Twice Is Coincidence

@johnkonrad

BREAKING: A NY tugboat captain has reported to @gCaptain “container ship APL QINGDAO lost power while transiting New York harbor. They had 3 escort tugs but 3 more were needed to bring her under control. They regained power & were brought to anchor near the verrazano bridge”

  1. Maybe someone should be taking a closer look at some of those satellites circling the earth for a focused electromagnetic pulse capability.

Russia, in particular, was trying to rig one of those for anti-satellite capability for the last decade…but that doesn’t have to be the only target.

    1. >Russia, in particular, was trying to rig one of those for anti-satellite capability for the last decade

      *facepalm*

      1. Technically a laser is such a device but I’m sighing and facepalming with you anyway. If you look into the fuel these ships burn (used motor oil etc) that might offer a clue.

      2. It must be difficult for you to find a hat that fits, what with all the facepalming. That being said, you seem to imply that focused EMP is not a possibility. I assure you that, not only is it possible, it already exists in nature.

        1. Yes, I know. Its used for testing. And its massive.

Other EMP emitters are one-use devices – they require explosives in a conductive armature.

They all require themselves to be in a magnetic field with some free electrons available. So to do this in space requires you to have an absolutely massive nuclear explosion to cause it. – remember, satellites aren’t in the upper atmosphere.

Then, there’s the drop off in intensity over range. You’re not doing ‘focused EMP’ on ground targets, through the atmosphere, from 300+ miles in space.

*Finally* there’s the idea that you’re going to precisely target a ship – and nothing else – with a EMP that no one else can detect? Against electrohydraulic – not electronic – control systems? Are you kidding me?

Take your tin foil hat off – then try to find a normal hat that fits without it.

        2. When a Yorkshireman confronts his elected representative, that’s a focused “Eee, MP!” attack.

  2. Further down the thread, there is a rumor that another ship, the Grand Sierra Leone lost power last week leaving new York, and it looks wonky if you look at it’s track.

  3. I’ll be waiting for more info, but I am curious if this ship was also having power problems while docked.

Glad to see someone** has decided that keeping tugs around until a big ship clears the port is a good idea. It sure paid off this time.

**Just a WAG on my part, but I doubt that it was National Transportation Secretary Breast Feeder Guy Mayor Pete who decided anything. Wait for it, though. Monday, he’ll declare the Verrazano bridge to be racist.

  4. Read a comment that the ship power must be “OFF” in Eastern ports..
    Cause Global warming..
And bunker fuel systems do not like this.
    The fuel must be hot.
System control..something way beyond Planet Saving Politicians intellect.
If these “power loss events” are only occurring as ships leave ,politically correct ports, with cold fuel systems, during cold periods…
Then the creatures that made these new rules, might have to pay for their own bridges..

    1. Now this is more credible. I await the TSB report, if that organization still remains uncorrupted.

  5. Russia, Russia, Russia is deploying an EMP weapon on American soil. It appears as though Obama’s, err Biden’s sanctions didn’t take. Slava Ukrainia!!

    1. Hey, let’s really gear up in the tin foil. Anyone remember that “incident” in Cuba with embassy personnel that suddenly developed headaches, hearing loss, and nausea? Hold on, I’m going to need another roll of foil….ok.

Well, EMP and EMF will cause all of those things.

    2. If a ship was disabled by an EMP it would not regain power minutes later. If electronics are fried, they’re fried. There’s no temporary.

      1. Logic is not allowed.
You might be accurate in your assessment Bunny.
Manufacturing quality has really tanked and add on how corrosive the Oceans can be just add another layer that engineering isn’t quite looking into everything that might get wet.

        Bringing to question…is water wet?
        Depressing thought if it is…
Still trying to get a pickle factory story… and failing.

    3. Right?
Because you can focus an EMP.

And you can focus one energetic enough to melt the wiring inside a -metal- ship, which is a floating Faraday Cage. Two or three times, apparently.

And then after the wiring is melted, Scotty can briefly re-fire the engines two or three times, and finally restore power to the ship, but too late and it hits the bridge anyway.

And there are no tug boats on call in American ports, apparently, in case something bad might happen. This last one I actually believe.

    1. Much like airplanes, when things go wrong they usually go wrong in ports because that’s when the smooth and consistent operation of the vessel is disrupted.

I’m currently leaning towards the Baltimore bridge incident being a black swan event, but it’s going to look like a pattern because any similar event that would previously not have rated a mention in the shipping news will get front page coverage.
