Embrace Hollywood!

“Democrats need to embrace Hollywood because this is where they need to come to learn how to tell a story.“. – Michael Moore

…for years, a friend of mine who is a partner at a firm which represents writers, directors and actors had a large bell installed on his office wall. Whenever an executive would close a big deal, they would run to the bell and ring it enthusiastically to the cheers and applause of colleagues up and down the halls.

Recently my friend was contacted by the dreaded H.R. department. Several assistants had complained about the bell. They didn’t like the public celebrations over clients making mutli-million dollar deals because it made them feel badly about their own financial situations. It was, as the saying goes, “triggering” for them.

The bell had to go.

  1. George Costanza’s don’t like it when Lloyd Braun’s ring the bell after a sale. ” Serenity Now! “.
They should not be in “sales”, not being able to grasp they would have no job at all if there are no sales.

  2. “Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.” —Perth, Scotland, 28 May 1948, in Churchill, Europe Unite: Speeches 1947 & 1948 (London: Cassell, 1950), 347.

Yep 76 years later and still we have learned nothing.

  3. No one ever told these people (the complainers and the HR Dept.) “NO” when they were “growing up.” It was an opportunity to correct that oversight….and, yet, the lesson was not instituted.

I worked in a firm where there was a massive differential between the salaries of the producers and the help staff. One of the brokers had purchased a new convertible, and HR asked him to not drive it to work or park it a little ways away from the building entrance to avoid….envy. I’m going to quote him:

“Go F*ck yourself. I worked hard to be able to buy it…and if I want to flaunt it…deal with it.”

There were no repercussions for that truth. It turns out the CEO/owner of the brokerage had a similar car.

  4. Sort of reminds me of a law firm I used to clean at night in the late 80s. They threw a big, loud, obnoxious party when they won a gigantic settlement against an auto manufacturer. Exhibit A – staged on an easel in a conference room for weeks – was a giant foambard pic of the incinerated couple seatbelted in their bucket seats when they were rear ended by a big pickup. I’ve hated lawyers ever since.

    1. Oh, come on. That’s a totally different issue. While I’m not fond of lawyers, the point you made to show that has little to do with the aspect associated with this thread. There’s a difference between “common” decency/exploitation , and decisions driven by class envy and low personal self-esteem.

      1. That’s why I prefaced my comment with “Sort of reminds me of”.

    2. I’d suggest it was there for motivation, not amusement. People died.
But I get it, you clean offices and it sucks.

    3. If it was a photo of a school bus full of lawyers going over a cliff you would complain because the bus was half empty.

That’s an old one (but a good one…:)

  5. If they don’t like the sales bell, they’re really going to hate the going out of business siren.
