  1. Great album. Not working for the Clamp down! Our band, The Allies (as in the good guys in WW2) did a killer version of London Calling and Clampdown among others.
Ah, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now!

  2. Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust. Only for those who weren’t yet born in 1966 when genius songs like this came out of nowhere …

A little phony Beatlemania for your enjoyment. The George Harrison fills and lead are a delight to the ear. And BTW … now Prince Harry’s bird is singing … and curtsying with all the sneering derision of The Clash.

Yes, London Calling is inspired genius too. Making Punk accessible to the masses.

    1. Maybe a little to good to be a punk band. Heck, they could all actually play! I always found it funny that Joe Strummer thought Mick Jones wasn’t a good socialist and fired him for wanting to be a rock star. Good times!

  3. Liked the album when it came out but I was already 27 by then. I can still listen to the title track, Train In Vain, The card Cheat and maybe Death or Glory but most of it sounds like a lot of cockney dogrel to me now.

  4. Stop and think what else was popular in 1979.

Such a brilliant album. Everything came together on it. Hard to pick what’s best without overlooking the rest, but strummers vocals are so raw and yet so textured. Pretty tough to stand out as a vocalist in front of that sound- and make it so much better.

Often find myself playing this or Chicago’s hits of the 70s (kath era). Never gets old for me and hear so much more now than when released.

  5. Bought the LP in 1993 when the music store was changing over from LPs and cassettes to CDs for 99 cents in the bargain bin . I did not own an LP player at the time and still do not own one. Still in the original shrink wrap.

  6. I always thought Guns of Brixton could be a good song for second amendment supporters, but all parties concerned would get kind of angry at the thought of it. Major cultural gap.

  7. Put in perspective, we are as far from this album as this album was from 1936, when there were no albums, and the number one seller in the US was Pennies from Heaven, by Bing Crosby.

I have the double LP and will play it today!

  8. September 1991, the Pogues had kicked out Shane.
Pogues performing in a circus tent in the middle of Exhibition grounds, with Joe Strummer fronting. When they did London Calling, unbelievable, awesome.

Weirdly, the Rainbow Warriors were the opening act. Remember the song My Definition? Sampled the theme from the tv show.
