  1. Russian collusion! Not exonerated! Emolument! White Supremacy! Climate change! Yes, most newscasters are NPCs repeating the talking points.

  2. Non Existence Character… did I get that right?
Phonies and fake characters in the real world destroying it with their entitled attitudes.
No wonder Santa is so depressed that the bad kids have taken over and has destroyed the Christmas Spirit.
He had to retire too this year.

Oops forgot to sign that nondisclosure agreement.

  3. Real world danger from this is our Hospitals
Don’t have a clue that they are drowning their patience sitting up and jamming a tube down their throats as they’re lungs filling with mucus.
From first aid on drowning victim is you turn them over into a recovery position trying to get rid of the water accumulated in the lungs.
All this expensive technology shot to shit by ignorance and greed of money and fake status.

  4. NPCs are big with my kid in high school, we have fun identifying them when we’re out and about, she also does some hilarious moves like the NPC walk and the NPC wave. I used to be offended by dehumanizing or othering of my fellow humans but those days are long gone, we are in a war.

    1. In a lot of games upper level NPC’s are programmed to send you on a side quest for treasure and potions.

  5. computer games.
when l was plodding away on a DEC VAX there was an ‘adventure’ game that after a certain time if you quit that session you couldnt start it up again until later. that was 1985
then it was star trek klingons on a commodore 64 mid 80s
then chessmaster on a ibm AT late 80s.
since then nuthin. whats all the fuss about computer games?

  6. More trivial B S . No offence Kate, we seem to be drifting into some sort of unidentifiable ether.

    1. It’s more relevant than you think, but the layers of pop culture BS are obscuring it.

In a computer game based on the player having a single avatar that roams around the game world interacting with it, the player’s avatar is called the Player Character (PC). Any talking character the PC interacts with that is controlled by the computer (and not another player) is called a Non Player Character (NPC).

Now, programming a computer to hold a conversation is hard, and it’s not what the person who bought the game wants. So game programmers typically program the NPCs – townspeople, the local militia, a shopkeeper – with a small number of lines of dialogue that they utter randomly when the player hits the “interact” button. And that’s it. Beyond wandering around the game world on a predefined path and saying one of their three lines when a player clicks on them, they have no other actions, ambition, or awareness. And no matter what the player does – hit them with a sword, try to talk to them, set fire to a baby right in front of them – they’ll just keep walking their scripted path saying their scripted things.

This behaviour is amusingly similar to that of your average leftist urbanite. They don’t think, they don’t react, they just go about their scripted day, saying the same things over and over again: “Orange Man Bad”, “Inflation is down”, “Single-payer health care good”. They’re robots. NPCs.

  7. I find the concept of a NPC really useful and sadly ironic. Being of an age where women bristled at being objectified, I see so many of the “nice” people who followed my generation have actively embraced the non player character so they can drift through life with a minimum of hassle.

  8. Maybe being a free thinker is a glitch in the program.. Who wants to be the odd man out?.. Who wants to be left standing in the game of musical chairs?…

But I will tell you.. Some of the best people I have met in my life.. The most interesting.. Are the ones with high IQs who make it all up as they go along.. Potential blowing in the wind.. I miss them more than I care to admit..
