Carbon tax, round ??? Fight!

Conservatives blast pro-carbon price economists as ‘so-called experts’ It doesn’t cause inflation, didn’t you know? Then why were my groceries yesterday 40% more than 2020?

Meanwhile, the carbon tax fight is heating up as the price is about to go up, again, on April. 1, fittingly April Fool’s. Conservative premiers are lying about carbon pricing: Trudeau, while Moe addresses Commons committee.

Sorry I didn’t have time to dig into this one myself. Not enough hours in the day. After all, I had to spend half an hour at Sobey’s on Wednesday pointing out to my 17-year-old son how prices of soup, meat, green onions and the like have gone up 40% in the last four years. In the end, a cart which wasn’t even full cost $300, whereas in 2020 it would have cost closer to $210 or so. I kept asking, “And who do we blame for this?”

What do you think the right answer was?

  1. I appreciate Moe’s attempt to make a rational argument, and he will still lose that argument because he accepts the premise – that there is manmade, catastrophic climate change. You cannot win the argument about climate change because those that make the argument are not concerned one iota about the climate – they want to destroy the economy, and control / kill the populace. And you can see this lack of concern in the actions of our PM and his cabinet. None of them practice what they preach. If they were truly concerned, the PM would use zoom calls instead of burning jet fuel, as an example. He would reduce his security contingent. He would fly commercial instead of private. He would downsize his dwelling space and move closer to work at the capitol. But he does none of these things because he doesn’t really believe in manmade catastrophic climate change – it is an excuse to control you and advertise his false virtue.

    1. Thats is precisely the issue.

Every Premier in the country still continues to kiss the colossal BS that supposed Man Made Climate Change is First off REAL, & that it can be mitigated.
Every Premier Kissing Trudeaus ASS with a whimpering “please pretty please don’t increase it”. I’m sure Trudeau & Guilbeault are laughing at the that.

      We ALL know the truth.

Bottom line is: “Climate Change” is the Banner for the utter destruction of the Western Hemisphere. As has been noted in many places: We are the Carbon they wish to eliminate.

And what will Canadians do…??? with this BS Increase.?
NOTHING but bend over and take up the (_i_).

      1. Both CodexCoder and Steakman nailed it! If you play a poker game with the Devil and use his terms you are in trouble—–Athropogenic Climate change is a Fraud , Hoax, and a Ponzi scheme! Like Dr Roy Spencer of NASA said in the film ” Climate: The Movie”–Everyone of the Scientists in working Group1—–know the facts that CO2 and emissions are not affecting the climate !!
They will never say anything because their jobs are depending on —–“THE BIG LIE”

So Premier Moe —don’t use their language you are too good for that ! Say we believe in a Pristine environment !

    2. TurdHole also believes in his own self-importance. He’s the ruler and, as such, is entitled to live in luxury while the dirty serfs scrape by. Every dictatorship throughout history, Feudalist and Communist, has operated under this premise.

  2. In BC we don’t get rebates. Even if we did it wouldn’t come close to covering the cost which is kind of the point of the tax on breathing.

    1. Yes we do get rebates in BC, but only if you’re below an income poverty line. Does it refund all the carbon (dioxide) tax the poor pay? Probably, if they’re retired and don’t do much, it will cover their direct payments like N. gas and gas for the car. But if they’re working poor, probably not.

But the carbon (dioxide) tax is a tax on everything. If you eat, you pay the tax. Does the rebate cover the indirect taxes they pay? I doubt it.

  3. For starters, all Moes and Fords out there should watch Climate: The Movie on YT. Before it’s pushed even lower under the radar/yanked out completely.
Maybe they will understand that climate change is NOT man made. After that, the debate with ShinyPony&co can go ahead.

      1. Me too. But they know they have to pretend it’s real or the mainstream media will tear them apart.

        1. I feel they don’t have to pretend it’s real —Dirtman- it’s time we all take a stand and say this Anthropogenic Climate change is not based on any real science! Until we make that mark in the sand and say you shall not cross! This climate B.S. will be shoved down our throats!
And it’s time to start saying, he’ll yell it out Free The West!

  4. As happy as I am that my Premier is fighting back on carbon, I’m more than a little disappointed that this backbone was totally missing during the scamdemic. Also, it’s a little sad to see conservatives battering themselves to bits fighting on the ground the Left has chosen. CO2, the gas that all humans exhale, is not pollution. Any tax on CO2 is an anti-human tax. We’re not doing it. That should be the argument.

  5. Taxing/reducing carbon will change the weather just like banning guns will stop crime.

Top reply on Twitter is correct. Moe accepted the premise, which is a lie.

You can capture carbon, it takes labor. Planting trees building ecosystems etc. Just labor and time. It’s landscaping and gardening and getting dirty.

And you need big machines to do it sometimes. Hundreds of gallons of diesel.

No Liberal will ever do that. So they lie and try to take money.

  6. Explaining fully to your kids why food prices (amongst all other prices and services) have increased as the past 4 years of #Libranos life has shown, is absolutely basic to being a parent. Ask them again, “why is your dollar so much less valuable now, and why did this happen?” Be certain they understand, and can explain why this is so.

I’d say it’s absolutely the right thing to do, and not only because these same basic lessons were given to my kids on economics, and freedom, in their formative years. They’re well past being convinced of anything the gov’t merely states, and know full well what they actually do is the key.

Carbon tax / emissions: At no point does any of this carbon argument convince me that the gov’t is doing anything right.
I don’t care, if CO2 emissions doubled, or tripled, and tax evasion for Canadians should be the national sport.

I am relieved that Premiers Moe and Smith are taking an active role against the federal gov’t, but do think AB/Sask. separation is the way forward. At some point in the future, maybe after 2 or 3 terms, the federal #Libranos will return with a vengeance and renewed hatred for liberty and western Canada, and don’t say we didn’t see it coming. They’ve been at this for +150 years

  7. Letter to Toronto Star Editor (that won’t ne published!)

A necessary addition to the Star headline: “Carbon tax debate should be about policy AMONG AN INFORMED ELECTORATE.”

The column implicitly assumes that the government’s policies are fact-based, cost justified and effective for their intended purpose – to defer global warming. The public deserves to know whether this is true.

Let’s look at Canada’s original carbon tax. It was supposed to reduce CO2 emissions by an impressive 90,000,000 tonnes! Wow! Left unexplained was the effect on global temperature.

Peer reviewed science tells us that one tonne of CO2 in the atmosphere results in a warming of 0.0000000000017 degrees Celsius. Simple arithmetic now shows that Canada’s original carbon tax (if everything went according to plan!) would defer global warming by 0.000153 degrees C annually, or one degree in 6536 years.

Now, some activists might argue that this is still an appropriate policy choice and an effective use of taxpayer funds. However, having deliberately been kept ignorant of the facts, voters are denied the right to express an informed opinion.

    1. Great opinion but there is always a but! CO2 basically has no warming effect if you take that , in effect CO2 is one of only gases in the atmosphere that takes radiant heat through the Tropopause and Stratosphere back into space .Therefore it holds small amounts of heat at the surface atmosphere but is basically the only real component to get rid of radiant heat!

  8. You know something is wrong when you have to pay $17 + for a 500 gram box of frozen battered fish.

  9. The biggest lie is that CO2 is a climate driver and if we tax the living sh*t out of Canadians CO2 will no longer be something it wasn’t. Hmmmmm, mull that one over.

    1. That’s why they call it a “carbon” tax. I point out that it’s not carbon, it’s carbon dioxide. Not a lump of coal or some sooty black stuff but an invisible gas that plants consume and is a very small part of our atmosphere. They don’t like to hear that. Picture the end of The Body Snatchers. Shreiking, “Climate Denier!”

  10. Not sure if this is still the case but doesn’t the carbon tax encourage buying cheaper alternatives, even if they are ‘dirtier’?

    From 2018.
“Still, the most important question is my first one: How come in the middle of a trade spat with the Saudis, Ottawa isn’t even imposing the same taxes and regulations on Saudi oil that it imposes on Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland oil?
It looks as if, a) the Liberal government isn’t serious about standing up to the Saudis and b) they aren’t serious about their own campaign to reduce emissions and save the planet.”

  11. As long as you follow the “Science” That’s POLITICAL SCIENCE FICTION that Turd Jr. pushes your full of shit.

  12. Shopping at the LC last week I asked the clerk when Trudy was raising the booze tax again, she said “That forking Trudeau” I was stunned at her response. I don’t think liberals have any idea how they are now loathed by the peasants outside of Laurentian elites.

  13. CBC is doing a great job. I recently had Canadians tell me what a good thing the carbon tax is and how it will help save the planet.

  14. Carbon Tax…eh

Where do ya think the $$ came from to give to VW..??

  15. “The group’s advisory board was made up of people from all political stripes, including former Progressive Conservative Jean Charest.”

You seem to have misidentified Liberal Premier of Quebec Jean Charest.

    Also to the letter:

Claim 1: “Since federal carbon pricing took effect in 2019, Canada’s GHG emissions have fallen by almost 8 percent, although other policies were also at work. A new report from the Canadian Climate Institute shows that federal and provincial carbon pricing, for industries and consumers, is expected to account for almost half of Canada’s emissions reductions by 2030.” – Note that the last year data is available for is 2021, so this claim is misleading at best, and potentially wrong, given that the “policy” with the biggest effect was the covid lockdowns.

Claim 2: What the evidence shows: Canadian carbon pricing has a negligible impact on overall inflation. “According to the Bank of Canada, carbon pricing has caused less than 1/20th of Canada’s inflation in the past two years.” – For some reason, when the bank of canada “studied” it, they didn’t include any secondary effects, such as increases in costs to producers, or primary effects such as the cost to both diesel and propane, because they only studied gasoline.

Claim 2a: “a central feature of the federal carbon price is that approximately 90 percent of the revenues generated are rebated back to households.” The design of this payment is such that it is a money transfer program from carbon intensive businesses to low income people, while still harming the middle class. The 90% also doesn’t include the increased revenue to the government from G/HST collection on the tax (the tax on tax).

Additionally, according to Budget 2023, in fiscal year 2021-2022, the government collected $6.3 billion from the “pollution pricing framework” while returning $3.8 billion – my math isn’t as advanced as “economist math” but that comes out to only 60.3%, not 90. It appears to get better in the 2022-2023 projections going to 89.6%, but those are only government projections.

    1. None of that takes into effect the fact that world wide emissions are going up much faster than anything we could do to lower ours. So it’s all futile, even if the global warming scam was true. (Which it clearly isn’t.)

      1. As that new Climate movie says, China is burning more coal than all other countries combined. And a bunch of that coal comes from or through BC.

If Canada shipped LNG to China so they could convert 20% of their powerplants from coal to natural gas, the drop in CO2 emissions would balance Canada’s TOTAL CO2 emissions. But “there’s no business case” for LNG. https://www.canadianenergycentre.ca/graphic-canadas-largest-export-to-china-is-coal/

Stupid stuff like this, along with the jetsetting/lifestyle hypocrisies on full display, prove that they’re either really dumb or really malicious. There is no provable case for intelligence and benevolence here.

        1. They wouldn’t convert them, they’d just build LNG power plants beside them. Coal has an advantage that it can be stored on site, which is being missed by the brilliant leaders who think the gas will always flow…

      2. I was only addressing the claims made by the pro-carbon tax economists, who seem to buy the government’s propaganda.

  16. Parliamentary Budget Office says carbon tax costs average canadian family $1500/year.
True Dough says his carbon rebate gives canadian families average of $800/year.

Where’s the other $700/year of my money? What a math moron.

  17. The first thing I’d do if I was part of the Trudeau Liberal-NDP government is admit that the carbon tax is not functioning as planned and the unintended consequences outweigh any benefits. The carbon tax is not dropping CO2 emissions in any meaningful way nor is it changing the risks of droughts, floods, fires etc. Some of the unintended consequences are national unity divisions, it makes inflation problems worse, voters are angry, it increases poverty and decreases the competitiveness of Canadian export businesses.

As evidence : The Liberal Party all but admitted it is causing poverty and hardship when they dropped the carbon tax on heating oil. Saskatchewan dropping the carbon tax on home heating bills immediately reduced provincial inflation. Everyone can see national unity problems, particularly on the western prairies, is ramping up. Forest fires were awful last year despite our carbon taxes. Our business trading partners and trading competitors are not following our lead and imposing carbon taxes so our exports are less competitively priced (and Canada’s economy is heavily reliant on exports.) At this point, no one can ignore the anger directed at the Trudeau carbon tax.

What exactly is the upside to Canada’s carbon tax? Given the hardship it has caused, no politician in Canada will ever even be able to whisper the words carbon tax without being tarred, feathered and run out of town…is a win, I guess, but probably not the one the Trudeau Liberal-NDP government was hoping for.

    1. None of that matters, because justin is a sick demented psychopath, and freeland is just as bad.
He should be playing hockey with paul bernardo for the rest of his life. They’re both cut from the same cloth…they could be twins.

      1. The carbon tax has become this government’s signature vanity project and their ego won’t allow them to let go of the dream. However, the will of the people will ultimately prevail and both the carbon tax and the Trudeau Liberal-NDP coalition will be banished to wander in the political desert along with their expert economists and bought off journalists. The only question that remains is the extent of the damage to Canada’s economy and national unity.

  18. There are no rebates in BC, except for “the poor”.
So, if you make more than $60K per year here, the ENDP identifies you as RICH, and must be plucked at any and every opportunity.
Especially if you’re a homeowner, then you are a very special rich evil person, to be taxed accordingly.

  19. Let the Climate Cultists like PM Shit-for-brains spout their nonsense about man-made-climate-emergency sky-is-falling bullshit.
Merely reply that if the sun disappears tomorrow, we’re all quite dead the day after (prolly fckn less time than that).
    Then watch their heads explode.

  20. Dear Leader stating that “Conservative Premiers are Lying” is priceless.
Almost as funny as himself and the other elected idiots giving a standing ovation to a genuine WW2 Nazi..twice.
Here we see Dear Leader, for whom the truth is so toxic that it will never cross its lips, telling us about lying..
Well finally it has a subject on which it has some real experience.
    Could be a first.
    What is next?
Advice on being a good husband?
    Or fiscal management?
I am now so far gone,I consider all who enable Dear Leader to be my permanent enemies.
This State of Thuggery, exposes all who defend it as Fools and Bandits.
    Treat them accordingly.
For they brought us to this place.

  21. “Yesterday, the Prime Minister asked Premiers what they would do to reduce emissions instead of a carbon tax.”

CO2 is not a pollutant. Next question.
