  2. Some years ago I ran across a story about early particle accelerators, and that some of the workers would actually stick their head into the beam and use their retina for checking alignment. The particles striking the retina would cause it to “flash” so they could verify where the beam was directed.

    While these beams were nowhere near as powerful as what caused the described accident, it was –in hindsight– a very silly thing to do.
