Humans mined 700 million tons of copper over the last 5,000 years.
The same 700 million tons will need to be mined over the next 22 years to meet energy transition targets using wind, solar, & electric vehicles.

Hold on to your scrap copper and various metals, sell them to the metal recyclers , it’s money in the bank.
Hell, hold on to your bicycle!
So many comments on the Twitter post are absolutely fine with raping the Earth, much of it done with slave labour.
It gets better. It is not just copper, but everything else. For example, the EU Critical Minerals List includes light rare earths, heavy rare earths, germanium, phosphorus, niobium, magnesium, borate, strontium, scandium, cobalt, beryllium, bauxite, graphite, bismuth, antimony, vanadium, lithium, hafnium, gallium, barite, tantalum, and titanium. Also metallurgical coal. I’ve overweighted my TFSA with nickel, lithium, and tin/silver in the expectation that the world’s drive to electrify everything will generate good portfolio returns.
You forgot one…iron. Else there’s not much use for that metallurgical coal. And Vale’s dividend is outstanding.
Alert William Devine!
Jeez, I read that and heard his voice!
Don’t you hate spellcheck? Devane, of course.
The interesting thing is the next 700 million tonnes likely take 100 times the energy and effort to extract as the first 700 million tonnes. Much of the copper extracted so far was in mountain sized chunks from high into the air to deep in the ground. Those deposits are all gone.
You’re right. The easy stuff has been harvested.
Not to worry
Nobody will be worried about green economy when they are harvesting door jambs for heating. Basic hierarchy of needs stuff.
Bankrupt governments won’t be subsidizing anything let alone the brave new world of impractical technologies
Scar
My youngest sister is #1 Shovel.operator at Highmont Valley Copper near Logan Lake. BC, every hour a tandem truck train leaves filled with copper concentrate.
They still have a few decades worth, from what I’m told..
And 5,000 mines just like it are needed to produce the necessary cars and supporting infrastructure. That’s a lot.
I know it…you know it…they know it. Oft touted “genius “Elon Musk most assuredly has done the math to know what goes into making even one of his batteries and we haven’t even touched upon the disposal end of things. So why is there next to zero pushback on this?
You’re high if you think their end game is to replace every internal combustion engine with an EV.
Three people I’d like to see on one show: Rogan, Musk and this guy.

Everyone will not be driving EVs. EVs are for the elite. The masses will take public transit.
The masses will subsidize the EVs for the elite.
And a lot of people will be shocked to learn they’re not in the elite.
Actually very few people will travel.
It will be restricted and rationed out according to your hierarchy in the hive.
You may be able to sneak out on foot but will probably be corralled and brought back.
Nobody without express written consent can leave the future plantations.
You will own nothing and be happy, not even shoes , it was told to me by some Blofeld character.
Pretty much it in a nutshell right there.
I am one of those humans mining copper. In the mine I work in we burn roughly 20000 L of diesel a day to recover 88 million pounds of copper per year. 24/7 If everything goes right. We also move hundreds of millions of tons of waste rock. Copper is not found in concentrated quantities in the rock. 0.5 % copper is average worldwide. That’s a lot of holes in the ground.
Wait until Komatsu starts delivering their new, battery-powered haul trucks. And I laughed, and I laughed, and I laughed. The stupidity of woke management is just comical.
Data I have seen to get to Net-Zero (supposedly by 2050!!!) for some of the minerals required:
Material/QTY needed tons/annual production tons 2019/Years to target @2019 rates of production.
Copper/4.5 billion tons/24.2 M tons/189 years
Nickel/940M tons/2.3M/400
Lithium/944.5M/95,170/9,920
Cobalt/218M/126,019/1,733
Graphite/8.9B/1.15M/3,287
Extreme example:
Germanium/4.16M/143/29,113
Conclusion: Net-Zero is a farce as all this mining would have to be done with diesel fuel and the environmental fallout from this huge increase in mining would be monumental. The retards are running the asylum. They have no idea what they are talking about and we are being taxed on this nonsense. We have aprox 11,000 days to 2050.
Politicians should not be designing energy systems.
BD, in the majority, politicians aren’t designing energy systems, they are destroying them.
Point!!
Bob…
But it’s not about Net Zero as they are propagandizing…..it’s humanity itself that’s being driven to said Net Zero.
Knock off 6.5 – 7 Billion humans..? and said Remaining resources will last centuries if not longer, those humans that are left will be little more than fully programmed automatons…devoid of feeling, emotions and anything else used to previously describe “humanity”
That’s these Fkrs pkan…full bore.
First stop digital $$ – Next, full control of your about to be, miserable remaining life.
Agreed, we are the carbon they want to get rid of.
Interesting.
The necessity to mine these enormous amounts of copper is highly correlated with the ability to finance the energy transition on a worldwide scale. Looking at the western nations, this is doubtful at best – the others will take it a bit slower. The conversion story is a bit overhyped. Things take time.
Copper mining operations … the high yield mines are largely gone, copper today mines work below 1%. Huge input of ressources & energy is needed to maintain output, (keeping the output of a mine that once had 1% and is now 0,5% doubles the throughput) … .
For expansion projects, lots of bureaucracy to get a new operation approved, redtape everywhere and “greedy local interest groups & governments” increasing risks, amongst other stuff: endless time-horizons are needed and very deep pockets. True for “the west”, but also developing Latin America – cheers from Chile.
EVs, solar panels and wind mills are all meant as bait and switch.
The powers that be are having us move away from fossil fuels. In the next few years they will admit all this mining is bad for the earth, and ban those options, as well.
They want us to die.
They are getting their wish, the population is starting to die off in droves in the West, unfortunately it is being replaced at a higher rate by subpar gimmegrants.
John
100% the “PLAN”
As it has been for decades. Had to bring in a few million to be able to learn English and develop a base of useless idiots, once done they decided to continue with endless wars and other things to thin us out…COVID scam a huge part in that.
Heh …. CeeBeeCee … Dot they even know what copper is.
Hell, do they know the power comes out of the wall?
Do they know about anything that did not come from the central committee of the department of ideology?
Stuff like this is how you can tell it’s a scam. They promise you a self-driving electric car, what you get is to be a pedestrian in home-made shoes, dodging the diesel-powered limousines of the super-rich. Upper middle-class get a bicycle.
Indonesia, essentially. But hey, its ‘sustainable.’
Sidewalks are the coming thing in public transit, no question. Oh, darn, those require the use of highly polluting concrete, so we’re just going to have to vaccinate the whole lot of you.
Now try opening a mine.
You can do any such calculation for just about any material required for power generation/ storage schemes and quickly realize that there isn’t enough readily accessible material available to meet the power projections to do a full scale conversion unless one accepts raping Mother Earth at great cost.
The likeliest outcome will be to restrict who gets access to the alternative energy (i. e. The elite). Rest assured that the numbers of recipients will be far fewer than today (i. e. severe population reduction) and the brunt of the effort will be burdened on undeveloped third world countries until their populations diminish and disappear.
Green energy advocates are essentially evil and racist.
Further to this see
https://stopthesethings.com/2022/11/17/dream-on-finite-mineral-resources-mean-grand-wind-solar-transition-must-inevitably-fail/
The paragraph stating that one should consider any battery powered or storage anything to be a potential disaster was thought provoking.
Most green energy advocates cannot do basic arithmetic, they are just useful idiots.
“The kind of man who wants the government to adopt and enforce his ideas is always the kind of man whose ideas are idiotic.”
― H.L. Mencken
h/t Tony Heller
It’s a lot but in fairness the amount of copper mined in the first 4900 years is Jack sh*t.
Pretty strong statement. Any facts you would like to provide to back it up?
The 100 years of motor transport are soon to end and we’ll be walking. They likely won’t allow horses because, remembering from my youth, they fart all day long. The only thing that might save us is the Ceaușescu solution. Vote them out – with prejudice. They want us dead.
“They want us dead.” – They’ve started with the Ukrainian people.
