  1. Manual transmissions get better gas mileage (about 10%) so the reason to limit them is not climate change.

    1. I thought automatics – at least with cars – had become more fuel efficient in the last 7-10 years.
(My 2019 Jetta is an 8 speed.) I’m too lazy to search…

      1. My information might be 10 years out of date.

        https://www.autoblog.com/news/2019-vw-jetta-fuel-economy-improves

“Final details on the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta continue to trickle out, the latest of which concerns the car’s fuel economy. EPA numbers have finally been released, and the new Jetta is certainly more efficient than the last one. Interestingly, it also no longer matters what transmission you get, because they all get the same numbers of 30 mpg in the city, 40 on the highway, and 34 in combined driving.”

But for trucks it seems the manuals still rule if you know how to drive.

Interesting comment on the automatic transmissions – more expensive, less control and less durable.

        1. My 2013 Jetta TDI gets 659 miles to the tank and in KM its 1060.

Auto trans both knees operated on.

Thats driving way past speed limits btw.

Fast starts 0 to 60 miles in under 10 seconds.

    2. The Check is in the Mail…or in the numbered account in the Caymans.
Governments, despite what they claim, do not consult, nor are motivated by science or objectivity.

  2. “as soon as you allow politicians determine that which can be bought and sold, the first thing bought and sold will always be politicians.” – El Gato Malo

Presumably Allison is the buyer in this case.

  3. There is truth that the automated transmissions are more efficient. Eaton Fuller is the standard transmission used across all makes, and it is a very old design. The automated transmissions are a newer design and keep getting updated. The differences:

    Double countershaft vs single countershaft
50 weight oil vs 20 weight oil
Straight cut gears vs helical cut gears
The automated tranmission case has supports to the mainshaft and countershaft all along the shaft. Eaton fuller is wide open (that’s why it needs a dual countershaft).

The clutch is a similar design. Some automated transmissions also have something on the countershaft to slow it down quickly between shifts to make shifting lightning quick.

Fuel mileage differences between 2% and 5% are normal.

Jurisdictions now allow “automated only” CDLs where the driver takes the test in an automated commercial vehicle. This is exactly what you think it is, a lowering of the standards.

That being said the government shouldn’t mandate this, there are many applications where a stick is preferred or needed.

      1. I believe that is correct re grades. Also what Allan said about limited licenses I believe Sask has that for the 1a, you are restricted to auto if you take your test in one. I was wondering if this had anything to do with number of turban torpedoes the road and that most of our “new” drivers may have an issue with manual transmissions.

  4. Maybe they’re hoping to have fewer trucks on the road. Not sure if whomever came up with the regulations would make the connection between trucks on the road and food on the shelves.

  5. Very few criminals can drive stick. Trudy et al just making it easier for Lib friends to steal semis and ship them over to Africa.

  6. Communists and their little “mandates”.
Well first where did they find the “man” in that bunch of Beta males?
    To make said mandate?

Funny how those who seek to dominate all and demand that they shall rule..telling us what fuels we must use, what gearbox is best for us and how we shall use our hands..have zero skills.
They seek to dictate actions that they cannot perform.
Making laws about things they will never understand.

I wonder how many runaway rigs we will see in our mountains, before drivers refuse.
But mention “engine braking” to these Lords of the Urbs and they will have no clue.

I can just imagine the perfect scenario,a newby driver, heavy load, automatic transmission and a long downhill grade.

While there is no legal cure for stupid,it pains me to associate with such fools.
    So I don’t.
Which brings much peace of mind.
If you can arrange your affairs ,you can avoid working for dangerous, power mad idiots.
    Stay away from government contracts.
Work for and with the people you know and trust.
And politely avoid providing any help to our Parasitic Overload.

Eventually the seasons change,in the cycles of human affairs.
Already the cost of “Mandates by idiots” have exceeded our budgets.
Bringing lost opportunity and outright avoidance.
We are starting to starve amidst plenty..Yet the Fools and bandits who staff our Kleptocracy live fat and lazy.

    Interesting times await us.
And we still have those gloriously inane “Canadian Heritage Moments” to fall back on.
    “Le Guillotine,its our heritage”.

    1. A three-on-the-tree is basically an immobilizer to anyone under 40! If a yute stole it, chances are, he was probably a farm kid!!

As for the automatics, an old trucker freind said it’s absolutely to get more unskilled asses in the seats.. He Hated automatics, I went with him on a trip once and the truck had an automatic and it went out on us, struggled to get it to the depot, picked up a manual on the trip back and no issues. Most of the time, he said, unless the clutch goes, a manual won’t leave you stranded!

      1. As for the automatics, an old trucker freind said it’s absolutely to get more unskilled asses in the seats.

This. In spades. See it every day.

That said, automatics are more convenient to drive in smaller centers where there are stop signs every other block. However, Prinz Blackface of Elbowgate appears to be addressing largely highway tractors.

Now, if they could just automate reversing a b-train so these Middle Easterners wouldn’t need 8 tries to back up the length of their rig, and crookedly at that. You can’t back up, you shouldn’t be given a license to go forward either.

All these gov’t regs post-Humbolt have done nothing but increase the cost to get a class 1 or 3 & extend the time it takes to get it. In Alberta, 10 grand & six months is typical. There are just as many shitty commercial drivers out there as before, if not more.

        1. In Calgary, I regularly have tandem-axel dump trucks blowing by me in the passing lane on Stony Trail (well named for all the windshield hits; wished they had named it Marshmallow Trail). Singh Bros trucking has been one of the culprits. Never in my 60+ years have I seen a dump truck trying to make “good time” by screaming down the highway, doing 140 in a 100 zone, until recently.

AND they tailgate who doesn’t get out of their way … in the passing lane.

          1. Singh Bros trucking

I’d be down at SBT head office every day for a month, w/ video. If that didn’t work, I’d be down at the Sheriff’s office doing the same thing. Still no results? I’d follow them to their destination & it would get personal, real fast like.

And no, I’m not a tough guy. I just have a very low tolerance for bullshit.

        2. There are truck training centres in Brampton and Mississauga that charge less than $5k for AZ license training. And the results are easy to spot when you see one of their graduates attempting to back a trailer into a loading dock. I once sat in a parking lot for almost 15 minutes for one of these clowns to line up his trailer with the loading dock.

          1. For $5K you get the trucker you pay for. And it shows. Only the fearless proceed on a fresh bramptonstan green light as the guaranteed rush of dump trucks and semis running their red would have you meet your Maker early.

I wouldn’t trust these worthless shites to safely drive a car, and the libscum can’t bring in enough boatloads of them to drive the final stake into the heart of the Canuck trucking industry.

Never seems to be a castreau MP’s car that gets smashed by one of these rolling incompetents, but Hope springs eternal.

  7. Why is the government regulating this?

    Because they can.

It also gives all civil servants pencil pushers and keyboard monkeys something to do.

  8. Mack was already getting 94% of their Anthem model spec’d with the mDrive AMT in 2020, but the government shouldn’t be mandating this.

  9. can we PULLLLEEEEEZE have a bit of ‘truth in advertising’ and *sumbuddy* get the LIEberals to change the party name to the Mandate Party?

    1. Hmm what does wiki have to say on liberalism
“Liberalism is a political ideology that emphasizes individual freedom, democracy, and the protection of human rights. It is characterized by a commitment to limited government intervention in economic and social affairs, allowing individuals to pursue their own goals and interests.”

Mandate Party does have a ring to it. Is it possible to charge the liberal party with misinformation or at least false advertising?
I would go with them calling themselves the Fascist Party but apparently that was already taken.

  10. Kinda hard to work the clutch in flip flops. No point handing out CDLs at the airport if they can’t shift the gears.

  11. I am a retired dealership service advisor. Ford and Nissan. Modern automatic transmissions cost a fortune to replace when they fail and many people don’t realize it until they do fail. Notice I said “Replace”. The days of overhauling transmissions and engines from light duty cars and trucks are long gone. A properly driven manual transmission vehicle will usually last much longer and will be cheaper to repair if needed. Having said that many late model manual transmission vehicles have a ‘dual mass flywheel’ which can substantially increase the price of a clutch replacement. I currently own a 2007 Ford Ranger and a 2014 Nissan Sentra. Both are standard transmission. I refused to buy a Nissan with a CVT automatic transmission as they are prone to failure and often cost 5-6000 to replace. My Ranger has the original clutch at about 220000 kms and so does my Sentra at about the same mileage. The Sentra is a 6 speed manual and averages about 6 liters/100 kms. I have got as much as 4.8 when driven for mileage. That’s 57 mpg folks. Imperial.

  12. Is Poilievre gonna stop it, squash it, eliminate it, make it so that it can’t be redone?
Or just go with the flow?

  13. Speaking of backing up.

A taxi was parked in front of the doors to the gas station, he had the usual smokes and lottery clientele. I pulled in nose to nose and started pumping gas. After his riders got back in, he wanted ME to move out of the way…I was still pumping gas. HE COULDN”T BACK UP A SIMPLE TAXI IN A STRAIGHT LINE.

  14. Some pedantic technical notes:

I am pretty sure no one has put spur gears in a transmission since 1950. We had one of those in an old grain truck and it was a right brute to shift clean in a hurry or on a hill. Helical gears are more efficient, quieter, tougher, smaller, etc., which is why they are used. Some race vehicles might use spur gears as the transmission will be simpler and lighter. The driver is very skilled and the short service life doesn’t matter. But I would quite startled if there was a production heavy truck transmission with spur gears anywhere except the reversing gear. I suppose I should go looking but it seems so silly to even suggest it.

Depending one what is going on, you can also set up helical gears so the thrust loads cancel each other and the bearings don’t need to carry it either, but these are unlikely in a smaller gearbox. Modern bearings are tough and can carry immense loads compared to just a few years ago.

Automatic transmissions have a fluid coupler and this used to be a source of inefficiency as there is always some slip. However, for the last thirty years or so, this type of transmission has had a clutch that locks the engine to the shaft at higher speeds, which is where the main energy dissipation is, and this makes them essentially the same. The losses at lower speeds in an automatic are offset by the lack of skill some manual transmission drivers exhibit.

I have led teams of engineers designing items exactly like this for the last three decades. Smaller production runs and mostly custom applications. My only actual interesting point is that the technology is always getting better. Most people cannot see it as it is buried inside some mysterious ticking box, but bearings, gears, seals, lubrication, and rigidity are all getting better constantly and not by small amounts either. We are chasings fractions of a point in efficiency, but we can make the device twice as light, three times strong, and with a service life four times longer, compared to the same transmission thirty years ago. Remember, that is only in 1994!

  15. Recently bought a 24 Bowtie. 3.0 ltr turbo diesel mated to an Allison 10 speed. 1/2 ton gets 35 mpg on highway at 115km’s. While I love a good 5 speed manual, as we had in our recently restored Z28, this new truck is smooth.
    Just my 2 cents.

  16. Clowns like seat-belt, helmet and cigarette laws, so why not tranny laws?
If it saves just one life, its worth it to bubble-wrap the entire population!

  17. No EVs have manual transmissions.
Regulating the percentage of sales of vehicles that use manual transmissions is designed to throw sand in the gears of commerce regarding the sales of ICE vehicles.

It will cause delays in the delivery of ICE vehicles to consumers due to percentages of EVs being mandated having to be delivered first before dealers can deliver ICE vehicles, especially ICE vehicles that have manual transmissions.
