September 29, 2022: Reader Tips

Tonight we continue on with our music countdown. Here is the 2nd most popular song in each of five decades:

Your best tips, musical or otherwise, are much appreciated!

Related: Just received this from SDA regular, Denise:

Your music countdown impressed upon me the impact of songs on youth. To this day I know the lyrics to most of your song selections in the ’60s (I was a child) and the ’70s (a teenager). I was familiar with some songs in the ’80s, but not so much in the ’90s and ’00s. [my husband] James wrote a song about an older guy who loves to “reminisce about those glory days before Elvis left the building, when Jerry Lee was still killing, Buddy Holly ruled the hit parade. Sam Records was rocking, Lord now you got me talking Rockabilly For The Middle-Aged.” If following your music countdown (two to go!) you’d be interested in a song inspired by the time warp that often shapes lifetime music preference, here’s Rockabilly for the Middle-Aged & the not so politically correct lyrics.

    1. HiHo – she’s a bit like Kate Bush or Nina Hagan from the 80s, talented, creative and edgy.
      Thanks for the tip.

    2. If Gimme Shelter was the second most listened to song of the 60s, what was #1? Surely more people listened to Satisfaction or Hey Jude, or even “Here Comes The Sun,ā€ one of George Harrison’s compositions on Abbey Road, the most-streamed Beatles song on Spotify globally, with more than 350 million streams.
I guess we’ll find out next time on, SDA Reader Tips!!

      1. To repeat, I simply pulled the songs off of assorted lists. Please complain to them and don’t blame me.

      2. Summer of ’69. Sitting on the DMZ. 1st Marine Division. Big Motha Psy Ops speakers aimed into North Vietnam. Played “Gimme Shelter” 10 times in a row at max amperage and volume. When the Captain made us quit, out of the silence and darkness to the north came the sounds of 4 or 5 people clapping. Up yours, Karl Marx.

    1. Pat, your postings have a quaint tinge of irrationality often. This however ‘takes the cake’. You have more faith than Billy Graham to think this true.

      1. I seriously can’t believe people still think progressive pat is genuine. “It” or xer/xim or whatever is comedy gold for sure because it’s satire.

          1. Political science

The same science that Justin uses to pick his socks.

The same science Dems use to say Joe Biden isn’t suffering from dementia.

      1. The Brits, warning us, warning themselves, but nobody listens.
…to the tune of starving millions, to make a better kind of gun…

  1. I’m sure someone will be along shortly with a bunch of reddit links to ensure we are all entertained.

  2. SDA gets results.
I commented yesterday Courage is Contagious……
    https://thecountersignal.com/like-alberta-saskatchewan-will-ignore-ottawas-request-to-confiscate-firearms/

Saskatchewan Chief Firearms Officer Bob Freberg revealed that the province wrote to the RCMP saying ā€œno provincially funded resources of any type,ā€ including the RCMP, will be used for federal Public Safety Minister Marco Medicino’s gun bans and buybacks.

Freberg made the comments on the radio program, the John Gormley Show.

    https://www.ckom.com/2022/09/28/sask-government-pulling-money-away-from-federal-gun-buyback/

Thank you Premier Moe and CFO Freberg for standing up to Ottawas petty tyrants.

    1. I hope you’re willing to open you heart and open your door and open your country to all the poor Slavs trying to flee Poooootin’s tyranny?

      1. Those fleeing from russia? Nah, they’ll fit better in Mongolia and Kazakhstan. They’re more Mongols than Slavs anyway. Not that race matters, culture does.

Those fleeing from Ukraine? I have opened my wallet on several occasions and will keep doing so. And yes, I support them getting refugee status, both in Canada and in Poland, if that is what you’re asking for.

        1. “Those fleeing from Ukraine? I have opened my legs on several occasions and will keep doing so.”
…at least you would if you were a real woman, but instead you decided to pimp your kids out to the state.

          1. …comes from being a man.
Now you get to tell me how manly you are without swearing a blue streak, and all yer tasteful crapola about how you don’t need that kinda language to express yourself, and all that. Go back to your New Yorker mag, you pathetic excuse for a man.

    2. Another BS meme. Opening SDA in the morning is like a walk in the park littered with dog crap.

Border is still open in Russia Vs. Ukraine where combat age males are now being rounded up to be sent to the meat grinder.

Since you like linking left progressive sources to support your biases, here’s one:
      https://www.npr.org/2022/08/15/1117605630/ukrainians-express-worries-over-conscription-following-russias-invasion

“Regardless of what the government is saying, Anton Waschuk with the Western NIS Enterprise Fund says a good portion of Ukrainian men would still rather leave the country than fight now or later.”

Who can blame them when the lives are being thrown away by the 1000s.

P.S. The Russians didn’t want that war vs. UkroNazis who have been gearing up for the past 10 years.

      1. How much does the FSB pay you for your gig?

        I bet you also believe:

        – Russia was promised no NATO expansion east
        – 2014 was a coup orchestrated by the west
        – Ukraine has committed an 8 year genocide in the Donbas
        – the referendums – including Crimea – were fair
        – Ukraine is incapable of self determination

        Blah blah blah

“As of July 1, the number of people living in Canada sat at an estimated 38.9 million, an increase of 0.7 per cent, or 284,982 people, from April 1, 2022.”

Where the blank are they going to live?
The tiresome “we need people to grow the economy” is in the article as well.
If my bank said they had to keep increasing the number of customers in order to stay viable I’d know they were operating a Ponzi scheme.
Certainly the construction-housing industry wouldn’t be happy.
And no I don’t hate or begrudge immigrants, ffs.

    1. “Where the blank are they going to live?” . One thing that has occurred to me is that the solution to the housing crisis the government is sure to create is you will no longer be able to own more than one home. Remember there are no property rights in our bill of rights.

  4. I hesitate to post anything on the Russia-Ukraine war, since doing so results in mindless name-calling with no rational thought. But here are two links. First, the Ukrainian army in encircling a fairly large mass of Russian troops in the strategic supply and transportation town of Lyman in Donetsk:
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2022/09/25/lyman-a-supply-hub-in-eastern-ukraine-is-the-last-place-a-russian-soldier-wants-to-be-right-now/

The North American corporate media are not reporting on this, but it could engender more drastic moves by Putin. Read my next post below.

    1. Meanwhile Russia is still attacking Bakhmut and Soledar. Just insanity. I expect Russian deaths to hit 1000 per day for a long while.

  5. Thoughtful people have been discussing the possibility of Russia using tactical nukes, especially if the war worsens for Russia (see my above post). Here is a useful link with two articles:
    https://www.fresnobee.com/opinion/readers-opinion/article266502121.html

I get it there is a paleo-con argument for Western non-involment in the Russia-Ukraine war. First, there is the standard 1900-1941 American isolationist argument. Second, there is the “Western culture and democracy is rotten argument”. Third, there is the “Russian fascism is good” argument. There is at least some valuable grains of truth in the first two arguments.

But the one solid argument of the anti-war side is that continued Russian losses could lead of a major thermonuclear exchange. We have a crazed Russian leader and a senile American president. Irrespective of which side we’re on, we’re all in the same boat if the world turns to cinder. Even if there is no nuclear war, as it stands now we face an economic calamity. We’re all in this economic boat Irrespective which side we’re on.

I support Ukraine, but I am worried. The anti-West side should stress the chance of nuclear war.

    1. First, pls don’t confuse being anti-deeps state Neo-Con regime with being anti-West. Even the Russians are aware of that distinction.
This begs the question to the “pro-West” crowd- are you onside with the deep state Neo-Con regime that has usurped the levers of power in Washington and planned this war going back over 10 years?

Putin’s reference to nuclear response was in response the Western governments having threatened the use of nuclear. Russia doesn’t need to resort to tactical nukes in Ukraine. They have other weapons.

That the west is ramping up the BS lie that Putin is crazy and threatening first use of nuclear should have us worried. The rogue players in Washington are not beyond creating a false flag using a tactical nuke after having completed their propaganda ground work.

    1. Per the article… the nuke extension will “reduce carbon emissions that cause climate change”. Meanwhile “six new electricity generation contracts awarded in late August …Four of those contracts were to plants that burn natural gas, and account for 90 per cent of the 746 megawatts being procured. Two other small contracts were for wind power and electricity storage.”

Natural gas being natural is good esp. when it backs up low efficiency wind vs that CO2 spewing coal plant in Saskatchewan.

  6. “The FDA and the U.S. government, unlike Canadian authorities, fast-tracked the submission and approval process for the newer bivalent vaccines targeted to BA.4/5. Canada however is currently rolling out only the less effective bivalent vaccine targeting BA.1 . This distinction has not been made widely known and I suspect most Canadians erroneously believe they are getting the same new vaccine that Americans are receiving.

Rochelle Walensky, an infectious disease expert and the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recently said in a radio interview that she strongly favoured using the newer bivalent vaccine targeting the most recently prevalent COVID viral strains.

ā€œIf we wait for those data to emerge in human data, not just mice, we will be using what I would consider to be a potentially outdated vaccine,ā€ she said. ā€œThis could have severe consequences for the nation ahead of a projected COVID surge in the fall and winter.ā€

Taking the less effective bivalent booster is still more effective than a third dose of the original vaccine and may be an acceptable choice for many. However, it is unlikely to be safer than the newer updated bivalent vaccine and almost certainly less effective. Not readily disclosing this difference may have been done in order to promote higher levels of booster vaccine acceptance. However, this lack of transparency may well result in greater mistrust of institutions and government. We need to push our government to be more informative, choose more wisely and offer the right bivalent vaccine at the right time. ”

  7. Yet another reason Russia is losing

    https://mil.in.ua/en/news/the-ukrainian-iceye-satellite-yields-the-first-results-on-the-battlefield-the-ministry-of-defense-of-ukraine/

“ā€œFor obvious reasons, I cannot reveal all the details, but just imagine: during the first two days of the satellite’s operation, more than 60 units of military equipment, which the enemy was trying to disguise in forest strips and behind various obstacles, were detected. It was possible because ICEYE satellites are collecting information using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. This equipment would be very difficult or impossible to spot by means of optical satellites,ā€ he wrote.”

This combined with precision strikes from M31 rockets/HIMARS or guided artillery means bad news for Russia.

  8. Re: the comment from Denise. This would seem to apply to anyone; the music you hear in your childhood & adolescence will impress upon you the strongest. At those ages, every new song, every new band, every new genre, is truly NEW to you. You’ve never heard anything like it! How incredible! That thrill of discovery is very difficult to replicate as you age, at least not to that same degree. The tenth, or twentieth, or thirtieth, great rock band you discover won’t hit you quite as much as the first one, especially as newer acts only remind you of acts you discovered in your youth.

Not dissimilar to how one will tend to retain some nostalgia for one’s first love.

That said, as someone who wasn’t even born until the 70s, I can fire up a 50s or 60s music playlist and listen to it for hours. There really was something magical about popular music’s development in those eras. And tv, and movies, and everything else. That generation truly got a Golden Age.

    1. I took him to be blaming others of doing that.

The lad’s not the most self reflective person in the world.
