    If we had listened to our friends at the nonpartisan CRTC, then Faux Noise would NOT have been allowed in this country.
    Unfortunately the Canadian Right went nuts and started spewing hate. Under relentless attack by the Canadian alt-right, the CRTC backed down and allowed h8 on our airwaves.

      I haven’t followed the cbc in decades. Have no interest in their opinions whatsoever. My contention is if you find Faux or cbc entertaining you should pay for them. Not in the Canadian way where they appear on your cable package whether you want them or not.

  13. The River Plate battle was something the Royal Navy very nearly TOTALLY farced up.

    The core problem was that being so early in the war all the tactics were based on pre-war theory. They used models (gee… where have we heard THAT word recently with things that were later proven wrong…? ) that predicted that the RN light cruisers would achieve ‘x’ hits over ‘y’ period and that this would be enough to overwhelm the German warship.

    (One of the light cruisers was New Zealand, but shorthand, okay? 😀 )

    Which would have actually been fire if they were actually scoring hits during the battle…

    Except the theory was wrong and the ranging tactics used by the two RN light cruisers simply didn’t work and the vast majority of their shells fired totally missed. The Allied ships were actually very lucky to avoid being isolated and destroyed one at a time by the Graf Spee and it only really became a great victory in the re-telling where the British propaganda talked up the ‘massive’ power of the German cruiser to justify why the battle had taken that long.

    The other interesting thing was the single most damaging hit taken by the Graf Spee was an 8inch hit that destroyed the German ship’s bakery. In normal situations? Yeah, no big deal. In the context of still having to sail all the way back to Europe with no support? Yeah, we can’t feed our crew anymore. If we break out and run for home we are screwed.

      Yes, which is why your accounting of the battle is tendentious (to put it mildly).

      Starting with calling Graf Spee a cruiser, thus implying some perceived at the time equivalence, between her and Royal Navy cruisers. Simple fact is that a Panzerschiff with 15K displacement, six 11-inch guns and eight 6-inch guns fought a running battle against a Royal Navy team B. RN had Exeter, one of the two smallest 8.3K tons 8-inch cruisers of Royal Navy (with six guns as opposed to eight guns as on all other 8 inch cruisers sans York), and two colonial protection light cruisers of the Leander class (7.2K with eight 6-inch guns). For a price of a mauled Exeter and some damage to one of the Leanders, Graf Spee was battle dead, and nearly out of ammo. Had RN used her usual mix of County and Town Class 10K cruisers, Graf Spee would have probably not make it to Uruguay.

      Oh and Graf Spee was hit about 70 times, gunnery on both sides was good.
      It was 6-inch fire that destroyed GF’s desalinization plant, thus making any journey back to Germany impossible without refit.

      And for WWII, Germans haven’t built a good balanced warship design larger than a small destroyer. Panzerschiff was a bad idea and a flawed concept in general. Bad idea because Royal Navy not only had Hood, Repulse and Renown that would have caught up with and blown Panzerschiff out of water without breaking a sweat, but because there were always going to be enough treaty County and Town class cruisers to do so even before battlecruisers arrived. Classic cruiser warfare had no future, it failed early in WWI, and the same was bound to happen in WWII.

        No, the only way it will end is when orcs are crippled and they are unable to wage war on their betters. Any ceasefire would only give time for rocs to regroup. There is no peace with orcs. Russia needs to be eliminated as an entity. Collapsed, broken down, civil wared, with breakaway regions cleansing themselves of ethnic russians. Russians around the world need to be put in camps if they show any signs of loyalty to russian imperialism. Those that resist need to be made an example off, publicly and decisively.
