Leaving The Left Coast

But not necessarily the left.

Calgary Herald- Why thousands of British Columbians are leaving for Alberta

StatCan estimates the number to be 37,650 in 2023 alone. For the first time since 2012, B.C. lost more people than it gained, and almost all of those who moved in the final quarter of 2023 flowed to Alberta — a break from a trend where people in the prairie province sought out the West Coast as a place to live after retirement.

    1. Dang, I retired from Alberta and moved to BC in 2014.
I am torn, though, because I love the Okanagan climate way more than Edmonton, that woke shithole.
      What to do.
Oh, wait…Kelowna at least votes conservative, unlike Edmonton
Change what you can where you can, and try for better weather,

  1. “Cullen blended effortlessly into the city’s melting pot. He found a home in Vancouver’s thriving arts scene, drumming for an indie rock band. Later, he began working as a high school teacher, and at age 25, he ventured into comedy, eventually becoming a professional comedian.”

And yes, he’ll keep voting the way he always has.

  2. Who could afford to retire in BC, we were going to but the mother-in-law’s house was out of our price range by three times. We stayed in Nova Scotia bought in a retirement community that has grown so fast it’s scary, now they are building high rise apartments, million dollar single homes that over look a pond. We got in at the low point otherwise we’d be living in a hut in the woods.

  3. What percentage of them will understand that continuing to vote for the same thing as they voted for in BC will cause the same problems?

In the case of the “progressives” it’ll be zero

    1. Yeah, that. We already have enough problems with imported voters looking for a free ride or a government job (but I repeat myself). Great.

    2. Yep. Same thing down in the Exited States.

Doesn’t matter if the “U-Haul Index” is moving from California to Texas, if Texas is just importing the “mobile blue” team.

I mean they all can’t move to Calgary or Austin, can they?

  4. Never go full commie unless you build walls so people can’t escape first. That’s what all the successful commie dictators do.

  5. My buddy in Vancouver posted a pic today of the premium gas price at his local service station: $2.49 a liter.

      1. By discouraging gas use because of, oh no, CO2 emissions. CO2 that naturally occurring chemical compound that acts as plant food. You can’t make this stuff up. $2.49/L wow.

    1. It hit $2.49 for regular for a brief period last summer.

    2. Many or even most of the woke climate change zealots in Vancouver just skip across the border into Wahington state for their fuel anyway. Then brag that fuel consumption is down in B.C. because of their carbon tax. Absolute morons.

  6. Great, and they will bring thier regressive voting policies with them..

Born in Vancouver, I got out.
My family originally came to Alberta, about 1909, I was late in joining them, haha.

No, i’m not a lefty. My grandfather was freinds with Grant Notley. My relatives that knew Rachel, as a girl, disliked her even then..

  7. Did you notice the little propaganda digs in there (the need for the liberal renter’s rights plan, the desirability of rent controls, the good of harm reduction policies)?

The person who wrote this hates Albertans and would like to see them displaced by more people like those featured in the article. Even their featured “conservative” was there as a subtle dig against the UCP govt.

    1. “the good of harm reduction policies”

That’s always my favorite, that one. “Save the drug addicts!”

  8. I don’t think this indicates anything other than people go where the work is. In the 1990’s, B.C. was flooded with workers from Alberta. If you visited any construction site in Vancouver, half the trucks had Alberta plates.

Net loss in B.C. for 2023 was 8600 people, first time since 2012.

Most of the interprovincial migrants came from Ontario and British Columbia. Statistics Canada estimates that 38,236 Ontarians moved to Alberta last year, versus 14,860 Albertans who moved to Ontario, for a net gain of 23,376 people.”

    1. Good point, Don. The 1980s and 1990s saw a flood of people coming into Alberta from Newfoundland, primarily driven by 1. the huge demand for skilled labour for the various oil sands projects, and 2. the collapse of the fishing industry in the Maritimes. It was all driven by economics and employment opportunities, not politics.

Same thing in the US in California. Working people are fleeing California and moving eastward to places like Texas. All driven by the collapse of employment and the soaring cost of housing in California.

      1. Not us. We left Ontario because of politics even though my wife and I were both well employed. Each of us being threatened with firing for refusing to submit to experimental jab madness, our kid’s in remote learning more than any jurisdiction in NA, the self censorship of being around smug woke champagne socialists in the GTA, etc.
Alberta was bad during the plandemic but Ontario took the cake. It’s a basket case that’s slowly circling the drain.

We feel relieved to breathing the freer air of Alberta now. And the sooner we separate the better it will be.

      2. ” … Driven by economocs and employment …” or the lack thereof. EIther way both are much affected by politics right or wrong

  9. To me, the article seems to be saying that Calgary/Edmonton are going to get denser…

    1. Our place built in 1912 on a 25’ lot we bought in 2000, and paid it off in 10 yrs. Now the city assess is 4x the original purchase.
The city is approving 4 to 8 unit townhomes on 35-50’ lots, so yes density is increasing.
May be time to sell it to the kids and move to Portugal.

  10. The other day I chatted with a Cochrane transplant (to a smaller town in southern AB). Too much construction for all the people moving there.
As an Albertan since birth I really don’t want more people here. And I especially don’t want the people who voted their crap provinces into crapiness! I have a conservative friend who moved from ON 2 years ago. He vocally tells all newcomers voting anything other than conservative is not wanted here. The lefties are quizzically astounded.

  11. You mean the province many of these people professed to hate and didn’t like?

We have our own in-country lefty economic migrants, who knew.

    1. And that’s what bothers us the most. Being called all sorts of names and then having them move in and telling us how they did it better, while crowding the place out.

  12. For the same reason the Wisigoth moved into Roman territory. They were getting crowded out.

  13. no worries ….. I’ve heard that the illegal migrants crossing the us/canaduh border will easily replace those who are leaving …… demographic switcheroo
