They could stick someone in any day up to the day before the election – and still win. They demonstrated that with Biden.
Biden never managed to get more than 1% of the vote in primarys when he ran for Pres before – proving even dems don’t really like him.
But it matters not when you can break every election law, rule, timeline etc and simply create the desired outcome days or weeks after the fact.
