  1. The bear and cougar story made me chuckle. Had an acquaintance about 2km away who hunted coyotes with his radio collared dogs horrifying squishy Liberals in our area. I had a “none of my business, so have at it” attitude and back then seeing a coyote in the area was as rare as hen’s teeth. Alas, he packed it in due to age, sold the dogs and retired… guess who came back a few years later to steal Fluffy from the back porch?
Now they’re thick as thieves. Take that hipsters!

To be fair, the idea of chumming around with bears and panthers is on Kipling.

  3. It’s not that shooting a few bears teaches the other bears to be afraid.

Instead, it’s that a bear who becomes habituated to humans will remain that way. A small number of bears commit all the human trouble. So you are shooting the bears that are willing to invade human spaces. The remaining bears have no interest, and prefer to stay away.

It’s like crime. A small number of people commit the vast majority of crimes. If you do not arrest, or prosecute, or you keep letting them out, you get a lot of crime. If you keep that small number of people in prison, then crime will plummet. It’s not like the law-abiding see the criminals getting caught and say to themselves, I guess I’ll remain a law-abiding person, but otherwise I might have decided to change my ways and become criminal. It’s the fact that once you get rid of the small number of trouble-makers who commit a large amount of trouble, things are quite a bit better.

  4. I blame Teddy Rosevelt … for starting the whole cuddly Teddy Bear narrative. Oh! And that German company Steif … for making cute, cuddly bears with articulating limbs. I blame them too. And you can throw in woke eco-embracing mental patients like Timothy Treadwell too.

    1. Back in the day, were wont to go camping at a very nice public campsite with a lake so small no motor boats allowed. One season, we heard the rumour there was a mother bear with cubs. Spouse thought it would be a good idea to check this out, and took the offsprings and an axe. They did find Mama Bear and cubs. Mama Bear wooshed her cubs behind her; spouse wooshed offsprings behind him. There was a minor staredown, then Mama Bear and cubs moved into the bush.
Needless to say, I was not amused. We were fortunate; suspect Mama Bear (in that area) had figured out humans to a certain point and realized could safely back off with the cubs.

      1. Nothing in nature dies of ‘old age,’ Even the King of the whatever gets decrepit and then becomes a meal.

        1. Ohhh, I dunno ’bout that. See The Phantom’s post below. And Thomas (below) may have an argument for Fords leading in that category, too.

  5. Disney is to blame for the same number of
    deaths that ford is(auto maker)
ask the real questin….how many births are
    they responsible for??

  6. New Yorkers like to see the nice deer in their back yards, but they pay for it in blood on the highway. I’d see a car with a deer sticking out of it off to the side of the Sawmill Parkway about every two weeks when I lived down there in the 1990s.

Deer in numbers plus trees plus NO FENCES on the parkways equals a lot of deer-meets-Honda action.

  7. Denial of objective reality is the entire basis of the Anthropogenic Global Warming industry. It is the most widely spread myth that media frenzy has fueled. Every other anti-human philosophy is simply an offshoot of that nonsense.
