    1. Yes, this. Refuse to buy the electric. If the quit making the diesel versions, keep the old ones running for decades.

      2. Absolutely no one will buy the electric one unless they are mandated by government to do so. Such as in California.

        What the owners of the forced-purchase electric ones will eventually do is take the [dead] batteries out of them and run them off a diesel generator with an extension cord. Also what you see Tesla drivers doing, towing a generator.

        That’s until the government bans ICE generators. Which they will, sooner or later.

          1. Yes, I’ve seen some of the contortions equipment makers have been forced into for Cali regulations. The price of a Jacobson fairway mower went from around $35-40K to ~$80k a few years ago thanks to re-design for Cali regulations. Bobcats etc. all have DEF and lots of other fun emissions doodads now, super expensive. Farm tractors with DEF too.

            This is all super convenient this year, what with the ammonia industry problems and supply chain shortfalls. The price of DEF is sky-high, and availability is scarce.

        While your statement makes sense, unfortunately many union workers wouldn’t do this. A private contractor can fire them, but city unionized workers will refuse to shovel.

    2. Operator is in one union.
      You need to hire a Electrician and Electrical Union brother to plug it in, run the cord, ect.
      The Generator needs to be refueled and started by Mechanical Engineering Union brother.

    Plus energy conversion losses.

  8. A very good demonstration of the inferior energy density of electrical machines versus conventional fossil fueled machines. They are not even close. “There will be great, green jobs in the Build Back Better future” = bovine excrement. No one ever asks them what those jobs will be, and they don’t know or care even if asked.

  11. Electric powered heavy equipment is not new. Used successfully for decades.

    If it only lasts 2 hours, something is wrong. Extremely poor design or operator error ruined the battery.

    The 3000lb lead battery in my reach truck forklift at work lasts at least 6 hrs lifting 1000-1500lb pallets 40-50 feet up non stop

    It does take overnight to charge, but that’s why any reasonable operator looking to get work done would have more than one battery

    1. overnight charging is easy at the plant or warehouse, because you plug it in the wall

      but out in the field they need to bring diesel generators, and that is true even if the battery lasts 6 hours instead of 2

      burning fuel to produce electricity defeats the purpose , that is the point of the post

    2. Our business is battery backup systems so it seemed natural to look at battery powered forklifts. We asked our battery supplier what they were using. They use propane power exclusively even though they are one of South Florida’s largest battery distributors. Won’t even think about a battery forklift. For our part, we install battery backup systems up to 100 kilowatts. The typical runtime is 15 minutes, just enough for the user to start his generator. Anything above that takes an absurd amount of batteries.

      I love that JCB had to weasel that last bit in there, “at point of use.”

      The machine would be great if it were being used for light duty in an enclosed space, such as inside a factory or a building where airflow can’t handle a propane or diesel engine. That’s a special case that I can’t imagine will occur often enough to support a whole product line. They’re praying for governments to force companies to use this thing.

    So you need five of these machines to do the work that can be done in a day by one that is powered by diesel.
