  1. I worked for a woman who was a passenger on the first USA ship the Germans torpedoed in WW2.
Just off Ireland it was…..lovely woman. I used to water ski her daughter around Greek islands.

  2. When I hooked up with the family and became a humble servitor
    they had made their pile.
That phrase of Johnson….”riches beyond the dreams of avarice”.
It was like that…but they were decent folks….didn’t show any side. They asked my colleague to come back to the big D and be their butler. Big D is Dallas my friend…..in the great state of Texas…..which is in the USA.

  3. The putative butler was a Dubliner named Joe Stokes….a young amiable pipe smoking black Irishman. How the Yanks perceived him as being remotely Jeevesish eludes me to this day.
Black meaning black black hair and white white skin.
Was the torpedoed ship the Athenia? I can’t remember.

    1. It was indeed the Athenia. James Goodson, the famous fighter pilot of the 4th Fighter Group, wrote about his adventure on the Athenia the night she was torpedoed in his book “Tumult In The Clouds”.
