  1. they paid $1200/sq ft. when usual building costs in that area are about $400/sq. ft. While the end product showcases multiple “green” options. Looking at their results is like looking at the Mona Lisa and implying that this level of result is something every one can work to achieve…but if I had a spare $7.2 million, I would spend it something that had a wider beneficial effect.

    1. 1. There are NUMEROUS bio-based (usually soybean) spray foam insulations. One hardly needs to use hemp (but your pot-smoking friends will be impressed) to be “green”

I used “Foam it Green” … because it was pretty much the ONLY spray foam insulation I could get during the COVID shutdowns.

      2. A basement!? On the beach!? And they’re “worried” about global warming sea level rise!? Whitey Puhleeze!? Great … you have “removable” partitions in the basement (hint: all wood frame walls are “removable” with a sledgehammer) … but you’re gonna have a basement full of seawater … doh! How’s that gonna work out? Esp. When the seawater is eating away at your crap fly ash concrete foundation walls?

      3. And yeah … you tore down a house … but tell yourself you’ve recycled all those materials. And then you proudly claim you’ve ditched the old nasty, chemical-based rigid foam insulation around the old foundations. So tell me … how did you recycle THOSE “awful” building materials? What poor people are using your leftovers and destroying THEIR pristine environment? Puhleeze!?

This is called “woke building” by box-checking. Got the global warming boxes checked … the nasty chemical building products box checked … and even the Pot-smoking hemp enthusiasts box checked. My prediction? His house will turn to sh*t in a few years and the new owners (with GIANT NYC checkbooks) will be tearing it down … again.

      1. “There are NUMEROUS bio-based (usually soybean) spray foam insulations.”

Yeah I’m wondering how long it will be until the rats discover this stuff, like they did with the plant-based wiring insulation that’s being used in modern autos, with predictable results.

        1. I ONLY used the foam insulation for the ‘cathedral’ ceilings (no attic space). The foam is sprayed up against the underside of the plywood sheathing … only about 3” thick in my mild climate zone which is like R-21. Then, I installed R-30 batts of fiberglass insulation in the remaining rafter cavity. Then 5/8” drywall. The assembly is completely sealed … no rodents. And about R-51 !! When we have frost in the morning … the warmth leaking from my neighbors roofs melts the frost. I look at my roof … and it’s all frosty because none of my heat escapes to the roof surface.

The advantage of using that 3” of foam against the roof deck is that no ventilation is required for the attic. The foam seals every crack and the insulation keeps the roof from sweating on the warm side. It’s a very common insulation assembly here in N.CA.

Spray Foam insul. is expensive … and filling an entire 12 rafter cavity is PRICEY$$$ … but my friends in Sask … would benefit from an insulation value of R-7 +/- per inch thickness x 12” = R-84 in their ‘cathedral’ ceilings

      2. Wow, about half way through that article my Pretentionometer was pegged in the red and I was picking up high intensity Virtue Signal Bursts every few seconds, which triggered my Woke Alarm.
My therapist (a guy named Cooter in my gun club) says I’m going to need an 80-mile trip to the range in my F350 diesel and at least four AK-47 mag dumps, followed by a couple of cans of malt therapy, to work through this trauma.

        My pronouns are ESAD/GTFOH.

        1. I don’t EVEN want to know what therapy is needed when your Gaydar starts pinging … LOL
You probably carry sacks of potatoes to the top of a 6-story building and toss them to the streets below … hahaha ha ha ha

PS … I read an article like that and literally throw up a little in my mouth

  2. We’re such good people, look at us. Can you write an article about it? It was only $1200/sf USD.

  3. How can you not laugh at people who place so much credence in Climate change, spend a fortune patronizing the concept…and then buy a second home?

How is that not the very definition of hypocrisy?

  4. If you want to be a true environmentalist you should live in a 1000 sq ft townhouse, own one small car which you seldom drive, and never take vacations.

Anyone who lives differently and thinks they’re some hero of the environmental movement is fooling themselves.

    1. Their carbon emissions soared when they brought in the contraption from France and the workers with it.
What a load of virtue-signaling crap.

    2. If you want to be a true environmentalist you should live in a teepee made of buffalo hide on the bald-assed prairie, made from animals you killed yourself w/ a bow & arrow w/ a hand chipped flint tip, or wooden spear w/ the same.

  5. Their Cape Cod Home Isn’t Small …

So much for the “small home movement”, eh? Everything the NYT printed after that statement is undermined and made a mockery after that initial clause.

Dude! Your vacation home is 6,000 sq ft!!!! And you’re telling yourself what a noble steward of the environment you are!? Whitey Puhleeze!?

  6. They sure spent a lot of fuel and resources to avoid using petroleum products….

In the long term, it will use more as the hemp breaks down and need to be replaced more often.

  7. The guy is a delusional asshole who needs to be slapped just for making me roll my eyes 15 times.
I hope the place is so air tight it constantly smells like his stupid wife’s farts.

  8. Yay! Clap! Clap! Clap!

Congratulations on your nomination for the Gore Cup! I can hear the Presenter’s speech now:

“For elevating virtue signalling to an art form, displaying stalwart perseverance in defiance of common sense, and for forging ahead while damning the torpedoes of well-deserved ridicule and contempt ….”

  9. Jamie
You should wear “protection” to avoid getting the CLAP!

And 6000 sq ft around here is the garden shed.

        1. Of course he’s vying! Vie vouldn’t he? And around here, 6000 square feet means the neighbour is walking his pet millipedes again.

  10. The place has the character of an unfinished cement basement.

    Hang a moose head somewhere. It’s a start…

  11. I find this amusing. Canadians, as a whole, should be praying that anthropomorphic climate change is, indeed, a real thing, and a major problem. Because Canada is one of the countries that stands to gain significantly economically. As the temperatures rise, those northern reaches of Canada will become agriculturally productive to add to the, already productive southern reaches of the country.

There’s no down side to rising temperatures. If I was living up in northern Canada, my carbon footprint would break records.

    1. Oh, but the melting permafrost and escaping methane! The climate chicken littles will twist a miniscule warming in a hellish cold environment into unmitigated climate disaster. And no mention allowed for the remains of trees exposed by retreating snow fields, trees that thrived earlier in the Holocene.

  12. How much “greenhouse gas” is produced by adopting measures to reduce green house gas,

  13. They have punched their First Class tickets to Climate Heaven for sure. Now excuse me while I puke.
