trudeau’s paid little doggies in the MSM.
Their careers depend on convincing voters that everything is wonderful with the new captain.
They have nothing to lose by doubling down on their lies.
And, do the Chinese installed Liberal MPs get to vote on the new Liberal leader?
How can they have a leadership race without disclosing all of the traitor’s names?
DO NOT FEAR CANADIANS. TRUMP WILL LIBERATE YOU LONG SUFFERING PEOPLE ON DAY ONE OF HIS ADMINISTRATION – CREATING THE NEW NORTH AMERICAN COUNTRY “TRUMPISTAN”!
*
I thought it was gonna be called ‘Gay North Dakota.’
*
If he doesn’t resign, then my intuition was CORRECT!!! He is too damn arrogant to ever resign!
Note the date. I expect he will connect Poilievre to Trump and the January 6 “insurrectionists”!
Regardless of the announcement content it is the unofficial start of the leadership race.
He will clingon as long as he can through any means even if he decides to force an election or prorogation.
FYI proroguing is highly contentious because it frames the liberals as conflating their problems with a Canadian problem.
“What? We’re supposed to put government business on hold until the liberals anoint the successor to Trudeau?”
There is the delicious spectacle of the leadership race in which the contenders will have to either describe how they will be different from the way they have acted the last nine years or exclaim what a great job they did and pledge to carry on doing such a bang up job.
Oh, and just reported by mothercorp that he will make his resignation at 10:45 and that he intends to stay as leader “until a new leader is chosen”.
So what happens if there is an election before they can chose a new leader?
It means the replacement could be running for leadership of a caucus that can fit in a minivan.
Maybe someone can get Jean Charest to run for liberal leader, I hear he has experience with that sort of thing.
Trudeau 1 stated his intention to resign after losing in 1979 but a non-confidence vote occurred before the Liberal leadership convention and Trudeau ran and won the 1980 election imposing 4 more years of his rule over us.
If he prorogues, then all the bills currently waiting for passing and/or royal assent are dead. Of course, a new government can revive them, but that seems unlikely.
I’m thinking of the capital gains one, in particular:
“If the government falls, the capital gains proposals will die. In tax law, it is very common for many technical tax changes to die when an election is called. But it is also very common for such tax technical changes to be reintroduced by the new government, even if the new government is being led by a different political party.”
https://financialpost.com/personal-finance/taxes/capital-gains-life-support-canadians-abide
Cautious optimism here. Although I have moderate hopes for Pierre Poilievre (he seems to be saying some – some – of the right things), I still need to be convinced that the Conservatives qualify as a “different political party.”
“Cautious optimism here. Although I have moderate hopes for Pierre Poilievre (he seems to be saying some – some – of the right things), I still need to be convinced that the Conservatives qualify as a “different political party.””
I have even less faith in Poilievre than you do. Too many times now I have heard the same excuses that, “Oh, don’t worry, he just can’t say what he will really do because the liberal news media will pounce on him” or “he’s only concerned that the Liberals will steal his policies if he announces them beforehand”. His stances on ‘supply management’ and residential schools long ago destroyed whatever faith I may have had in him. Making a couple of clear, unequivocal statements about his position on issues like firearms regulations or ‘gender-affirming care’ or pronouns might go a long way to changing my mind, but I don’t see that happening.
And on its return the liberal party is faced with the prospect of the government falling on a speech from the throne before a new leader is chosen and having to campaign under the current leader.
So now he’s screwing over the liberal party too.
Sweet irony
In any decent Banana Republic, the military would have taken over by now.
True but we are no longer, or even remotely close, to being anything decent. As to our military, it’s not even decent these days.
Kak
WHAT military??????
It’s basically a nothing-burger, and it’s obvious even before the big drama at 10:45am: he will step down as party leader only + prorogue. Aka he will keep the dagger deeply and twist it slowly so he can extinguish all remaining life left from Canada’s body.
And ‘leadership race’ within Librano$ is like having election battle of who’s captain of Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
This is the worst outcome actually, it’s typical scumbaggery from a top vermin like trudeau.
He is stepping down as leader of Liberal Party, but staying as leader of Canada? I guess he must be running out of “leadership”.
Can anyone explain this strategy, or do I have to wait for the cbc to explain the genius behind it all?
Right after they’re done explaining what a “special rapporteur” is and does.
I though the same as you regarding this unique political triangulation he is apparently attempting to do
A “special rapporteur” carries the bags of extremely important rappers.
I suppose the SNC-Lavalin corporate jet will be available for him when he steps down, so he won’t have to – God forbid – fly commercial.
He’s still squatting at the cottage I see.
I hope he wears special socks.
Late for his own presser!
Maybe he was talking Maggie off the ledge seeing her gravy train will end soon too.
Eskimo
Probably trying to get her to put her pants back on, and leave studio 54.
By being late, he’s showing he doesn’t give a toss about us.
So he’s going, just not yet.
He’s only resigning after the Libs choose a new leader. We’re essentially stuck with the SOB for a while yet, since Parliament has been prorogued until March 24th
Good god, is he not the worst person to listen to? After listening to that “resignation” speech I will be so happy to never have to hear that slime ball and his creepy fake sincerity any longer. You almost feel like you need to rinse your ears out after listening to him/her.
Big time. I’m not even slightly kidding when I say I found it literally impossible to watch and listen to that without physically wincing and turning my head from side to side, like if I’m strapped to a chair trying to avoid salt being tossed into my eyes.
Just an absolutely insufferable human being. There have been a lot of politicians I dislike, but he’s at a completely different level.
Justin walked out of the cottage, saw his own asshole, and we have three more months of Liberal leadership nonsense.
Lmao. Or LMAHO.
Stan for PM!
Gold !!! hahaha
He’s a fighter who doesn’t back away from a fight and is always fighting for Canadians and democracy and Ukraine and climate change, but “internal divisions” made him stop fighting to fight the fight.
Our little girly boy dictator stated in his speech, that his only regret is that he couldn’t change the electoral system so the Liberal Party could stay in power forever.
It is very difficult to listen to him, more so when his voice is soft and every word he says becomes more like, he’s whispering as Biden does when trying to “craft a statement” … evasive
Still speaking about PM Harper, now rent free for a decade.
Is he allowed to appoint himself interim PM? Doesn’t the party have control of that decision?
Today Trudeau announced his intention to resign. He didn’t actually resign.
I believe his resignation takes effect when a new Leader is selected.
There’s still lots of files and documents to shred, so a new government can’t trace the stolen funds.
A key point, Joe. He is around at least until March 24th. If the Libreal leadership race is during that time, then he would retire then. If they only hold the leadership race in June or later, then he will remain PM for his full term.
The the election will be held after the leadership race, so that all the media attention will give them a little electoral boost. So, we could have an election in April, or October. I fancy the latter. It will take until the end of March for potential candidates to get organised and enter the race. The leadership race culminating in a Party convention, typically late August/autumn, suggests an October election. He gets to remain PM for almost another year.
I may be wrong, please.
Don’t Liberal Party rules require a four month leadership campaign?
Every party has rules for leadership changes.
And those rules change for every leadership campaign.
The Liberals will have whatever “rules” they think will maximize the chances of their preferred outcome.
Remember the campaign that Trudeau won in 2013?
The Liberals allowed anyone over 14 years of age to vote (no membership to purchase, didn’t even have to be a Canadian citizen)
When Patrick Brown was given the heave ho by the Ontario Conservatives they held a leadership election in virtually weeks, and went directly into an election. So that feasible. Doubt the Liberals will do that and seems Parliament doesn’t have the leverage to force an election any time soon.
Well, it looks lIke our Decade of Darkness will soon be over. It’s getting a bit brighter over Mordor.
It’s difficult to write about Trudeau, the worst Prime Minister and government in Canadian history, who has created an economic and social Lost Decade in Canada. It would just be a long, expletive ridden rant about Trudeau, the Liberals, the NDP, and the idiotic voters in central and eastern Canada who kept him in power. So, I had Grok write a limerick instead.
There once was a PM named Trudeau,
Whose policies left us quite low.
He’d greenwash with flair,
While we’re lost in despair,
His legacy? A debt-ridden show!
It really is hard not to lapse into swears. A few weeks ago I was typing out a comment about Cynthia Freeland when I realized the entire thing was just a string of expletives — no conjunctions, no indefinite articles, nothing, just swear words.
So I put it through an AI “Invective to Politeness” translator, which spit out the following:
“She’s a plucky little battler.”
Yep, I can’t think of anything decent to say about the Trudeau Liberal-NDP regime. They absolutely betrayed the interests of Canada and Canadians over and over.
The only possible silver lining is that it gives the Conservatives a golden opportunity to drastically shrink the size of government. Getting the immense and disastrous debt, deficit and interest payments under control justifies a massive cost cutting and regulation reform program…with any saving directed to tax cutting, essential spending and debt repayment. No more incremental changes but, instead, a quick Argentina-like renewal.
1) His dad was worse, and so was Pearson
2) At least we got MAID, mass immigration (but not enough), and MJ (but screwed up with taxes)
Listening to the molesting substitute drama teacher announcement now.
He’s stuck in his benevolent-frog-David-Attenborough-scolding-children-character.
Delusional narcissist.
In any event, the country gets royally screwed. Expect the Dippers to get a sweet deal to thwart a non-confidence motion on March 24. In the meantime the Rooster Lollipop and Cabinet will unleash all sorts of Standing Orders to push the WEF globalist agenda.
There will be a confidence vote in March.
I think Kinsella’s an a$$hole, but I believe Kinsella is correct that Trudeau has secured the support of the NDP, so the Liberals won’t have to fight an election in the middle of a Leadership campaign.
https://x.com/kinsellawarren/status/1876303299864895663?
Thus there won’t be an election until October.
But it would be hilarious if Jagmeet decides to pull a double cross in hopes of siphoning off Liberal voters to the NDP.
Didn’t need Kinsella to figure that out. It was obvious when meat head stated the lack of confidence. October would be the earliest election. There are pensions to protect.
Canadians get hoodwinked once again. How long are we supposed to wait before new minted Carty is PM?
Liberals, afraid of who’s party Canadians would elect as PM, have decided they’ll, once again, decide for us.
Government by all the people, by some of the people, for them only in “our democracy.”
The obvious strategy is to defeat the government immediately upon the return of Parliament on 24 Mar.25.
Don’t give them any chance to regroup and continue to hide from voters hoping for sunnier days.
But the Beavis and Butthead of Canadian politics, themselves also irrationally afraid of voters, must help.
Will they? It seems a logical play, gain seats running on items Liberals just killed with prorogue.
It’s not only logical but it oozes of common sense – that’s how you know they won’t do it.
Time to Grit gong in the new year.
So, let me get this straight; Trudeau has prorogue parliament until the end of March. He is stepping down as leader BUT ONLY when Liberal party picks a new leader. So, he’s still the leader! How long can the Liberals drag out a leadership contest….months?
So, isn’t this the same type of thing as when Singh said months ago that he will tear up the “supply and confidence” agreement to support the Liberal government….but then continued to support the Liberal government?
So, is Trudeau still the leader of Canada?
No….but yes.
Someone please correct my thinking on this.
Cast all logic aside and surrender to the Liberal bafflegab!
This is a country that still thinks the term “Progressive-Conservative” is not a unusual or bizarre term
They key questions I’m asking is “will these bizarre maneuvers that Justin is doing (i) enhance and (ii) damage the Liberal brand?” Hoping for the latter
Your thinking on this is fine as far as it goes. Yes, Justatwit is still the head of the federal government as Prime Minister. The selection process for a new leader began today. This means the Libs have however long the leadership selection process takes with Justatwit as PM.
To some degree, this all depends upon BagOShit as to whether or not it’s to his advantage to support the government or force an election. There are two aspects to this decision: 1. the NDP is broke; 2. progressive voters have been fleeing to the Dips over the past year. So it’s a question as to how many of them the Dips will keep upon selection of a replacement for Justatwit.
According to 338, the Dippers haven’t really benefitted from the Lieberals plunging of the depths. They continue to float in the 19% range, give or take, as the mushy middle have moved pretty much to the Cons.
The real danger to the Dips, is bleeding to the LIErs, if/when they select a new rep, as there’s bound to be a bounce. Either way doesn’t look good for them (HaHa).
Dogmeet’s best bet is probably to go non-confidence in March and kick the Lieberals when they are down, the Dips might get some support for growing a spine and doing something right for the country…..for once.
Well, if good-ole-Librano$ are not done with their leadership thingy, the little rodent/rooster can require an extension of prorogation on March 24.
Funding for government operations expires on April 1.
The House has to be brought back before then to pass legislation allowing the funding to continue (“the tabling of estimates” in geek-speak).
If the Liberals manage to survive the Throne Speech and pass the Estimates they could then do ANOTHER prorogation. It depends if the Liberals can continue to buy Singh’s support.
What a sick joke this country is.
Jagmeet for leader of the the Libs! Run with it!
Well, my predictions which I posted yesterday proved to be completely wrong. But thanks to all of you who listened to his “resignation” speech so that I didn’t have to.
Prorogue their pay.
Yes!
Time to join the LPC and get Hans Gruber in as leader!
Well, to paraphrase the late Richard Nixon, “we Canadians will have Justhin Trudeau to kick around for months”. I like the phrase “The long good riddance”.
The long good riddance 👏
Is the Liberal Party electoral system first past the post?
Why do Liberal voters hate Canada so much?
This gives his media lots of time to pimp for Carney who is as good as elected now. Who is his competition that wasn’t tainted with the odor of the Spawn? Christy Clarke? She destroyed what credibility she had by pimping for Kamala. Watch the mindless mushy middle move back towards Carney’s Liberals.
Plenty will enter the race; it is a good way to boost your advancement, deals with the new leader to drop out of the race, etc.
Why would Carney want to lose an election as leader? I just don’t see him waiting 4 long years for another shot at becoming PM, it would seem a better strategy to wait until after the next failed leader resigns, then swoop in while having gathered your own forces comfortably for the big job.
Carney’s living the good life right now, it just doesn’t make sense, much like when PP paused and didn’t run for leader when O’Fool ran.
I guess it depends what Klaus and the WEF cabal tell the Lieberals to do.
So who is the new one gonna be? Freehead, or Meethead?
In other news, the media gathers round a disrobing Mark Carney, anxiously awaiting his tongue bath.
When Trudeau 0.2 leaves will Quebec follow? Imagine losing the burden of 1/3 of the national debt, 1/2 of the deficit, and 1/2 of federal government employees.
After years of water carrying, Coyne is doing his best Capt. Louis Renault impression.
Coyne didn’t carry any water. He was just objective or tried to be.
