Not so “cheap” anymore

It was only a matter of time until a government began instituting taxes on EVs to fund road upkeep and repairs. As data on the fire risk of EVs accumulates, expect the insurance industry to take notice as well.

Owners of most petrol and diesel cars pay £165 a year in road tax and continuing the VED exemption for the growing fleet of electric vehicles could cost the exchequer around £1bn a year by the middle of the decade.

Although the sums involved are not huge at this stage, the introduction of road tax on EVs is seen by Treasury insiders as evidence of a “direction of travel”, with more taxes likely to be levied on them in years to come.

  1. It should be MORE $$$ … like trucks pay … because the EVs are so much heavier than conventional cars. More wear and tear on our already shittily maintained roads.

  2. I continue to be amused by gov’t which views exemptions to higher taxes, as being a “cost” to them.

While 1000’s of underperforming pencil pushers, affirmative action hires, are given positions in which they’re tasked with nothing more than to gauge compliance of their meaningless dictates.

While if they weren’t hired by gov’t, would struggle to gain work at anything more challenging than “picking things up, and putting them down” in Amazon warehouses.

Those new to Canada, the additional 500k starting in a couple of years, the provincial authorities don’t just say to them, “ok you have x years experience as an electrician over there, so you can do that here too” …
There’s some school involved, there will be math.

  3. To the Sunak government’s credit this is pretty rational, but what’s really needed are road tolls and their subsequent privatization.

    1. unDork alla Lass
what is needed is much longer extension cords, to increase the range of these suckers!

    2. Road tolls?

Very little of the toll revenue will be spent on maintenance. Reference the existing gasoline and diesel taxes.

Privatize the roads will cure this? Perhaps, but you’ll have to pay for: the profit, the inspectors and bureaucrats who’ll regulate the privatized roads, and don’t forget executive salaries and bonuses.

And there will also be a shortage of materials. Road maintenance requires asphalt which is a hydrocarbon. Concrete requires large amounts of energy to manufacture cement. Gang green government policies will be reducing the supply of both.

    1. I don’t think enough of us will be corralled before figuring it out. The question is .. how do we turn it around. We seem to be corralled now … consider the last couple of years … not much public movement over that period … it is the mindless compliance that does us in.

  4. If you have an EV, your house insurance will go up due to the risk of your EV parked in the garage burning down the house.

    1. What makes me laugh out loud is that these EV snobs were gloating over not having to pay for gas and all the tax that is piled on to each liter.

I will watch the smiles melt away as they come to the realization that they have a invested in a dog with very low range, especially in winter.

I will watch the smiles melt away as the come to the realization that have invested in a dog that takes forever to line up and charge the battery.

I will watch the smiles melt away as they come to the realization that they have a invested in a dog that relies on electricity that is going up in price everyday while our ability to produce electricity diminishes everyday thanks to the green diarrhea …

I will watch the smiles melt away as they come to the realization that they have a invested in a dog whom the insurance companies will raise rates on and keep raising until the green washes away … somehow. Between spontaneous fires and auto pilot mishaps … and how much and where will repairs and service be available for these dogs …. Insurance companies will need a new set of probabilities.

I will watch the smiles melt away as they come to the realization that they have a invested in a dog whose battery will eventually need to be replaced at almost the cost of a new car.

Who will buy a used electric car?

Electric cars are a fad … a period to get through. Unless some magic way to produce power comes up, electric cars have a limited time on the planet. They are no more sustainable than gasoline powered vehicles.

      Cheers.

  5. I wish I was rich enough to be a pretentious douchebag.. I have to settle for being just a douchebag.. Such is life..

  6. God I wish people would think and also see the what’s coming. Why do you think Ford in Ontario got rid of license plate fees….he knows what the plan is. Every car built today has the technology to send data to government to charge milage fees. Ford just tipped his hand early. But most people don’t even understand. In the end the goal is stop movement. The people have had way to much movement freedom for the last 100 years.
