Keeping Up Appearances Down on the Farm

Guest post by SDA regular, James MacMaster:

In a belated response to lacklustre investigations and weak-kneed prosecutions of anarchists who undertake farm invasions involving criminal acts, our MPs are patting themselves on the backs for coming up with a new federal bill related to trespassing on farms.  But if you were thinking that this is some kind of endorsement of the freedom and right to own, use, and enjoy property, well, give your head a shake.  As it is with Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Association, our cowardly MPs just can’t take a public stance on anything resembling fundamental freedoms.

Conservative MP and ag critic John Barlow, who sponsored the Bill, said it was vital to deter people from illegally entering farms because of the risk of, get this, spreading disease among the animals.

Stay tuned for more dislocated shoulders in the hierarchy of Canada’s farm organizations as they pat themselves on the back for getting their Sugar Daddies to come up with this tough, timely, and necessary response.

  1. “spreading disease among the animals”

But they don’t have any security cam video, right? Asking for a friend.

  2. Seems to me there are already enough laws in place and that the non-farm pigs need to enforce the laws.
Like they did with such zealotry during the scamdemic or whenever they’re directed to by the lying politicians who say they can’t direct them.

    1. Exactly. “… tough, timely, and necessary response.” is meant sarcastically. The only thing our MPs have accomplished by doing is is to weaken any residual notions that “A man’s home is his castle.”

What we have now is peoplekind’s barns should be safe from germ-carriers.

      1. The problem is, that it’s true. The farms most likely to be targeted are those that are so-called “factory” farms in which biosecurity is essential. And the same goes for cropland, the spread of disease to crops is a real threat in some instances.

So, while I understand the criticism, giving the law a biosecurity angle probably strengthens it in the face of a court system of ideologically liberal judges who might otherwise weigh a protest intrusion in a “charter of rights” frame and acquit them.

        1. A court system of ideologically liberal judges would be (is) predisposed to acquit in any event.

Now, if chickens could catch covid, that might be a different story …..

        2. I’m not sure there is much hope in the biosecurity angle Kate, when the article says the act only prohibits if “it is an unlawful entry”. The judges and prosecutors these days will accept any argument justifying the entry to “save the animals”. It is a concern we always have when hiring people or even allowing visitors on our feedlot. I’m afraid that this will do little to dissuade the activists. The cynic in me says the Conservatives will begin a fund raiser on all they have done to help the situation. Thanks for bringing the article up Jamie.

  3. After you get raided the fifth or sixth time, you get used to it. No one should be allowed to mow there lawn on An August afternoon in peace when poor souls are lost and only want to borrow your property. Or when people sheltering in your machine shop at 2 AM, and you notice and they drive away, only to return and ram your garage doors – well they only need driving lessons and are creating job opportunities. Or when they are simply waiting for your friends and your neighbors wonder why they are there and four friends come out the bush and beat your neighbors- well they were just out enjoying nature. Nothing to see -move on! And there is so much more to not see.

  4. The disease being spread is the mental contagion in people who think they should be allowed to trespass with impunity. Too late to stop that from spreading. The only solution is to eradicate that herd and start over.

  5. Sorry, not, but just because they are identify as “conservatives” that does not exempt them from being moronic imbeciles.

  6. Shoot, shovel, and shut up will be making a triumphant resurgence in the coming years, I reckon.
