These were not paid or Union actors. The airport authority that runs Pearson runs these exercises I think every year and they advertise for volunteers. I volunteered one year and got to play the role of a seriously injured victim lying on the floor in Terminal 1. The scenario I took part in was a terrorist bomb attack. They do different scenarios for each exercise. In some exercises, they go all out on the fake injury makeup – some of the simulated wounds can be very graphic.
I do find it extraordinarily disturbing, though, that in this year’s scenario the threat was free speech and free assembly. They do indeed hate us and wish to do – and look forward to doing – us harm.
I cannot find a publicly posted call for volunteers but I’m not looking too hard at this hour. And I’m already a little drunk in prep for Fenris’ post this evening.
The GTAA page does mention that there are “partners” and “members of the airport community” involved in the exercise, so there may indeed have been paid people there to act as protestors. But when I did one of these things years ago, most in the crowd were volunteers.
A friend of mine volunteered for this and was there on Saturday. I printed the GTAA release form for her because her printer blows goats.
There’s nothing generally sinister about these training exercises. They do them at least annually and they do use different scenarios. But their choice of “threat” or “disaster” this year is indeed reprehensible. We will never see the GTAA stage a training event where violent Antifa or BLM rioters are the threat.
