To be fair, the fewer they sell, the less money they lose.

Ford also had the Edsel.
Jeffy
And yer point? Try doing some research before stupid posts. The Edsel, like Studebaker, has some flaws, and many good points, just that the public was not ready for them.
Yeah but they also had the Pinto. And remember their self-reversing transmissions? I actually had one Ford that did that to me; fortunately I was sitting idling in a rental lot, waiting to return it.

So you were renting an Edsel? And pintos were great for stuffing 350 SBC’s in, that cranked about 500HP!
Edsel was a marketing failure. The pinto was/is a totally different discussion, as is the vega.
As a Studebaker driver…..I resemble that remark.
Kid
I owned 4 of them, and liked them.
So?
Teslas are for show-offs who can’t afford to buy and never drive anywhere. I hope that they have astronomical electric bills and fully enjoy days when there is no electricity (sarc on). NO grids are ready, so it will be a nightmare. I hope that insurance companies start charging HUGE fees.
How much fun would a road trip be, worrying about the next EV charging place, if it works? And what to do when it is charging in areas where cell reception is weak. Oh, perhaps an old-fashioned picnic lunch in the snow.
I would not park one in my garage if you paid me 100K a month.
Please do not close gas stations yet, as the public does not want the Edsels of this decade. Brick bats to federal corporate welfare for yet another wasteful program to build eco-unfriendly heavy batteries that will chew-up city roads.
Drove from Calgary to Vernon a couple of weeks ago. Stopped in Golden to grab some snacks and noticed a charging station and a guy had his Tesla plugged in. While I was sitting in my car, he opened the back hatch….and what did I see? A fossil fueled generator! Guess he didn’t want to be sitting on the side of the road in the Rogers Pass.
Expensive crap.
“astronomical electric bills”
And not just electric bills either. EV’s not using gasoline, their owners don’t pay all our voluminous gas taxes – and gasoline taxes pay a lot of what little road maintenance our dreadful potholey roads get – so numerous governments are proposing thumpin’ great user fees for EV’s, because the roads have to be maintained (?) for them too.
And I betcha’:
1) in the fullness of time, user fees WILL be implemented, and
2) in the interest of fairness, user fees will be applied equally to gasoline-using vehicles, despite us continuing to have to pay all the gasoline taxes, carbon taxes, etc etc ad nauseam…
Anybody wanna buy a (slightly) used EV?
Precisely fc.
No One….
The F-150 Lightning is taking the EV market in the wrong direction. Assuming we are killing the planet we should not be building vehicles that dim the lights of a nuclear energy plant every time we plug it in. EVs should be limited to 3,000 lb and 50 kW so that commuters are forced into smaller and lighter vehicles. For someone driving from Mississauga to Toronto every day there is no need to sit in a 9,000 lb truck. For the farmer, EV trucks will be of limited use for quite awhile. Battery technology is improving but the energy density is still low compared to gas/diesel.
“…there is no need to sit in a 9,000 lb truck.”
…and tearing up the roads in the process of driving it!
Yea well that’s just too bad.
I will continue to drive my 20 yr old GMC 8750lb 2500 HD Sierra….on the roads whose maintenance I damned well pay for in every 240 L fill up.
You think they use the gas tax to fix the roads?
Correct on the 3000 lb limit and 50 kw.
Nissan Leaf or similar car would be the way to go.
Although I would prefer a hybrid if I had no choice to obtain or keep an ICE vehicle.
Steve
Good post. I am all for developing EVs, but not with me tax dollars, in any form, let the market determined the out come. And spot on with your 9000 pound truck comment. I had that conversation in here before, many years ago.
Or they could build large vehicles as plug-in hybrids with small (electrical) motors and small batteries to handle the around-town aspects of driving at which heavy large vehicles are inefficient and limit battery capacity to what can be charged at 110v overnight, otherwise sticking to the practical, functioning basic design of ICE and ditch the Grand Transformation horseshit.
Reuters: Lithium producers warn global supplies may not meet electric vehicle demand
The green “revolution” is an elite-driven, top-down technocratic project on an irreversible crash course with total failure.
The entire EV scam is designed to subsidize EVs for rich people, while the poor and middle class take public transit.
Interesting statistic. About two out of every one hundred F-150 purchasers are gullible fools.
Oh well, could be worse. Think about the stats for tesla buyers.
To paraphrase the AMC president on meeting with the board regarding the sales of the Gremlin. ” We are losing money on the sale of each car, but we are making it up on volume.”
And my guess is that virtually EVERY electric truck that was sold was bought by government. In other words, taxpayers are forced to pay for them.
I hadn’t realized it but Ford of Europe ended production of the Mondeo, their family sedan a couple of years ago. Now they’ve just ended production of the Fiesta, their subcompact hatchback and Britain’s best selling car ever. They’ve dropped a couple of other models and will be axing the Focus in a couple of years – basically they’re blowing up the entire range and all the goodwill associated with said models in order to go all electric.
Bankruptcy in five years.
Ford is shifting away from producing sedans worldwide. The only ‘car’ in the Ford North American line-up is the Mustang, everything else is an SUV, a cross-over or a pickup truck. The Crown Vic is long gone as is the Taurus. The Lincoln range is all SUVs now. The F150 is the moneymaker in the Ford North America line-up anyways.

EV’s – Earth raping slave vehicles.
Speaking of electric cars …
https://apnews.com/article/newark-cargo-ship-fire-firefighters-dead-4154778131e5cd3833fadddc2088c400
The car fire onboard the cargo ship that killed two firefighters … is STILL BURNING 3-days later. STILL BURNING! I’ll give you three guesses …
1. It was a female car.
Article says no EVs were aboard the ship.
Don’t know if that is true.
I would bet on the article leaving that out. But you might want to look into the Felicity Ace about a year ago.
