You can’t get a better demonstration of that than to look at how the rail blockades were handled compared to the Convoy protest. Burning cop cars? This, folks, is what the CPC calls “Standing Up For Hunters”. No wonder we’re seeing our guns declared prohibited. I recall Harper promising, in speech and in writing, that his party would re-write the Firearms Act. They didn’t. They never even tried. I’ll give him credit for half-assedly “ending the Long Gun Registry”, but his party could have fixed the utter mess that is the FA and it’s related CCC provisions. They chose to keep gun owners as political footballs.
I wrote letters to my MP, to various Ministers, to Harper himself. I joined a gun rights organization. I volunteered to sell memberships at gun shows, and have done for well over a decade. I even took the BC CFO to court with a Section 74 challenge to changes to my Authorization To Transport. I maintained a CPC membership for 6 years, talked the party up to all and sundry, gave the CPC donations I couldn’t really afford…
And here I am, years later, and nothing has changed, except that I now have 3 rifles (one is a .22 for God’s sake) that have been declared illegal, and 5 handguns that I cannot sell, or gift, or pass on to my kids. All told, I’m looking at about $5000 in firearms and God knows how much in ammunition and related accessories, now essentially worthless AND a possible criminal threat if I defy gov’t and refuse to hand them in. And no, I do not want “compensation”. I want to be left alone. I want the harassment to STOP.
All I hear from the politicians is about hunters and farmers. I’m a sport shooter. Where’s my support? Who stands up for me? No, I’m not at all impressed with the so-called “Conservative” party, and their Question Period theatre.
If they want my vote, they will commit to a full re-write of the FA, with input from the 3 major gun rights orgs, within the first year of majority, with no excuses. I want every one of my guns declared fully legal for use, and I want the legal right to carry a concealed firearm. That exists in the current system, except that it is never approved. Essentially, you have to survive 4 attempts on your life, AND be able to document that, before some bureaucrat decides if you’re worthy of the permit. That’s not acceptable. I am not expendable!

Weyland, I too, am a sport shooter, not a hunter. I’m an avid handgunner, and used to shoot IPSC when I was younger. I stand to lose something like $50,000 in firearms and related components. Yeah, I too want to be able to legally carry concealed as well. I fully agree with everything in your post.

There are an awful lot of mag fed semi rifles that were non restricted before, and don’t have much if any, of a paper trail. A lot of them have changed hands a bunch as well. GerryK, concur with what you said. What is an “assault style weapon”? In my opinion any weapon is an assault style weapon from a rock, to a knife, to a sling shot, to a cross bow to a single shot to allowed 5 round semi-auto rifle or to a shot gun. It’s all word salad.

Does anyone out there think more and more about moving to the US? I’m seriously considering it. While I still have some earning years left, I think it would make sense. Have looked into it and would be nice but premier Smith does give some hope for those living in AB. Consider moving here if not the US. Weather is better in most of the US but southern AB can be not bad in the winter. Property taxes are not bad in most of Alberta. Health care would be better in the US. Premier Smith will get rid of the rcmp before a gun grab. Every yard in this neighborhood will have at least one gun on it. Even one of the county council members here used his gun to foil theft of his pickup. Made for quite a story. That can be a bit of a problem as I am not far from deadmonton but I have not had any theft at my place.
