1) Putin couldn’t care less about NATO, as it’s proven itself over the 70+ years of its existence to be a defensive alliance – you don’t poke it, and it won’t poke you. And that being the case, why would Putin care whether Ukraine joined NATO if he did not plan all-along to attack Ukraine?
2) Aleksandr Dugin is a far-right-wing Russian philosopher who’s been calling for Russian hegemony in Europe – all of Europe – for a long time; one of his statements was that Europe should all belong to Russia, “from Dublin to Vladivostok”. Dugin’s daughter was blown-up in her SUV recently, and Dugin has been much quieter since – leading some to suspect that Dugi’s rants were drawing the wrong sort of interest from the international community, and the bomb was either aimed at Dugin, or a stern warning to him to tone it down; in effect, “a horse’s head in his bed”. And you can ask Boris Nemtsov what happens to people who disagree with Putin.
3) Putin has shown his empire-building hand a couple of times already, grabbing Abkhazia from Georgia and Transnistria from Moldova – the World Court at the Hague declared both operations unlawful, and Russia’s claims on them bogus. And,
4) Russia is suffering a truly awful demographic crisis. Its birthrate is ‘WAAAY below replacement and has been for years – except for the Muslims in its eastern republics, and no pure Russian wants them becoming a majority of the population. But there’re 40 million more-or-less ethnic Russians just over the border in Ukraine – why not just grab them? Indeed, while murdering many Ukrainian civilians (read “Bucha”) the Russians have also kidnapped thousands of Ukrainian children and shipped them back to Russia for adoption – and the rest of the Ukrainians? The poor, deluded darlings are only imagining they don’t want to be Russians again.
5) Putin has said in public that the break-up of the Soviet Union was one of the biggest catastrophes ever to befall Russia. He wants to rebuild the old Russian Empire, and believes that every part of the world that used to belong to Russia, still does – and his minions have declared that Poland and the Baltic States are next.
In short, “NATO? – maskirovka, tovarishch!”
When Ukraine was first invaded by Russia (2014 in Crimea) it actually had a law in place that prevented it from joining military alliances (including NATO). The law was repelled in the wake of Russian invasion, as Ukrainians didn’t feel they would be able to defend themselves.
