Broadcast Dialogue- Most noon, weekend CTV newscasts cancelled as part of cuts at Bell Media
Almost all local noon and weekend newscasts on CTV will come to an end as part of a massive workforce reduction at Bell Media announced today that will see 4,800 staff positions eliminated.

Multi-Skilled Journalists will replace reporter/technician teams in Alberta, Manitoba, Québec, and Atlantic Canada “to match newsgathering practices in other provinces and at CTV Local Stations across the country,” with additional correspondent changes to be made in Ottawa.
What is a multi-skilled journalist? Have they learned to code?
They’ll film themselves with their smartphones, like the Youtubers who have taken their viewers from them.
“Videographer” was the word all the cool kids used to use in the late 1990s & early 2000s, especially on Much Music and other Moses Znaimer media properties.
All the cool VJs would walk around with 35-pound TV cameras on their shoulders as they went to interview obnoxious rock stars and reality TV goofballs.
Then Moses sold out to Bell and Bell drove them, and everything* else it touches, into the ground.
(*Almost everything. They still have their quasi-monopoly on cell phones and continue to milk Canadians with the highest data fees in the world)
“City” newscasts (Rogers) are that style. It’s unwatchable.
It’s the kiddie news, amateur hour.
And CTV is going to emulate that? SMH. Not that their previous newscasts were any better, what with the endless gubmint PR “news” read verbatim, Trump hate, and kitty/puppy/whale stories.
They media outlets don’t know what NEWS is anymore. And its continuing lack of viewership emphasizes that conclusion. But, they’re too stupid, or arrogant, to fully realize everything that’s wrong with the MSM model.
And yes, that end of CTV midday news starts today. Wonder how many of their ‘faces’ have been pink slipped? Could this have been the end of Sandie Retardo?
Back in the A-Channel days, they held the camera up to a window for a mirror reflection. Man if that didn’t scream “CHEAP!”
Moses Znaimer started that back in the CityTV days. Inspired by – I’m not making this up – Max Headroom, where the Network 23 journalists went solo with a shoulder cam.
I don’t have a problem with local news being lean and doing on-the-spot reporting with an iPhone. Phone cameras have long since been good enough and even a journalist should be able to do basic video editing on one. I’ll take accurate, honest reporting first and worry about production values later.
It’s a start.
Beat me too it.
When you crap in the pool your living in…all for government handout without doing actual journalism.
Generated tales have been instituted with Trudeau falling for it each and every time. Hence a new unnecessary holiday that he generated on bogus claims and charges.
Don’t expect people to swim in the crap that they have been spewing with no consequences at lots of government monetary support.
Faster please
Braking news.
Breaking news about the broken news
Well, isn’t this the perfect follow-up from the two previous posts.
YES! faster please!
Is this mob just like the government funded media organisations? As an Aussie I don’t know much about them. How many employees do they have as 4800 seems like a huge number to sack.
4800 jobs over the entire Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) corporate entity.
Bell Media is just one small part. It owns almost half the English TV channels and their websites in Canada, plus 58 (after today) terrestrial radio stations (AM/FM), and a satellite TV provider.
Bell Canada owns the largest land-line phone network in Canada and it is one of the largest cell-phone providers.
BCE owns 50% of Toronto Maple Leafs NHL hockey club and about 10% of the Montreal Canadiens hockey club.
“…in an open letter signed by chief executive Mirko Bibic, said 4,800 jobs “at all levels of the company” would be cut. Fewer than 10 per cent of the total job cuts are at Bell Media specifically.”
If they lay off Austin Matthews that will save them over 25% of their $40 mil. right away.
“Bell, Less Talk”
LOL – “lambs”
“What Bell is doing, it’s just saying, ‘If you don’t think we will sacrifice lambs on the way to get what we want on the regulatory front, here we go,'” said Winseck.
“This is the first killing on the platter.”
The CRTC announced last November it would temporarily require large telephone companies, namely Bell and Telus Corp., to provide competitors with access to their fibre-to-the-home networks in Ontario and Quebec within six months. (The rule doesn’t apply to Canada’s other major carrier, Rogers Communications Inc., which uses a cable network.)“

They haven’t offered news in years. Less propaganda is always a good thing.
L – … replacement news feeds for Canadians will be by bots on Tik-Tock and
weather reports from the Gulf states via Al Jazeera.
Presstitution is not so profitable, after 4 years of spiking the people and the
economy with the clap.
Some of these soon to be unemployed ‘journalists’ could seek partial redemption by engaging in some honest investagative research for a change into any of the major issues of today, especially including justice, climate, immigration, taxation and government spending, election interference, etc, etc, etc.
And they will seek to remedy the problem by doubling down in the same direction that brought them to this point. One can only pray Scott Reid will be among them. Nah. Too much of a Liberal lickschpittle.
I must say that due to having ignored them all as hard as I can for 14 years, it makes no difference to me if they all go out of business. I already boycott them 100%.
I will say though, the thought of Sandy Rinaldo and the rest of those news readers selling pencils on the sidewalk outside former CTV headquarters does bring a little smile.
Now do the CBC, CityTV and GlowBall. May ruination fall upon them like the bolts of Jove.
GlowBull’s CeO was on his knees a few months ago, begging for more filthy lucre (thanks Mr Rotten) to save his business, “or else!”.
It could be imminent. GlowBull is every bit as stupid and annoying as CTV, and, Corus’ share prices are in worse shape.
BCE got hammered today on the markets, there was no reward for attempting to stem the bleeding. Let’s not forget their other idiot network, BNNBloomberg, the marijuana channel, as useless a “business news” channel could ever be. Same Leftwing Climey Changey anti-west propaganda as CTV. Good riddance to all the faces and lefty propagandists!
I found it pretty easy to ignore them. And many times I thought, well, that’s fun, but who cares about my opinion? Apparently it mattered.
“Multi-Skilled Journalists will replace reporter/technician teams in Alberta, Manitoba, Québec, and Atlantic Canada …”
AKA – One stooge with a Sony Handy Cam
On Contract.
Does this mean we’ll get ‘The Flintstones’ at noon again, like we did when I was a kid?
It would be far more interesting than some of the ‘news’ we get.
I remember that! I’d try to remember what year, but I don’t want to know.
Or reruns of The Buckshot Show.
Popcorn Playhouse!
Hey, I was on Popcorn Playhouse for my birthday!
I remember when the drive to the CFRN studios was a ways outside of town..
Also, we kids got to see the prizes that were behind the numbered boxes on the spiked wall we threw the styrofoam balls at, it wasn’t a random toss.. Yes, that’s right, they had a wall full of spikes/nails around children, ohhhhh mommaa and we all survived!!
I didn’t get the prize I was aiming for, a little steel safe piggy bank..
CTV’s parent must be seriously choked that CBC marches on, unaffected by these upheavals. CBC doesn’t have to show a profit, and has state of the art facilities, coast-to-coast, bought and paid for. It’s not that I have any sympathy at all for CTV, and their urban attitudes, but so-called private media is being driven to its knees by our very own Pravda.
They’ve also cancelled W5. Another reason to celebrate. Regime water carriers in the MSM better learn to code.

This meme was up the other day, seems fitting for our gay parade urinalists looking for work.
Ah W5. I remember them doing a story on ejections seats in the late nineties. The military gave them all the relevant flight safety investigation reports and gave them an interview with the Colonel in charge of Flight Safety. They turned around and stabbed the CF in the back, basically stating the military was hiding the problem, refusing to do anything about it and deliberately putting aircrew in danger. I am glad those snakes got the chop.
So do they have to pay back part of the $600 million payola the Liberals gave them? I mean all they need is some talking head repeating what the Liberals tell them to say, and some flunky interns (preferably gay bipoc) to cover dog bites man stories.
Goodnews. The more cutbacks and layoffs in the establishment media, the better.
Maybe they can learn to weld.
The CTV report mentioned that the government is making it difficult for them to make money but didn’t mention once that the same government gives the CBC more than $1 billion every year. The cowards can’t say a bad thing about their beloved Liberal sugar daddy’s.
4thou 8hundy for local news? That’s the problem right there.
About 480.
4800 over the entire BCE corporate entity. Bell Media is just a small subsidiary.
“…in an open letter signed by chief executive Mirko Bibic, said 4,800 jobs “at all levels of the company” would be cut. Fewer than 10 per cent of the total job cuts are at Bell Media specifically.”
No loss.
