The City of Saskatoon is facing a $52-million shortfall as it begins its budget process for next year.
That revenue gap is “probably close to double” the amount that city administrators have faced in the past when starting the budget process, chief financial officer Clae Hack said at a media briefing on Wednesday.
If there are no cuts to services or future growth plans, city residents would face a property tax increase of 18.56 per cent next year and 6.95 per cent the year after, the city said. But the multi-year budget process for 2024 and 2025, which is starting this month and will wrap up in November, will be focused on lowering that number.
Hack stressed the city isn’t recommending a property tax rate at this point, just offering a “fully transparent view” of what administrators and city council will be wrestling with.

But you’re their enemy. Their approach is “there are still more taxpayers. Raise rates until we achieve equality!”
Pardon me, “… until we achieve equity.” They have no use for equality, an idea that shows their approach to be utter bullcrap.
Maybe cut out the aspirational stuff and get back to the basics – roads, sewers, parks – all that boring stuff. Ditch the climate claptrap and the monumentalism and focus on what you are paid to do.
Vancouver in Sask, Green haven. Bike lanes, social justice, Climate plans, all the latte crew buzz works, causes.
Eventually you run out of other people’s money. Clark is a loon, sadly, when spending others money, it JUST DOES NOT hurt “you” , as an elected advocate.
Until IT DOES. Electorate has to get engaged, enough, be accountable, deliver services you must as a municipal entity. Other stuff, PFOD, you fund it, cause your neighbor should not have to fund your philosophical dreams.
Till then, mega DREAM PROJECTS, arenas, big buildings, drag queen venues aka libraries etal, all with limited to no economic or citizen benefit.
Yeesh, this crew has to go, like most woke city govs, simply NO CLUE. Dreamers and Green mantra folks. Really, like -40, blizzard, etc, bike lanes are the answer?

City Councils look around at the provincial and federal gov’t, and see no problem with spending as they do.
The repercussions are zero, and those who donate to the elected officials enjoy bike lanes, and public art.

Driven in Calgary lately? the roads are garbage. We were given notices to not park on the street as street cleaning would be done (about 3-4 weeks ago). No cleaning was done in any of the neighborhood where I live. This is the smallest example I can give. The larger issues, are much more money. Security on public transit has become a joke. City council has instead passed laws making it illegal to tell someone they’re an idiot, when clearly they are an idiot.
We’re not Portland, San Fransisco or Vancouver yet. But we’ll get there…
They did sweep in my neighbourhood Marc. But the 40km/hr unless otherwise posted isn’t needed, because the roads don’t have the correct beds and are up-down swales now 10 years after paving, so God bless you if you try to do 40 outside of the main routes in my neighbourhood.

So far June has been quite cool. 11 c or lower most mornings where I am. Golf has been hit and miss through April and May. Sitting in the sun was relegated to about 5 or 6 days through April and May and we still do not have our pool open. Global warming, B S .
Just be glad you don’t live in Calgary, where Mayor Jyoti Gondek declared a Climate Emergency on her first day in office and wants to spend $87 Billion on Climate Mitigation.

There is no city politician alive today that doesn’t have aspirations of advancing to the provincial or federal level. That’s where the real grifting opportunities lay.
We’ve got bike lanes all over my city, the only thing we don’t have is anybody using them. Hmmm, maybe because most of the time it is cold, and then foggy and raining when not so cold. It would have been cheaper to buy the cyclists cars, much cheaper.
There must be some sane people in control somewhere?

Regina is no better. Read the report from Renewable Regina and the Catatayst Committee and your head will spin from the amount of money city council is prepared to spend for their vanity projects. No way to get the money other than raise property taxes or beg money from the feds. Meanwhile our infrastructure is falling down around us. The city cant even keep the lights on on the Ring Road.
Have they started claiming their intentions to increase taxes in a quest to make the city more “affordable”
