For readers unfamiliar with the locale, Portage Place is a large shopping mall in downtown Winnipeg that has largely been taken over by vagrants, drug addicts and any number of citizens with a violent disposition. Is there any wonder that ticket sales for the Winnipeg Jets are way down?
I accompanied a friend to a medical appointment in Portage Place. While they’re being seen I walked to the food court.
It didn’t take 3 minutes to see a chair get aimed at a security guard after the drunk bitch spit at her.

Winnipeg: old Ojibwe word meaning “our dung heap”.
Our two nations have imported and paid domestic breeders to litter our country’s with a vast underclass who have no hope and no prospects. They will be lifelong dependents of The State … leaches and criminals. Harsh? Fine. Prove me wrong.
Litter our country’s what? Complete the phrase so we know what you are talking aboiut.
oh look. its my grade 5 grammar teacher the first person l found out had ocd.
hi kenji; like your flow of constant affirmation of rights truth and liberties.
‘countries’, JohnPeg. Swap that out with ‘country’s’ and see how that works out.
Something about dropping litters of dependent children was implied …
Unfortunatly, in Canada, the great unwashed happen to be the first here in most cases. Lifelong dependants of the state, and it shows.
Portage Place. Built to clean out the politically undesirable low rise, quaint shops, similar to Queen West in Toronto. Queen West now has a similar fate as Portage Place.
I used to have to spend a lot of time in Winnipeg because our HQ was there. I always found it odd that downtown Winnipeg basically closed down at 6 P.M. Now we know why. That was before the team moved to the new arena. The Jets should have stayed out in the boonies.
The Jets attendance drop has little to do with PP.
NHL hockey is an elite sport. Expensive. Winnipeg is a great hockey town but lacks both a large affluent population capable of supporting a team and a vigorous private sector business community who can pony up cash for seasons tickets.
Winnipeg is a government town.
The Jets only work because they have a billionaire owner willing to keep them afloat. When the day comes that ownership changes, they’ll be on life support and shortlisted for relocation.
Contrast with the dismal Arizona Coyotes (nee Winnipeg Jets 1.0) whom the league refuses to let die despite now playing out of a college arena that doesn’t even seat 5000.
The NHL is a strange beast.
Walk two blocks in any direction away from Portage and Main. The term “slum” comes to mind. Loserpeg.
I once went to Winnipeg and took a cab from the Airport to downtown. About a block from my hotel, an intoxicated heavyset fellow started pounding rather abrasively with double fists trying to hulk smash the cab hood at a red light. The middle eastern cabbie didn’t take to kindly to this and they started fighting. I got out of the car and walked the block to the hotel while they were distracting each other.
Did you leave your driver a tip?
Yeah. “Jab. Jab, Uppercut, and he telegraphs his right hook.”
Good tip right there.
“But it became apparent early on that Portage Place wasn’t working as intended.”
Starting with the above understatement, followed by several hundred words of money-losing, value-destroying, government-begging, blame-laying journalistic “achievement.”
The whole sorted story boiled down to a short, sad 2 minute read…..

Everyone knows this ends in “government” (us citizens) handing over a gigantic pile of cash to some unaccountable social-justice group and/or Indigenous “corporation” to re-create Utopia on Portage Avenue. Right across the street from the other social-justice, Indigenous utopia taking shape at the former Hudson Bay Company department store.
It is going to end with “government” (us citizens) handing over a gigantic pile of cash ” but it will go to
” True North ” (Chipman/Jets ) who is trying to take it over. It’s like they haven’t got enough taxpayer money since they built that little arena and brought the jets back.
I had very fond memories of Winnipeg as I was at the University of Manitoba in the early 1970’s. I was thinking of moving there and my sister suggested that I revisit the city. We did so on the Sept. long weekend in 2009. I was appalled at the downtown core. It had been vibrant in the early 70’s, lots of stores, movie theatres, restaurants. Now there are lots of empty store fronts or only Money Express types. As well, it seems as if the downtown core is now an Urban Indian Reserve. I am so glad that I decided NOT to move there.
If you do go to downtown Winnipeg, try to walk around the trash, vomit and pee on the sidewalks, and not be too grossed out by all the spit on the windows.
Been there, done that.
