  1. Food inflation has hit hard. My guess is that people are buying more carefully so there is less waste to toss out and also buying cheaper foods. People who used to buy the name brands have no doubt switched to the less expensive house brands.

    Those impulse purchases of “Ooooh, that looks yummy!” [grab] are probably way down, too.

    A 5% drop isn’t a drop off the cliff, but 5% shows people are watching their food budget a lot more closely.

    1. I only have stats from my own shoplifting at grocery stores. I’ve saved enough to buy an extra large Canada Goose parka with more pockets. And topped up my RRSP’s. .

    My questions are what is included in the definition of retail food sales? Does it include food sales at restaurants too?
    Could the changes be people eating less from restaurants, and eating more home prepared meals?
    How are sales of junk food like Frito Lay doing? Up, down, the same?
    Those everything delivered in a box for your deluxe Chef Dinner subscriptions?
    Steaks vs. Ground beef? Beef vs. Chicken and Turkey?

    There’s something happening here.

  4. That’s what happens when you MAiD tens of thousands of your countrymen. Throw in a bunch of jab deaths, et voila!

  5. Our food cost/day is down $2 from last year. Eating less beef/bison, more fish. A meal out/takeout is rare.
    Cat food looks expensive!

      Most of the prepackaged fish is coming from China.

      Wonder what the stats on fishing licence issued are, over the past couple years..

          1. Home made pyrogies are the best, but its hard to find the dry cottage cheese.. Fresh dill from the garden…
            Also don’t forget Mundare Garlic Sausage, Stawnichi’s, if you can afford it!
