This is one of the most fascinating discussions I’ve come across in months. Lex Fridman interviews Michael Levin, a biologist working on novel ways to understand and control complex pattern formation in biological systems.

Not sure how brilliant he is. He said that a fertilized human egg is just a bag of chemicals. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
You need to listen to the whole thing.
Until you can take your bag of chemicals, shake it up and grow me a super model :).. Where does our consciousness come from?.. Magic?.. The more we look into the complex systems of life the more we see simple evolution alone didn’t do it.. Specific systems that require symbiosis with each other evolving separately.. How can you evolve into a task that doesn’t yet exist..
You can only win the lottery so many times in a row.. This includes the earth we live on.. Enter the multiverse to explain the ridiculous odds away.. Life failed a trillion trillion trillion times and we are lucky ones living in the dimension where it didn’t..
Or it could be God..
Yet another example of the “tornado in a scrapyard” fallacy.
Three hours, but just in the first minute it gets really interesting. Regarding the planaria, it is the case that
young children [under ten] can grow back the ends of their fingers if the cut part is not closed off.
So we’re related.

Refreshing, considering the gobbledygook proffered from our so-called scientific institutions today. An uncorrupted real biologist.
Excellent. Somebody with some understanding of dissipative structures in very far from equilibrium systems.
The fact that God wasn’t sadistic enough to say “Poof! Here is life! Here are dinosaurs! Now, here are humans!” is in now way evidence that He doesn’t exist, it is just evidence that the smarter you are, the better you can be at decoding God’s language, folk like Einstein, Planck, Sadi Carnot, Ludwig Boltzmann, Ilya Prigogine, etc.
Kate, I’m impressed.
Saying that there is no central, top-down command structure to life is a paradigm shift that many will find just as abhorrent as they found Darwin’s theory to be. Some humans need the idea to give their lives meaning, it seems, even in the face of evidence to the contrary. I guess they can’t handle the fact that God is much, much more smart and subtle than they are.
One could say that the entire universe was built over massive eons of time, just so that the perfect conditions for life on Earth could evovle to finally support humans .
The entire shebang brought about just for us.
One does have to wonder what our purpose is .
It is spelt out in the Book but still…
Pure egotism, the same kind that had Galileo persecuted, something that the New Testament has been trying to cure folk of for a long time, but nobody listens.
