    1. This tipping thing has got way out of control. I rarely eat out, but when I do, I tip based on quality of service. It is wise to tip the folks who handle your food or next time in you may be eating some saliva.

Gas … Groceries etc. ….I do not tip anyone one else for anything. Why should I. I worked for about 50 years and never once got a tip, nor did I ever expect one. I worked and I got paid. It’s simple.

TIP which means ‘To Insure Promptness’ was something that was given to the maître de (head waiter) who then would instruct the staff that you must receive quality, prompt service.

It’s sort of like a bribe …. similar to what the Chinese give to Justin Trudeau to insure obedience ….

      1. Too bad you didn’t work for the Canadian Govt. … then you could go on strike … get a huge pay raise … and a BONUS too!! Just for doing the job you contracted to do.

  1. With some of the most unbelievably high prices for food at some supermarkets, I think that the cashiers at the checkout should point a gun at you when you are handing over your cash.

    1. Exactly. I try to pay in cash so that they don’t slap on a sneaky tip to my credit card bill that I did not approve. Has happened to me in Australia a couple of times. As for not tipping, I simply remind myself that the wait staff are getting over $AUD30 per hour on a weekend.

      1. I don’t mind tipping a waitress. Usually I leave 15% on the restaurant bill. Same goes for pizza delivery drivers. But at checkout? WTF? Should I leave a tip when I fill up my gas tank too?

        1. Walmart has now got in on the act and wants you to donate , pops up first thing when you pay at the self checkout and they ask if you want a credit card too.
They just added another feature were they want to send your receipt to your phone, email or a paper print out.
The slippery slope keeps getting steeper.

          1. I’d imagine Wallymart gets tens of millions in tax breaks for donations made by consumers a dollar or two at a time with these micro transactions.

It should be illegal for a big corporation to prompt for a tip while you perform the work of a replaced employee.

  2. I don’t believe there is an organized plan or agenda here (I could be wrong) but I fear that the justified revulsion at this practice might lead to the eventual eliminating of tipping – which one finds in Europe (to the delight of their unionzed service sector who have jacked up the cost of obtaining service) – and which then eliminates any incentive for anyone in a customer-facing role to give you better service. Customer service in this country is bad enough. Am I onto something here?

    1. I would prefer that this revolting practice lead to the elimination of self-serve checkouts. As if!

    1. Yeah, Garth. At the end of a long day, just like us, the robots go home, prop their wheels up, and pop the top on a quart of oil.

  3. I don’t feel angry or guilty when I don’t tip for self service. I think everyone knows why you shouldn’t feel obligated to tip. If someone gets obnoxious about it then that’s their problem.

I rarely do percent tipping anymore. I just give a fixed amount based on the number of people, $2.50 to $4.00 per person at the table, depending on the type of meal and level of service. Tipping based on a continually increasing percent is getting ridiculous.

    1. i usually tip the girls at my coffee shop 15%…I mean c’mon, they have to put up with me for starters… On that note, twice now at the same bakery coffee shop, I’ve placed large orders of baked goods, and had a coffee and muffin while i waited for my order. When I went to pay ( an $80 order) without thinking and out of habit I hit the 15% tip key… the girls REALLY love me there!

  4. If the merchant had a few more brains he’d program the screen to ask the customers if they wished to donate to a charity. At least he’d be able to make an annual donation and claim the income tax benefit. That’s what happens when all these businesses get their clerks to ask: “Would you like to donate two dollars to ______________ sir?”

It would suck a lot of people in… as it does now.

    1. I always ask the poor clerk..”Do people really donate to this stuff?” they usually say” some do”

    2. Already happening. Walmart’s mandatory self check outs ask for a buck to feed the hungry.

      1. Food Banks Canada (walmart’s partner) already gets $35+ million from the federal government, before they pass it and other revenue along to other organizations

      2. “Walmart’s mandatory self check outs ask for a buck to feed the hungry.”

I never use those. If there are no cashiers available, I leave the entire shopping cart at the till and walk out. No one is paying me or offering a discount to scan and bag my own items.

    3. The fun one is to ask them if they provide a charitable receipt for the donation

      1. Yup. That’s my reply: “Sure, if I get the receipt instead of your company. “

    4. When I check out at Tractor Supply Company, the cashier asks if I’d like to “round up” to the nearest dollar with the pennies going to the 4H organization. Sometimes I do.

  5. I landed in South Korea and a friendly dude told me there was no tipping in the country.

I worked at a casino for a while, most of my earnings were tips and I tip well. But I got used to no tipping very fast.

    1. Oh, and Soju.
19% alcohol. I beer bottle was about 3 bucks.
      You were good after 2.

  6. I’ve officially hardened my heart. Unless you served me a meal at a table or delivered one to my house, I will not be tipping anyone. Also, I will not be “rounding up” for charity nor adding a dollar to my groceries for the hungry. I will not be dropping my change in the Ronald McDonald house basket either. My priest will be a little poorer too.

    1. I will always remember that Ronald McDonald house considered the unjabbed niggers.

      I remember.

      1. True that, Sock boy said mandatory and McDonalds got on their knees behind the pressitutes to fellate that effeminate, stupid, tiny man.

  7. I believe the Carbon Tax should be optional and variable, let the folks who believe it will save the world pay as much as they want.
    Same goes for the CBC!

  8. I told the babe at my local No Frills who suggested the self checkout that I don’t work there however I would consider using it if they gave me 5% off the total for doing all the work – She laughed and agreed with me –

    1. I always go to the manned checkouts. I figure the clerk needs the job, and their employer doesn’t need an excuse to replace them.

  9. Computer hacker tip:

If they let you enter an actual value (as opposed to a preset button amount) enter a minus sign first.

    I tip you -$10

  10. I’m always happy to give a good tip. “Buy low. Sell high.”

    Best tip they’ll ever get.

    1. Well, that’s one way to make sure all your food tastes the same – like shiiiiit

      1. Too late. I’m already outta there, Charles ;o)

But yeah, that is a ‘single use’ tip.

  11. They lay off half their employees then expect someone else to give them a raise.

  12. I live in Florida, one of the many (US) states that have a subminimum wage for tipped workers (usually waiters or delivery people). I generally tip at an 18-20% rate for good service, and up to 25% for exceptional service. The subminimum wage here in Florida is currently $7.98/hour, and the minimum wage is $11.00/hour.

When I lived in Washington (state), which does not have a subminimum wage, I usually tipped at 10%. I had someone (not the waiter, and not in the restaurant) question me about my low tips. I pointed out that if the server made more then 75 cents/hour in tips, they made more money than I did. The questioner (who was from another subminimum wage state, and didn’t know about Washington’s wage laws) never questioned me again. The current minimum wage in Washington is $15.74/hour, the highest in the nation. (Yes, even higher than California, New York, and New Jersey.)

  13. If they really want to do this, all employees should be required a large badge that displays their hourly rate.
