Campaigners are pressuring the Government to implement plans to ban wood burning stoves from British households after serious health and environmental problems were linked to the appliances. Despite smoke control areas and limits on what can be burnt, wood burning is still an enormous emitter.

New wood burning stoves have had to meet emissions targets Since 2022, which mean they burn cleaner and are labelled Ecodesign. The fuel which can be used in devices is also strictly regulated, with wood only containing 20 percent moisture and under, certified by Woodsure and HETAS, allowed to be burnt.

However, pressure groups and scientific papers have shone new light on just how bad the problem still is. Ecodesign models can emit a staggering 750 times more tiny particle pollution than a modern HGV truck, the European Environmental Bureau says.

  2. Surprise surprise … Net Zero causes increased pollution in London !

    The reason for the sudden attack on wood stoves is due to the lunatics pushing Net Zero , which has caused huge price increases and reduced supply of natural gas and electricity , with the result people have been burning wood to stay warm.

    These eco-lunatics seem to expect people to simply freeze in winter .. well that actually may be the plan .. rather than resorting to burning whatever is necessary to stay warm.

  4. I was out in the woodlot last week, cutting down some trees for seasoning. Nothing is going to come between me and my fireplace.

    1. Will you be getting your firewood certified before burning like is required in the UK?
      Just keeping up with fallen trees and trimming back fence rows keeps me 2 years ahead in firewood. Burning it for heat is part of my heritage in my home and native land.

    2. You’ll just have to beg gov’t permission and get an ATB (Authorization To Burn) permit for a couple hundred bucks, and only buy from authorized dealers. A full background check, as well. If it saves just one asthmatic kid in Toronto, it’ll be worth it, right OJ?

    I absolutely love that this campaign against wood is coming in the middle of a war in Europe, in winter, when there’s no heating fuel, and the amazingly expensive electricity is intermittent. Genius!

  11. I have lived in small towns where everyone had wood stoves and heaters and used them. There were times when you could barely breath. The statist’s war on clean energy (NG) is resulting in the increase in dirty energy which is tolerable when widely dispersed but people prefer warmth and comfort to cold and deprivation. The road to serfdom, where the serfs will be forced to raid the Crown’s forest for fuel and poach it’s game for meat is almost complete. And this Crown’s government would rather you freeze in the dark.

  18. I completely quit recycling and don’t GAF what I burn in my fire pit, including any used oil I can’t repurpose. I came to the realization several years ago that giving in to these people just leads them making bigger and more absurd demands.

      I also suspect that a lot of the smoke is bad due to the fabric attached to the furniture they are burning to stay warm.
      The Eco loons just make the problems worse, and then demand even further rules and restrictions to compensate for it.

  21. Been doing construction since the Nixon administration. Buildings are so tight now, that codes make us install by them selves air exhaust systems that auto come on every 10 minutes.
    Because of cancer glues, natural wood turpentine, human/pet CO and gas.
    They’re tight because of energy codes, mandated. So you get indoor pollution. Which require new, more codes.

    Energy code—-> pushes indoor air codes—->pushes up costs—–> more taxes for “affordable” houses—->….

    We’re deep in created problems from the previous “solutions”( unwanted and forced ).

    At least Catch 22 didn’t generate new problems. We are in Catch 23 where we chase solutions to problems caused by solutions.

    At least government office slugs benefit. So we have that.

    1. Ten years ago we got a new furnace & hot water heater installed. They had to run a fresh air duct from the outside to feed the furnace. I mentioned that I thought it was stupid, heating up -40° outside air in the furnace when we could be warming up 68° inside air.

      Was told, “code”. Yet the furnace getting replaced operated just fine using interior air. It’s not like our home is anywhere near airtight.

      Idiots.

  22. What did they expect? Take away our access to cheap, clean, plentiful sources of energy in the name of some eco-loon cult, and we’ll go to the next energy source that helps us the most. Which does NOT mean very expensive “renewable” forms of energy. Those don’t help US. They help the loons feel good and upright and virtuous.

    I wonder if we could just burn the loons for heat?

CO2 and water come to mind.. You cant put rainwater down the drain anymore because some WONK has decided that rainwater needs to remain where it falls.. Even though the land is used up by your home.. The real reason being they cant afford to maintain the sewer network anymore..

    Hear hear no more water down the drain.. Leaky basements for all of you?..

    It all boils down to a million laws and bylaws with no money or ability to enforce them with out being racist.. I smell smoke.. Lets call in a dog team to find those illegal BBQers.. Who is going to pay for this?.. Nobody that’s who..

  26. Lets conserve water when we live next to a great lake.. They like to say we are using it but really we are just renting it for a short time..
    No reason exists for water conservation for any community within a few miles of the great lakes..

    But when they cook up the California suffering we are living in a dust bowl.. Low flow everything because we are all in this together, except we are not..

    Travel to a third world country and marvel at their showers.. They are not tuned to be just good enough.. They are 4x better than ours..
    In and out in two minutes, awesome.. Here it takes ten minutes.. Same same water wise with some California suffering thrown in..

  31. I still remember the good ol days (when I was 10 years old) and helped my grandfather clean the terraced creek bank in the rear yard of his beautiful suburban home. Every Fall we would rake up all the cuttings and scrub that we cleared back … and *gasp* … would rake into a pile … and SET IT ON FIRE!!! OMG! We burned all the clippings right there on the creek bank in a small clearing.

    But a funny thing … we never set the creek and surrounding hills on fire. Never burned ourselves. Never torched his house or his neighbors homes. He wasn’t stupid or dull witted, and practiced fire safety. He taught me fire safety. We never burned when it was windy. Never set a fire too large to control. You know, used common human sense. And he also burned household trash in a small, off the shelf, trash-can sized, incinerator (they used to actually make those for backyard burning). Again, never with a bad incident.

    This was in the mid 1960’s … and by the 1980’s all outdoor fires were banned by our County. Why? Simple answer: stupid people. It seems a few fires got out of control. And … the eco-whiners had enough control in the 1980’s (hey … it’s California) that the “toxic smoke” simply had to be banned. BTW … this is suburbia … and not very many people actually had yard fires. So, it wasn’t really any kind of a serious problem. But “controllers” gotta control.
