The Professional Institute of the Public Service says the changes to the hybrid work model are “deeply concerning.”
“We urge the government to halt its push towards arbitrary and one-size fits all policy changes and to engage meaningfully with us to develop a rational and flexible telework policy,” PIPSC said in a statement released shortly before the federal government’s announcement.
“Public service workers deserve a fair, well-defined approach to hybrid work that considers health, safety, and operational efficiency while delivering the services Canadians rely on.”

Doing some research, back when in 50’s, correspondence from Gov personal came with, Sincerely Your Obedient Servant. They knew you they served, who paid bill. Will never return, but can always dream.

It makes sense for some of the jobs to be remote if they don’t require F2F interaction with clients. I work 100% remote as an insurance broker and I’m actually more effective working from home than I am at an office with people continually interrupting me to visit. I also enjoy the convenience and savings.
I have no issue with PIPSC employees working remotely if it makes sense. The government can lease smaller offices, pay less utilities, save some $$. If your work role requires you to be in a seat to serve people who come to you, you need to show up or look for work elsewhere.
My 2 cents.
But you actually work, and turn a profit. You are not a professional leech. If you don’t work, you don’t profit, or you are relieved of your position. There are too many leeches on the public taxpayer cow and most of them aren’t worth what they are paid. And they have better benefits, better holidays and better wages than their private sector counterparts. Still feel okay about them working remotely? And by the way, they are like ticks – very hard to remove.
Sean – I have to phone CRA more often than I would like, and always get the message that there could be a cell phone involved which could have security issues. Given that I’m discussing clients’ issues at a fairly intimate level, this is – to say the least – disconcerting. If the government is moving to remote working, then it has to sort out the security issue.
I was on a cell call to some CRA flunky, got the same warning. Within an hour of the call, three more calls came in from numbers not in my phone book, none of which I answered & none of whom left a msg.

There is a great savings to ‘work from home’ workers…..if you can fulfill your duties while laying around in you jammies or at the ski hill or in many cases from the beaches of the DR, Costa Rica and Florida, how about ‘adjusting’ the paychecks accordingly.

PISPC is a very small set of govt employees, the biggest group is IT and there are also accountants and lawyers. They do not interact with the general public so they’re working from home will not shorten the wait time at your Service Canada office.
When you walk into a govt office to get a passport you’re dealing with a PSAC member who is most likely a CR-04 or -05 (CR = Clerk Recorder), a member of the lowest paid and educated group in the civil service.
PIPS members are quite effective working from home as I witnessed first hand in 2020-22. Our IT guy covered us from home by accessing our machines remotely at 17 heliports/airports from St. John’s to Prince Rupert, and would come in one day a week to perform physical tasks such as changing hardware. My buddy James the CPA did all his work from home auditing the spreadsheets and budget projections.

During the pandemic, watched how offsprings coped in their various jobs as everything was shut down. Vet clinic – stayed open with heavy restrictions then gradually removed restrictions in order to properly treat patients. Another kid was and – so far as I understand – still able to do a fair bit from home, but rather suspect the company hiring said kid has seriously upgraded security and technology so kid can function effectively.
Third offspring – did the remote bit but had serious issues with same. Didn’t help that lived alone and – at that time – was forbidden any contacts. Kid returned to the office as soon as it was opened and has since staunchly maintained that in-office works best. Quite apart from benefit of having the work day defined (as in from enter office to exit same), kid says that the interaction amongst employees is seriously better when can just wander into a co-worker’s office or cube for an informal discussion instead of having to organize a Zoom call.
Myself, work from my home office but do find in-person meeting with clients to be more productive than a series of emails. Call me old-fashioned, but I enjoy the face-to-face conact.
It took TWO YEARS for the Manitoba Vital Records to send me a copy of the marriage certificate of my grandfather. Because, Covid, of course. That’s what happens when you let people “work from home”, which is a completely laughable concept.

I don’t understand this boomer mentality that workers must be physically present in order to be considered “working”. That said remote work needs to have appropriate monitoring of performance and the ability to fire non performing people, just as in person work requires. Anyone concerned that being present is required to see work being done has not experienced office life enough to know how easily non performers can waste a day away doing nothing yet still be physically present. I think the real issue is performance monitoring and the ability to fire lazy staff and not if the work is remote or not.
Or maybe the “real issue” is these minions contribute nothing beneficial to the tax payers of Canada.?
