Trump’s Tariff vs. Trudeau’s Ego

Yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump posted this:

As everyone is aware, thousands of people are pouring through Mexico and Canada, bringing Crime and Drugs at levels never seen before … On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders. This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country! Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem.

Prediction of Trudeau’s ego: “Not on my watch!” In fact, he’ll likely intentionally do nothing, stating that he won’t be bullied by any American.

For those with their heads stuck firmly in the sand, his failure to change the course of Canadian policies is why we have this.

    1. I hope they target swing states disproportionately and Canada does as well. Under WTO rules Canada can retaliate dollar per dollar, but it doesn’t have to be across the board.

        1. Of course he/they is. They/ he and his ilk hate white Christian people and this country and are actively trying to destroy this great Dominion.

        2. apparently so, l sense the thinking is some sort of ‘tit-for-tat’ suffices instead of STOPPING IT LIKE SLAMMING INTO A BRIDGE ABUTMENT.
          amlrite allans(hithead)?

      1. Our economy is a fraction of the US economy. What part of them crushing us do you not understand?

There is a very real danger hear, not some faculty lounge fantasy BS.

      2. [cough!] Really, AllanS? Do you really believe that America is going to be concerned with Canada putting tariffs on American imports?

Have you taken a good look at the GDP of both countries? Interest rates? Currency exchanges?

    2. The US farm lobby wants to be exempted from the deportations. They lose the Mexican farm labour and they wont get crop to market.

Trump isn’t even sworn in and he’s got everybody pissing themselves. Reality is the US is very dependent on both Mexico and Canada, as we are on them. There are many things that need correcting and Trump is on a very short leash. Less than 24 months to mid terms and by then public sentiment could be quite different. He needs to pick his targets carefully.

      1. I’d say Trump has a very solid mandate. If he is successful in implementing policies that he promised during the election cycle prior to getting elected, I don’t think he’ll have much to worry about in the midterms.

If, otoh, Trump goes wishy-washy on his promises, the electorate will pick up on that in 24 months, as you say, but my instincts tells me that is not Trump’s style.

  1. The dynamics of this are kind of…well…awesome. Your government popping up a few days ago saying they wished to do a unilateral trade agreement with the US and leave Mexico out of it was an effort to avoid what we’re seeing here today. And, it would work on someone who isn’t fully invested in results. In other words, they’re still treating and evaluating Trump as a typical politician…because that’s what they are, and how they think.

Trump is dead serious about getting a handle on immigration. Those aren’t just words spouted out for soundbites and platitudes (like Trudeau operates). So, they still don’t quite understand the ramifications of trying to play hardball. My guess is the Canadian government will now work in tandem with the media (Canada and US) to highlight the negatives of tariffs and how they are the Devil’s tool. But, it won’t work. That’s the nasty thing about a president who won’t be running for office again. He doesn’t give a shit.

Trudeau is about to become very unpopular in Canada, even with his sycophants.

      1. With more than a quarter of the labor f0rce working in the public sector, that’s a pretty influential voting bloc, especially if the opposition promises to cut government bureaucracy. What was that saying again? “Learn to code?” I have a feeling we’re going to say that a lot after the next federal election up here in the frozen white north.

  2. Justin is busy with important issues. His Toronto Star is excited that their hero will appear on a Quebec show that tests hot wings.

  3. So how many illegal immigrants and how much fentanyl is coming through Canada?

Or is this another “it feels right so it must be true” like the non-existant Canada-US trade imbalance or Chinese steel slipping through using a NAFTA COO?

    1. The fentanyl aspect is just a byproduct of unchecked immigration. The crossings on the Canadian border have increased significantly. 95% increase in illegal crossings over 2023. Most of those are Indians who used Canada as a stepping stone, which suggests the NGO’s working India are making the suggestion (perhaps even financing it).

Anyway, per the Dept. of Homeland Security…Under the Biden administration, drug smuggling has increased by 596% along the Northern border, including a 26% increase in fentanyl.

    2. As you drive through vacant and decaying industrial sections, witness the unemployment, the absolute lack of any Canadian products for sale in your stores, does reality ever shine it’s light upon you? When you go over the border and lose 40 cents of your dollar because of our imploding economy (was par under Harper), or notice the plagues of drug addicts that have swarmed our big cities, or the 600 billion in new debt in just 9 years, do you ever think you may be wrong? When you witness riots in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and they are not of Canadian born angst, do you not see a pattern?

To have an opinion that ignores every fact, reality, and observation is not worthy of a supposed sentient being

      1. Excellent comment Jane.
Liberals world views and ideas are driven by theories and totally ignore reality.

      2. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Although I was going to try, until I read your rebuttal.
        Nice job!

  4. Start them at 25%.
If no action in 90 days raise them to 50%
If no action in 90 days raise them to 100%

Actually, that is an oversimplification. There ought to be a sweet spot that both maximizes revenue to the US and causes Turdo maximum pain.

Mexico would be a different equation than Canada. For starters, tax all remittances to Mexico 25%. That should be permanent.

  5. This is a layup for Trudeau, but instead he’ll go for a Hail Mary.
He’ll be in this fight for us, right down to our last dollar, and 25% tariff.
He’ll attack Trump to try to ruffle some feathers, as he did with India, in order to fluff up his globalist bona fides.
There’s no way we can have an election now.
Pierre Poilievre is UNFIT TO LEAD!!!!!!

He’ll do something really bad for “what Canadians want” by telling Trump we both share the same problem of fentanyl from China so let’s all sing from the same song book, and while we’re at it, let’s get some pipelines going.

Oh, sorry, that would involve the use of common sense, to find common ground with an incoming US President.

  6. There have been 3 drug addicts (crack cocaine) in our family. One cleaned himself up and lived for another 10 years but died because drugs play “hell” with your heart and other organs. The nephew just died in his sleep one month ago – 39 years of age. I am waiting for the other to keel over in the next few years (lives in Vancouver and is a social worker!)

  7. It is time for our Dear Leader and his Children’s Crusade on Parliament Hill to call it a day.

The next four years are going to be the Age of The Donald for Canada. That will require some completely fresh thinking about both our economy (and our relationship with our principal economic partner) and our security and defence posture (and our relationship with our principal security and defence partner).

It means the Age of Post-National Dilettantism is at an end and the Liberal Party as currently configured and led is not up to the task; it needs to be cast into the wilderness to reflect and rebuild (not unlike the US Democratic Party).

Perhaps the Conservative Party slogan next year ought to be: “Because it’s 2025!”

  8. The Trudeau government will use the same playbook they use in Canada.

    – They’ll publicly make promises to the Trump administration that they have no intentions of keeping and say “Let me be clear, we take these issues very seriously”. The Liberal government will do absolutely nothing constructive or implement any changes on border security or drugs.

    – Perhaps they’ll create a new committee headed by a buddy or propose a meeting.

-They’ll definitely make it a political weapon to try to harm the Conservative Party.

    – They’ll probably create a diversion by sowing division between the Alberta/Saskatchewan energy industry and the rest of Canada.

Malignant narcissists like Trudeau can not change their behavior

    1. Just today in the HoC during QP, Trudeau was bragging about how he just talked to Trump, and that he will “keep fighting for Canadians”
Nothing but empty platitudes. He proposes nothing of significance. No plan, no “war room,” just more of his whiny virtue-signaling.
Latest polls show that more Canadians than ever are seeing through the turd’s crap fest.

  9. So we have 2 idiots whacking Canada . Trump should understand that the majority of Canadian Corporations are majority American owned. Trudeau will only respond because its going to hurt his election chances . He does not care for ordinary Canadians. His policies make that very clear.

  10. Reading some of the comments here is enough to make you weep. Nine years of Trudeau and ten years of media negativity about Trump has evidently had a less than positive effect on the average Canadian IQ. Even the leader of the opposition seems to have been affected. He is spouting off about what Trudeau should do! What Trudeau should do? Pardon me, but why does PP think that Trudeau will listen to him. How about as leader of the opposition you call a motion of no confidence in light of what has occurred over the last two weeks, never mind about the last nine years!!!

  11. Trump aims to target not only hardworking bikers and immigrant gangs but also their longstanding connections with the police and CBSA.

    When will the winning stop?

  12. Canada’s main exports to the USA are: (1) crude oil ($117B), (2) cars ($27B), (3) petroleum gas ($24B), (4) refined petroleum ($17B) and (5) gold ($14B).

Oil & gas producers, refiners and miners. Not on Justin’s friends list.

  13. Let the politicians huff ‘n’ puff…especially that Marxist skank from Mexico, I wouldn’t go there if I were you Senorita, you ain’t exactly an economic powerhouse. It’s the oldest play in the book. It’s called leverage and you use it to get what you want. I used it on my kids back in the day – clean up your room or there’s no Hardcastle and Mccormick tonight. You’d think Molly Maid did their room.
It’s a wonderful motivator and when you’re the Canadian mouse sleeping beside the U.S. elephant and it decides to roll over… you best get the hell out the way.
Judging the reaction from Canada and Mexico it’s working splendidly.

  14. PM Thwifty will spew some word salad that will make anybody who isn’t retarded, cringe.
Trump: “Listen up Justy, your time is almost up. I wanna talk to the other guy, Peter or whatever his name is. He seems like a fine guy, a good guy. You, you’re about to be fired.”

  15. I just heard globalist Republican, eyepatch DAN Crenshaw scold Trump that the current Presidente’ of Mexico is a really swell gal and Trump shouldn’t threaten communists with tariffs. I guess Crenshaw’s globalist donors don’t want their Mexican factories to suffer. Nor do they want to stop cheap labor from flowing into the US. They OWN Crenshaw. They don’t own Trump.

The globalist wing of the OLD Republican Party have spoken … and proven just how ANTI American they truly are.

  16. As the nominal PM-in-waiting, Pee-Pee has had three weeks to speak with Trump about the future. But he didn’t. Too scared.

    Pity.

    1. It’s not that PP won’t speak to Trump, it’s just that there’s no point for Trump to speak to PP, until he leads the government.

  17. L – If Pres. Trump’s Attorney-General believes on reasonable grounds, that some persons in
Canada are responsible for the importation of illegal drugs and terrorists across the U. S.
border. Then she can apply to have said persons extradited to stand trial.

The day after that happens, the Conservative Party of Canada, having a clear majority in
Parliament, will be asked to form the Government. Q.E.D.

  18. It looks like the Liberal “plan” is to construct “Spring Structures” and welcome the masses of illegals into their DEI utopia. Fortunately all these welcome to Canada sites are being constructed in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal.
A friend of mine had the misfortune, this week of having to overnight at a hotel at Pearson Airport and 2 of the 3 hotels adjacent the airport were full of migrants and he witnessed catering trucks showing up at all hours of the day delivering taxpayer funded meals to enjoy in their taxpayer funded hotel rooms. Meanwhile millions of Canadians are standing in line at the food banks.
