I always get a kick out of it when dull, Millennial hacks decide to try to insert color into their articles – as if they were writing an 1980’s style essay for Rolling Stone magazine: “In this case the oppressive force they aimed to thwart was the county government they now ran. It was early January, their first day in charge. An American flag held down a spot at the front of the board’s windowless meeting room. Sea-foam green carpet covered the floor.”
It reads like a parody of magazine writing, and it shows how hopelessly leaden , labored, and unimaginative their writing actually is. It shows how fundamentally clumsy and threadbare their propaganda is. It’s also revealing as to how much of their world view is based on class: “The county office is in a tacky little room, see? That’s because they’re tacky, uneducated people who aren’t smart, and who think bad thoughts. Get it? They bought a sea-foam green carpet. What a bunch of rubes!”
They didn’t learn to write.

Surber is absolutely right about firing the forty-year lawyer. I can imagine the favoritism and corruption that stemmed from that relationship. Undoubtedly the same situation with the city manager, a position that MUST be held in check by term limits.
Democracy is a theory, we don’t have that system and I can’t think of any country that does, but it does exist in some cities and counties.This one, Ottawa County, exercised their democratic rights by changing the players,and there’s nothing a comfortable bureaucracy hates more than having the wrong color, (in this case Republican red) join their exclusive and comfortable little club.
Btw, it isn’t just the Left that exercises this type of control at the local level. I lived in a town with a good conservative mayor, who hired his good buddy to be city manager. The new CM was paid about 60 % more than the same position in cities twenty times the size of that town.
Power corrupts, eventually everyone succumbs. Democracy will only work with term limits at every level, from town councillors to the Prime Minister.
Term limits for government employees as well, it doesn’t matter if you change the management if the worker bees continually get in the way… outside of the military, 20 years is more than enough (your military service still counts as against the 20 year limit, it just won’t take effect until you retire).
Of course I’m also one of those people that think “charities” and “not-for-profits” should be taxed, especially if they “invest” and get revenue out of it.
