Kara Swisher portrays herself as a “journalist” but is nothing more than a far left activist. She is the textbook definition of a limousine liberal hypocrite. Swisher says social media companies are private entities that are not obliged to allow just any post on their platforms.
I agree. But since they are private entities, they have the right to allow any legal post if they choose to. They are not obliged to police speech.
Of course the public has the right to try to pressure these companies to disallow certain opinions. But the government does not have that right in the U.S., as it violates the constitution.
Uh Km, yes and no. their section 230 exemption shields them from liability, i.e. not a publisher, so they should vis a vis that exemption not have the ability to act like one by policing speech.
S.230 is a terrible compromise that nonetheless is better than anything else that has ever been proposed. The vast majority of citizens and politicians bloviating about free speech on the Internet have no idea whatsoever how the Internet works. Without the liability exemption, “the Internet” as the average non-technical user knows it would cease to exist. No site could allow comments because it’s too risky. Every single political blog would shut down or be reduced to a syndicated feed from news agencies with actual legal departments.
Beware, Kara Swisher – the road ahead is strewn with mines. “We didn’t make the new rules, but those are the new rules”.
One item in my Quotes page (it was an article on Quillette) concerns a guy who’s driving Uber and DoorDash to feed his family. Until shortly before his recounting, he was a rising star in the “Intolerant Progressive Left” – he aped the narrative, with ever more vehemence and intransigence, and he was moving from strength to strength and climbing the tree to the cross at the top (the better to take a selfie of him on it, thus proving his immortal victimhood).
Then he pi$$ed-off the wrong SJW.
In no time he was shamed, shunned and widespread-cancelled, a pariah in a ‘populist movement’ he’d parrotted so dedicatedly. Thrown out of everything in which he’d once grifted filthy lucre, he was unemployable. Now he drives Uber and DoorDash. So beware, Kara Swisher – this oblivion is stalking and lying-in-wait for you as well. And best of all, it might even befall you because of something innocuous you posted at eight years old – teh interwebz never forget, and never forgive.
