April 26, 2024: Reader Tips

This evening we present God Made a Dog. The video features a beautiful black lab that reminds me of my best buddy in San Diego, “Sam”.

A plethora of tales of your favourite dogs would be entirely fine with yours truly. But feel free to share any news tips too.

  1. Just a man in the middle of Edmonton trying to help solve the food inflation problem…

“…a Facebook group for the Edmonton Muslim community offered “young fresh goats” and beef for $6 per kilogram. “Everything is halal,” the post stated. It included a phone number and the address of the Woodcroft garage….”
“…CBC contacted the renter, Yusef Izairi, by phone on Wednesday. Izairi said he was slaughtering the animals for friends, given the high meat prices at commercial butchers and grocery stores. When asked several times about offering meat for purchase on social media, he repeated that he was helping to serve his community and that he was not selling it. Izairi says between 10 and 12 goats were slaughtered in the garage. He says friends purchased the animals from farms. Edmonton police investigated but no charges were laid…”

    Ahhh, the rich cultural mosaic.

      1. To qualify as halal the animal has to be conscious when killed. Non halal slaughter knocks out the animal before killing it. That is the first difference I believe

    1. A moral government would remove tge people that made that law.

But it’s quebec. No morals required or expected.

  2. Yeah, well, I had a dog once…a boxer pit bull mix (brindle) who was my best friend, he sat by the bay window watching for my truck to come home after a night or day shift and greeted me at the door like I had been gone for freaking years. If it was after a night shift he followed me to bed and put his head on my neck and slept with me. Wife and I still chuckle from time to time because he’d hog the bed and snored like nothing else.
I had to put him down after eleven years (cancer)… I truly thought I was going to die of a broken heart. That said I’m thankful for the time I had with him. Friends told me the best remedy was to get another one asap.
Nah. It’s been over six years. I Just can’t do it and I won’t – he was that special.
I really don’t understand people who don’t like dogs … apologies to my cat loving Aunt Freda.
    That’s my story.

    1. Amen, Burton. Having said that, and I’m not being insensitive here, but pets simply have a relatively short lifespan. You sound like you offer a great home for a dog; you’re not being disloyal to your last dog by taking in a new one. Consider that the home you provide may well be hugely more appropriate than an alternate destination…the dog is going to end up somewhere.
Enjoy the time you have together with your dog (or cat) and do what you need to when the time comes.
(I’ve always considered it a pact I had with my pets; I wouldn’t let them suffer. Dragging out a terminal illness would have been selfish on my part…they had no idea what euthanasia was.)

      1. I agree ith you. We lost our black lab to cancer, and a month later we imported a rescue, Jack, from a central Georgia foster home. He’s a spaniel/Welsh Pembroke corgi mix, and loves us every day. There are rescues all around who need a loving home.

        1. “There are rescues all around who need a loving home.”

Isn’t that comment similar to what Justin Trudeau was saying about all the “Palestinians” he is flying from Gaza to Canada?

I would rather have the dogs, and cats and pigs than what he is bringing here.

  3. Who we (schweinie-lovers) are: https://twitter.com/Gerashchenko_en/status/1783200244764746034

Ruϟϟischeschweinen agitprop man Solovyov says “American scumbags stole Russian taxpayers’ money!”
Ukrainian govt official Anton Gerashchenko comments “Like Russian taxpayers would have seen that money otherwise.”

One can also ask, what was “Russian taxpayers’ money” doing in the United States of America in the first place???

  4. Dog is God spelled backward………..
Go find the book Bless the Dogs by the Monks of New Skete.

Kate……it is out of print but available on Amazon…. Buy it. Ive commented here for over a decade….buy it.

    My Favourite quote:

“The biggest problem with dogs is they don’t live long enough. They always seem to leave us when we’re most vulnerable, most in need of their biased , affirming presence.
Dogs make us believe we can actually be as they see us,
and it’s only when they are gone we realize their role in what we’ve become.”

From some random poster with a 14 yr old Golden retriever that limps with a smile for his daily walk wearing booties cuz he drags his back feet..Still got a puppy brain and deaf as his Grandpa… gonna miss that guy.

One more quote from the book.

Dogs are creatures of the heart.
Their emotions are plainly before us, as if their bodies were transparent. Dogs are unable to deceive, even if they wanted to. Too infrequently can it be said of our human relationships, but with a dog, what you see is what you get. Such honesty is precious, creating a trust that never turns on us.

Is it any wonder that we treasure our connection with them?

    Im going to go now.

    1. Those are great quotations, Jeff. I’m having trouble with the “Dogs are unable to deceive, even if they wanted to.” part however. Wife and I had multiple Siberians for over 3 decades, and I can guarantee that they were more than capable of deception… 🙂

    1. Isn’t that about the same as how much earlier men die?
Could the difference be less about social stigma and more about the stress of dating women?
Of course this study is based entirely on nurses, one of the most notoriously promiscuous occupations.

      1. And there was this …

“A 2016 Australian study found that only 65 percent of lesbian women had ever received a cervical cancer screening, compared with 71 percent of bisexual women and 79 percent of gay women.”

Lesbian women versus gay women? We need a score card. I’m confused.

  5. This overlong rant, from a left-wing Toronto based magazine, claims TO’s arts industry is dying:
    https://thelocal.to/hot-docs-canadian-art-institutions/

First off, Canada’s big banks love to support far-left institutions (it helps boost ESG ratings you see). But our big banks have financial worri es, so have pulled funding from a number of festivals. Second, the government-supported arts sector has become more bureaucratic, with high CEO salaries and multiple layers of paper-pushing thingies. We have a economic recession coming, this when the arts community has embraced identitarianism and other far-left ideas.

  6. After many years and more than a few loyal friends, I am convinced dogs are angels. Their lifespan is so short because they burn themselves taking care of us. Dog and humans have coevolved over 33,000 years by some estimates. Maybe longer. That’s a long time wagging their tails.

My current angel is a beautiful golden retriever. She’s the light of my life but there have been others before her I loved too. Nothing beats the companionship of my dog. I get along better with her than my much loved wife.

We have cats too but’s different with cats.

    1. Dinah in Heaven
She did not know she was dead,
But, when the pang was o’er,
Sat down to wait her Master’s tread
      Upon the Golden Floor,
With ears full-cock and anxious eye
      Impatiently resigned;
      But ignorant that Paradise
      Did not admit her kind.
Persons with Haloes, Harps, and Wings
      Assembled and reproved;
Or talked to her of Heavenly things,
      But Dinah never moved.
There was one step along the Stair
      That led to Heaven’s Gate;
And, till she heard it, her affair
      Was –she explained–to wait.
And she explained with flattened ear,
Bared lip and milky tooth —
      Storming against Ithuriel’s Spear
      That only proved her truth!
Suddenly far down the Bridge of Ghosts
      That anxious spirits climb
She caught that step in all the hosts,
      And knew he had come.
She left them wondering what to do,
But not a doubt had she.
Swifter than her own squeal she flew
      Across the Glassy Sea;
      Flushing the Cherub every where,
      And skidding as she ran,
      She refuged under Peter’s Chair
      And waited for her man.
There spoke a Spirit out of the press,
      ‘Said:–“Have you any here
That saved a fool from drunkenness,
And a coward from his fear?
“That turned a soul from dark to day
      When other help was vain;
That snatched it from Wanhope and made
      A cur turn man again?”
“Enter and look,” said Peter then,
      And set the Gate ajar.
“If know aught of women and men
I trow she is not far.”
“Neither by virtue, speech nor art
      Nor hope of grace to win;
      But godless innocence of heart
      That never heard of sin.
” Neither by beauty nor belief
      Nor white example shown.
      Something a wanton–more a thief–
      But–most of all–mine own.”
“Enter and look,” said Peter then,
      “And send you well to speed;
But, for all I know of women and men
Your riddle is hard to read.”
Then flew Dinah from under the Chair,
      Into his arms she flew–
And licked his face from chin to hair
      And Peter passed them through!

      1. The following is called the 10 Commandments for Dog Owners. I believe you can substitute any one of our pets here.
        1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from you will be painful for me. Remember that before you acquire me.
        2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.

        3. Place your trust in me. Remember that before you acquire me.
        4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, and your entertainment. I only have you.
        5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget.
        6. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that can easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
        7. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I don’t understand what you ask of me or perhaps I am not feeling well, not getting the right food, been out in the sun too long, or my heart is getting old and weak.
        8. Take care of me when I get old, you too will grow old.
        9. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say ” I can’t bear to watch,” or “let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier if you are there.
        10. Remember, no matter what, that I love you. Unconditionally.

Shouldn’t the NDP’s leader be a physically and mentally disabled, multiracial (indigenous and foreign person of colour) transgendered illegal immigrant with a criminal record?

  9. I still mourn the loss of all of my beloved Scottish Terriers. No better company.

    The Power of the Dog
    Rudyard Kipling
    1865 –1936
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
    From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
    Love unflinching that cannot lie—
    Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
    Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But… you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
    Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

  10. Best news today, the young killer whale stranded in the lagoon off Vancouver Island was able to leave the lagoon for the open ocean due to a very high tide. Now pray that it finds its pod out in the Pacific.

    1. He ought to be able to find them by the distinctive smell of their piss. I’m told each pod of whales has its distinctive smell shared by all the members. Hence the expression, “as alike as two pees in a pod”.

I’m also told that in fact, seals run in pods, whales run in gams. I mean to ask Betty Grable about this sometime.
