This is worth stressing. Stand on Rockall, and you’re standing on the only piece of land for hundreds of miles in every direction, in some of the tallest seas in the world. (In 2000, oceanographers recorded individual waves up to 29 metres tall over the Rockall Trough.)
So you’d be mad to try?

It appears to be a broken link
Yep.
She shaved the trailing “e” of the link:

Thanks for the “fix”
God help me, I love stuff like this. The funniest thing about this damn rock is that the UK keeps affixing plaques to it as a sign of acquisition, and other parties keep showing up and removing them. Some idiot resided on that thing for something like 45 days. I think he meant to go 60, but a storm blew away some of his supplies.
As the author mentions, Greenpeace showed up and claimed it as a “micro-nation”. All you had to do was pledge allegiance and you were a member.
The whole thing is hilarious. Fishing rights, resource rights….etc. I’m looking forward to the day that someone goes and blows it up and then claims that the sea has risen so much due to climate change that the poor Rockall no longer is accessible. That will be a sad day indeed. All those poor mollusks without a home.
A bit like the Whisky War for Hans Island between Denmark and Canada.
So small Google Earth doesn’t know it’s there. However, there’s a Rockall island in Ontario.
SDA: Fun and educational.
it would be challenging and given Elon’s resources l would, and NOT as some vanity project, explore ways of occupying the island by building a hugely high structure on stilts to keep out of the waves and things could be rigged up if even that wasnt good enough to simply ‘batten down the hatches’ and wait out that one world record wave of ‘whatever’.
whew.
however long it took to eventually, depending on the condition and fracturing of the rock, to determine the best configuration and number of stilts. in other words, a very highly engineered project and EVERY step of the way there are always TWO groups on any part of the construction, one to do and one to inspect. and critical points get extra autonomous insectors. heck even outsiders for a 4th opinion.
perhaps 3 brutish strong ones or perhaps more than a dozen each ending in a spot where the rock was sound. all consideration to the birds which were there first.
what research? climate studies, dangerous wave experiments somewhere vessels fear. heck if it worked out one could lease space for all manner of activity. all subject to the strictest conditions. it could even maybe be a location for some radio communications relay thing, the whole setup powered by the most robust mini plutonium reactor ever built. make it an international project but maintaining brit jurisdiction to get them on board.
it could be a fascinating project and only after the important stuff is done, in 30 years maybe then the extreme vacation types are allowed.
anyways. happy new year sda
