  1. I’ve got something similar hooked up to one of my synthesizers. Only it just uses a microphone.

    1. And let’s not forget this WONDERFUL tune was co-written by the 3rd Beatle, George Harrison. You can hear Harrison’s unmistakable guitar riff coming out of the song break, after the music comes to a dead halt.

  2. Perhaps a keyboard player will chime in and properly identify the device used by the keyboardist in the Clapton video, but one thing is for certain: it’s not a “Peter Frampton style talk box.”

The Frampton style talk box basically takes the acoustic output of a speaker and directs it through a tube. The end of the tube extends past the microphone, and into the guitarist’s mouth. Then the guitarist can “mouth” words, so the guitar sounds like it’s talking. The guitarist’s vocal mic then sends his “vocals” through the PA system.

“A talk box, in its simplest form, consists of a horn driver and a plastic tube. You’ll even find tutorials on the Internet that can teach you how to make a crude version at home with some materials from the hardware store.”

Other classic talk box users: Joe Perry, Richie Sambora, Joe Walsh.

    1. In the Yamaha world it’s called a breath controller. Notes are played on the keyboard but how they begin, sustain and end are controlled with your breath. Makes a rather even keyboard sound become more lifelike for a wind instrument like sax or trumpet.
You can see him rolling a little wheel with his left hand, that is to modify the pitch. Like bending a guitar string.
