  1. That’s a parking meter, yes? I consider this progress. Chances are, the virtue signaling apparatus won’t work half the time due to their previous solar success rate. Therefore, free parking.

There’s gotta be a way to apply “alternative energy” to income taxes. Hopefully, they will try that next.

  2. The city of Calgary planners/engineers are none too bright. There are quite a number of bus shelters, with an entryway (no door) on one end and a doorway on the other end. To make this three sided structure “handicap accessible”, they installed powered handicap door openers on the door.

  3. The meter will still work. Artificial lights such as incandescent fluorescent bulbs can be used to charge solar cells, provided the light is strong enough. It is probably more reliable than the ones outdoors. The city, Joti especially, will claim they have 100% solar powered parking meters.
So again, pay no attention to the diesel generator behind the curtain. Another example of hydrocarbons subsidizing renewable energy.

    1. Joti Gondek.

About as DIM a Flippin Soros backed socialist “light bulb” as can be…

How that beotch “legally” won is simply by me. Had never heard of the Plut in my 46 yrs of living in Calgary.

      1. Steakman – “Local” media, Global, CTV, CBC promoted Jyoti hard during the election due to her alignment with Seattle and Portland policing philosophies. Isn’t that a great vision for a city? Fortunately, the rest of council realized early on, after she negotiated with Murray Edwards, that she needed to be kept on a shorter leash. Her record approval rating speaks volumes (35% approve, 55% fully disapprove):

  4. Over on the Twitters, Calgary Parking said that it was left over from a surface lot reno so, since they already had it, they used it in the underground lot. If true, I applaud the fiscal prudence.

But since Calgary is in a OMG! we’re all gonna die unless we fork over $87B climate emergency, I have my doubts. If the City is stupid enough to believe that, its also stupid enough to believe that a solar-powered parking meter will work underground.

  5. I’m sure the solar feature is incorporated into all Park’n’Pay machines during the manufacturing process and I’m also sure Calgary PA bought hundreds of them given that most would be outside.
Think of it as a never used option on your car, ridiculous but it’s there anyways. I’m stickin’ up for you CPA…don’t make me regret it.
Surprised they didn’t cover it with a portrait of the mayor.

    1. You’d think the solar panels would be removable so they could replace solar panels that were broken on other units.

  6. will the new electric busses be forced to pay parking to balance the books. peter paying paul in a full scale pass the buck .

  7. Why not? At least the solar panel doesn’t get covered in snow there.
You don’t have to pay some unionized city worker goon to sweep the snow off of it.

  8. It’s all for show

Rand Paul correctly called out “mask theatre” as a useless construct of the medical Deep State. Who will call out “Global Warmist theatre”? Cause it’s EVERYWHERE.

  9. Don’t mention the Enmax electric utility 400MW natural gas turbine power plant in the city SE.
Gotta power up all the LED street lights, traffic signals, and 1/2 the city.

    1. The location that Duke Energy was going to set up. Then Enmax paid stooges protested until Duke gave it up.

  10. I have a Sharp solar cell COMPET CS-1125 desk calculator since about 1984. It still works. Now that I don’t do more complex calcs it’s my go-to calculator.

  11. Sometime between 5 and 3000 years from now, Calgary will likely be once again buried by ice for the next hundred thousand years and the morons that live there vote for a looney-tune sociopath that declares a global warming emergency. They’ll probably vote for a return to green theocracy provincially too. The media is working tirelessly for Rachel Notley, smearing Smith every day.

    1. And somehow the First Nations will be hunting, fishing, and picking berries under the ice. Just like their ancestors did!

  12. Calgary likes a progressive mare. I think you’d have to go back to Rod Sykes to find a conservative. Calgarians typically re-elect their mare.

Jyoti Gondek has a Ph.D in Urban Sociology. Yeah, I’ve never heard of such a thing either. Her first act was to declare a climate emergency. She then got in a pissing match with the Calgary Flames (something about including solar panels to the structure) which resulted in cancellation of a new arena deal.

Don’t be surprised that installing solar panels to underground parking meters didn’t come directly from her office…

  13. Reminds me of the Spanish solar farm that generated revenue 24/7 by installing floodlights powered by diesel fueled generators.

  14. I first saw one of these installed on 50th Ave SW near Elbow Dr in Calgary. It was oriented appropriately, to the south, presumably to catch maximum rays. Only problem, it was about 5 feet from a building face, rising 5 storeys. Brilliant!

  15. Let me add that at my workplace, a new building with all the progressive trimmings, architects and engineers apparently agreed that installing a fancy Dyson hand drying device directly under the paper towel dispenser was a great innovation! I leave it to your immagination.
