Stating the obvious

When you see media articles puzzling over how the pandemic seems to have made society less civil, you just have to wonder how brain dead someone must be not to have seen this coming.

A lot has happened in the time since March 2020, and some Canadians feel that one of the characteristics the country used to be known for – kindness – may no longer be an accurate stereotype.

They’ve turned to social media to ask whether anyone else has noticed society being “increasingly unkind” and “disrespectful” since the pandemic.

CTV is soliciting opinions in regard to this problem, but it’s unlikely anyone who strays from the narrative is going to see their thoughts publicized.

  1. I try to be civil to others, but I wish the maskers would just stay home if they’re that scared of my bare face in public….

    1. Couldn’t agree more with you. So to paraphrase our beloved PM “What are we to do with these people?” If they are so brainwashed into believing that the masks are protecting them why bother with the upcoming ‘new injections’. If the first injections didn’t work when they were explicitly told they were experimental and the masks didn’t work, and the ‘social distancing didn’t work then why continue following the government directive? Perhaps it is to prove that they are still ‘good’ people or just members of the herd that are too lazy to think for themselves.

    2. When my wife and I saw a masker, outside, on the weekend I shook my head. She said I shouldn’t let it bother me so much, they can indulge their neuroses. The problem is, I replied, those people are the ones that wouldn’t bat an eyelash loading (unjabbed) into cattle cars, bound for camps or worse, cheerlead by media and our own “we’ve got a Charter of Rights and Freedoms” government. That’s what was revealed to me the last couple of years. So, effen right I’m angry and bitter.

      1. Do not just shake your head, verbally accost them just as they would you for not masking when it was mandated. Let them know that masking is harmful to their health and that your tired of your tax dollars being spent on hospitalizing idiots.

  2. The China pox allowed for the unrestrained outburst from the Karen’s and Kevin’s who suddenly were allowed to have power for the very first time. Most of them shouldn’t have any more say, than deciding what’s for supper, and only with a normal person giving final approval.

  3. The Covid years didn’t create incivility in Canadians, it simply revealed the ugliness that was already there but hidden behind a polite facade. Alberta and Saskatchewan have experienced the true face of hostile, vindictive Canadians for decades.

    1. Exactly this. All of these things were present before, Covid just acted as an amplifier, and brought them to the fore. Covid was a much a social contagion as it was a physical one..

      1. It revealed who people truly are and if they can stay true to their principles and ethics when under pressure. Most people can not, obviously.

    2. Right you are LCB, I also recall many folks blatantly cheering when Ft Mac went up in smoke a few years back due to wildfires. “Serves those western b’stards right .” …. Even here in BC !

Funny that how fast these folks forget about just how much $$ Alberta/West contributes to equalization payments / financial well being of the rest of Canada.

      1. Central and eastern Canada’s attitude towards Alberta and Saskatchewan is a weird, toxic relationship. I’m a pro-separation so the sooner Alberta and Saskatchewan leave this dysfunctional and increasingly authoritarian confederation, the better.

  4. Recently, I was chatting with a sales associate in a local boutique and she was going on about this very subject. The owner of the shop walked by and said, “I blame Trump.” Wow! I told her that our uncivil society was around long before Trump. TDS is still alive and well in the Great White North.

    1. Their hate doesn’t count in their mind… only when they start receiving what they’ve been putting out for decades do they start to complain about it

  5. So glad we sold everything, retired and moved outside of Cochrane (Ont) living semi isolated on a lake.
I only see a few persons per week in the nearby village & no assholes.
    Loving it since 2016

    1. Ah, Cochrane Ontario, the birth place of Tim Horton, hockey player and doughnut shop co-founder.

Can you still “swim” with the polar bears there?

  6. I have always believed that the narrative that Canadians are so “kind” and Americans so loud and rude has never been true. It’s just arrogance by those that have never gone anywhere. An attempt to try and make us feel superior.
A narrative and practice often stated ever since Justin’s step dad held the highest office. A deflection and manipulation by the elites to serve some devious purpose.
I have always been more likely to be prevented from changing lanes in Saskatoon than in Salt Lake City or Sacramento.
Rudeness is a universal personally trait that isn’t some how checked at borders.
If anything because “faith” has been historically intertwined through American institutions such as family and governments I’d argue Americans have a better “kindness” record than Canadians.
All one has to do is look at the charitable giving comparisons by individuals and even the leaders of the two countries to see this.

    1. Agreed. I used to be bemused by Canadians conceited, self-congratulatory, sense of moral superiority. That has now turned to disgust and shame. Covid let the mask (pun) slip for many (clearly not all) to see.

To your other point, are we truly the kinder country when our “caring” institutions are mostly government derived? In the states, it can be broken down even further: there have been studies that charitable giving is much higher in red states than blue, and generally far higher amongst Republicans than Democrats. Yet the right has let the left mischaracterize us as selfish and uncaring, that they own those traits. Just more typical leftist projection.

    2. Agree with your comment. A good many American family and friends of this commenter. Wonderful people. Are there obnoxious Americans? Yes. Are there obnoxious Canadians? Yes. It’s called human nature. My experience is that a great many Canadians are arrogant and smug, believing that they are somehow morally superior to Americans. Those of the “smug ilk” should consider the parable of the Mote and the Beam.

    3. I deal with US and Canadian clients, and the type of work I do has weekly performance reviews – most Canadians give me a 4/5 and not much in comments. I will say the Quebec folk I deal with do leave a nice comment. Americans on the other hand 5/5 and appreciate the effort I put into it.
Well every 500th client gives me a 1/5 because they don’t like me for some reason.
So yeah, the kind compassionate Canuck is out the window with me. Rather work with US types now.
      Oh, I’m in Calgary.

    4. I work for a lot of US companies and my experience has been that Canadians are less boisterous than Americans are, generally. I think that’s what most people mean when they say Canadians are more “polite”. In terms of graciousness, kindness, and compassion – none of which are quite the same thing as “polite” – the Americans I’ve dealt with have near-universally been better than Canadians.

It probably says something that I rarely deal with Americans on the coasts, though. Mostly the south and midwest.

  7. Oh that is rich coming from a medium that called us names and demonized the unvaccinated daily. The hypocrites started the lack of civility, we are called hateful if we refuse to bow before the government shakedown grievance mongers. We are called violent and dangerous if we protest what the media deems marginalized people, who are in fact granted and bestowed more rights than the rest of us. It’s a hate crime to burn the alphabet people’s flag but it’s considered tolerant to burn our nations flag. I refuse to become a verbal battered woman because the media are sniveling and crying because our side is fighting back and winning the culture war against the left’s grievance mongers. They called us granny killers, diseased people, haters, bigots, but they refuse to own the narrative they constructed.

    1. Agreed in every word, especially from the hypocrites at CTV. This network supposedly wants to know “…if you think people have become more disrespectful and unkind in the last few years.”

Oh please. Thousands of business have been crushed. Suicides, spouse and family abuse has gone through the roof. Violent crime increased heavily. Drug use including fentanyl addiction and death have soared. Do these morons imagine these disasters would have improved people’s behaviour towards each other? Particularly in a situation where the country was governed by its most incompetent Prime Minister of all time – the Coward in the Cottage?

Yes, you are correct. We have become more unpleasant. And it’s targeted to those we despise the most – the clownshow called the legacy media. For the reasons you stated, they earned it. And the results are clear. The Prime Minister no longer makes any public appearances. The legacy media no longer attempts to do ‘man on the street’ interviews. The reaction in both cases would be vitriolic.

      1. Yep, and to make matter’s worse is the left’s white flag waving while screaming hateful profanity at us whilst telling us to “Tolerate the intolerant”. You wanna watch a liberal melt down, when they spew their venom be kind to them-really they don’t know what to do with all their hate and venom when you don’t respond in kind.

      2. Couldn’t have said it as well.
Thanks for saving me a lot of typing!

In any event, turdo and his CTV lapdogs will likely use the results to push for controls on “mean” behaviour.

  8. Since the pandemic?

Try since 2015 when the Marxist inspired class, race, gender, sexual orientation, geographical social dividing began wholesale with an election.

    1. Since the pandemic? I’ll go back even further, to 2000 when Bush II “stole” the election. My eyes were opened to how unhinged the Left truly is.

    2. I agree with that. I have found many Canadians to be particularly intolerant of anyone who deviates from the leftists party line. When Harper was in power, the vitriol coming from the left was unprecedented. I guess we were seeing it because of the increased use of social media in that period. Very, very nasty, and all of it emanating from the left. Some insisted we needed to get rid of Harper because of the disintegration of civility — completely ignoring that they were the key source of uncivility.

  9. Canadians are a kind and gentle people which is why they’re world leaders in MAID, COVID lockdowns, masking, genetic slurry injections and extending a helping hand to North Bay Nazis.

    1. I celebrate with chocolate like a Palestinian on 9-11 when journalists die so I’m probably not the one to ask.

Hey Tim’s had orange donuts for the Indians the last few days. They also banned me from their restaurants and treated me like a second class jogger….

      Where’s my freakin’ donut?

    2. Yea but, those police horses politely trampled the racists & misogynists blocking streets with bouncy castles – A resident Ottawa elitist would say,

  10. Wow, those comments on reddit! If that’s any reflection on the population at large, despite the lies and fear, then Ontarians are truly beyond hope and deserve every bit of what they deserve.

    1. My thought too.
Those comments are worthy of a post all to themselves,so that we might bask in the self congratulations of a bunch of “Nudgers”.
Proclaiming their advanced “Niceness” as they badmouth and blame everyone with a point of view differing from their talking points.
      Upper Class twits of Ontario?
“Breaking ones arm, patting themselves on the back”

  11. Call *regular grassroots people* protesting the government a small and fringe minority with unacceptable opinions, and wonder how their language becomes toxic against their basic dictatorship. Similar things been running in different European countries, Sweden, Germany, France, Austria, Finland, Netherlands working as examples. Hillary Clinton and Trudeau just made it very visible what is a Western trend. Deplorables!

  12. Canadians have never been kind, polite yes but never nice.
Also,we all should verbally accost the maskholes just as they would you for not masking when it was mandated. Let them know that masking is harmful to their health and that your tired of your tax dollars being spent on hospitalizing idiots.

  13. The kindness historically associated with Canadians can be attributed to the people who lived here at the time. Since then, POSs in power have inundated the nation with population-replacing levels of foreigners using every excuse imaginable.

Throw in those same POSs repeatedly stealing from us, purposely reducing our rights and standard of living, forcing us to pay for propaganda, attacking our beliefs and way of life, indoctrinating us and our children with every perversion imaginable, and lying to us repeatedly.

At the end of the day, there’s little kindness left to go around. And perhaps most of what remains would be more aptly described as being “simple”.

  14. Makes a fellow wonder.
Having the supreme Court of Canada confirm a sceptics analysis of Pierre Trudeau’s
“Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms”,confirming 60 years of State Lies..
Seeing the Federal and Provincial Minions making bank as they abuse and cripple the productive (taxpaying) citizens..
And after seeing how utter useless and power mad “Public Health Officials” are..
Of course we are going to be “Super Polite” and positive when dealing with our “helpers”.

    Betrayal.
And the recognition of said betrayal.
    Will trigger retribution.
And 60 plus years of deceit and outright lying, finally exposed, will produce a long duration retribution.
Last weeks exposure of the total ignorance of all the idiots who “represent” us,will only make the tax payer more surly.
And that anger will persist, until the citizen decides on the proper reward for all who “help” us.
    Cha cha changes…
