  1. They yearn for the good old days of the Paleolithic Era.

  2. We have the technology to extract enormous amounts of oil and natural gas. The limiting factor is poor policy and tax choices by governments.

    1. This. I stopped reading when I got to ‘fossil’. Petroleum is abiotic, and is created by interactions between Earth’s mantle and its crust.

      1. And you know who have discovered this … and push this science more than anyone else? Yes … “The Russians” The Russians refuse to “believe” oil comes from Dino-saurs and dead plants. Those EVIL Russians.

Now GIVE US your Oil and Nat. gas!!! OK … we’ll pay in Rubles

      2. Edward …. just how many barrels of your abiotic oil have you discovered and produced?
You need to have some serious stupid to believe the non sedimentary basin source nonsense.
And yes I am a geologist and yes I worked in the oil patch for decades.
I am always amazed what a twit who has never taken a petroleum geology course will put online to show everyone how ill informed he is.

  3. ” Without energy, civilization dies,….”
There were many advanced civilizations in their time that just died..
Summer, Assyria and some of the startling examples were in central and south America.
They rose, they lived and then they were no more.
The multitudes of ‘experts’ that went to school for a long time and never had to confront real life of today think that it can’t happen.
    Yea?
    Just watch.

    1. In the spring, I read the book “The Second Sleep” which takes place 800 years into the future, but starts dating from when an electro magnetic pulse from the Sun destroyed the satellites and communications systems on Earth (book suggests that this happens between 2022 and 2024). The Earth’s population declines dramatically in those 800 years. There are no planes, no trains, no trucks or cars. People either walk, ride bicycles or use horse drawn carts. People do not travel farther than 100 km. from their places of birth (and then, only to trade). The book is an extreme example of what an EMP would do to the modern world, but it is a cautionary tale.
I was born in 1952 – a true Baby Boomer. In my life, every decade has improved immensely and I consider my self fortunate to have done some overseas travel, to own my home and to have some investments for my old age. But I am always mindful that my nice life could always come to a screeching halt because of the evil actions of a few world leaders.

      1. Big mom

1952 – same and yes, things have improved markedly..(although Social Media is one I would not call an Improvement)..

“…But I am always mindful that my nice life could always come to a screeching halt because of the evil actions of a few world leaders…”

And now we have exactly that happening throughout EVERY Western Hemisphere supposed Democracy. THEY (politicians seemingly from Big City Mayor on up), are ALL in it together. Bought, Paid & seduced by that NAZI POS – KLAUS Schwab

The past 2.5 yrs has proven that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

      2. Ohhhhhh Mommmaaa …

1955 (a mere youth). I am doin fine, health wise and financially, but the belts will get tightened for our looming economic decline. I just hope it doesn’t last 10 years. Yes, I have lived a charmed life having JUST dodged VietNam (thank you, President Nixon), and bore witness to an unimaginable human technological advancement … perhaps it is my old age driven nostalgia … but I mostly miss the innocent, happy, beautiful days of my youth. I honestly believe the first 20 years of my life were the ABSOLUTE BEST years of America … and esp. California. To put that in perspective … that’s coming from a kid who had (by all measures) a shitty childhood … divorced, alcoholic parents, the whole sordid story. But those were still the best years of life. The best years of our country.

Technology hasn’t mitigated the utterly insane and destructive cultural and political disintegration of our society. Our harshly cynical, me first, rude, snide, “Rap” culture is the horrific byproduct of our high tech culture. Families have been all but destroyed. The American Dream is slipping further and further from my own children’s reach. I’m not a Luddite … but at some point we need to pause and count the COST of our advancements. What have we gained … but at what cost? What have we lost?

Stop me … I’m sounding like an old person. I believe it’s what’s called … wisdom. Discernment.

        1. I’m nostalgic for life in 1970s California and I was only there on month long road trip as a kid. Sad to see what’s become of many of the places we stopped along the way.

  4. Are we (in Alberta), running out of Oil..?? LOL
uh, not for a few thousand years…..

We’ve barely scratched the Oil Sands.

  5. Ah yes…the ol’ “peak oil” canard. Used to great effect in the 70″s so they’re giving it another go.

    1. There’s a grain of truth to it. Most of the EASY oil has been found and extracted already. Nobody is shooting a gun into the ground in rural Texas and watching oil burst out any more. The oil that’s left in the earth, and no doubt there’s a lot of it, is harder to extract. MUCH harder. Deep offshore drilling? Oil sands? Fracking? That’s what “peak oil” LOOKS LIKE. It’s when you’ve used up all the easy-to-get stuff and have to start resorting to the hard-to-get stuff.

The hard-to-get stuff takes more energy to get out of the ground, leaving less energy following extraction to power civilization. This means it costs more and will always cost more. There’s no free lunch here. We will likely reach a tipping point within the next century (if not sooner) where the fossil fuels remaining in the earth become so difficult to extract that they can’t be profitably extracted at ANY price.

      1. I thought “peak oil” was a good thing, because when you drill for oil at the tops of mountains, it will flow downhill naturally, and extraction is thus much easier?
