  1. Extremely riveting. What a horse, what a jockey, what a race. The announcer didn’t catch up with Rich Strike until he was overtaking the leaders.

    1. I’ve always had the greatest respect for jockeys. Always. Plainly put they have tremendous courage.
Try imagining yourself in their position when they are plying their trade. Buckets of guts.
They ALL know the catastrophic results of things going sideways and yet they continue to get back up on that ton of speed.

  2. Thanks for this Kate. Nice riding by the jockey. Kept his head in some tight spots and guided the horse through to get some running room and they both won.

    1. The bloody horse was in last spot just after it had moved into “third lane” at the beginning. How did the jockey find the openings and the energy in his horse?

  3. Big Red in his unforgettable race ran the last furlong faster than all the preceding….he was increasing speed at the end of the race. He sure loved to outrun other horses !
That race was something to see….I still get a thrill watching it. He was a very dignified horse in his retirement. I think he knew he was special.

    1. They say they race to “improve the breed.” Secretariat record time in 1973 1:59.40 vs yesterday’s 2:02.61

At 6 lengths per second that would be almost 20 lengths.

50 years, way better drugs and they are going slower? Sounds like US public schools.

  4. Amazing. I think Rich Strike in the last turn was about where you would expect a last minute fill-in for a scratched horse should be, about 14-16 out of 20 horses. The horse and jockey were not even visible in the wide angle of the field camera shots. Suddenly the horse rocketed inside, out side, and around a few horses. Boom! the jockey found an open lane and #21 was sprinting down the rail while everyone was watching the favorites dueling back and forth outside.

    Incredible!

I was hoping for a Minnesota Horse to win it. Zandon was the favorite of the field at 3-1. He ended up in third. Zozos, the other MN horse and a long shot came in 10th.

This will be a long remembered Derby. I think a Triple Crown Winner will not happen this year.

  5. No only did he work him through traffic, but was pulling away with every stride at the wire
    What a race.

  6. Something to put on your desk; a picture of the horses racing down the front straight for the first time, with Rich Strike tucking in dead last.
Captioned: It ain’t over ’til it’s over.

  7. That was one hell of a finishing kick.

Nasty horse though. Kept biting the pony. The Brad Marchand of the racing world.

  8. This should serve as inspiration to the conservative party.

  9. Is it my imagination, or did I see Rich Strike, his head cocked to the right, looking at Epicenter as they ran down the stretch, as if to say, “I gotcha!”

    1. No. You saw saw him cock his head to the right, looking at Epicenter, to mark him and see if he had him. When he saw that he did he put his head back down and turned on the afterburner instead of pacing him for a place or show.

That was the last of the three major highlights of the race. The second was the one everyone’s talking about, the jog around Messier. The first was coming out of the final turn, making a hole where there wasn’t one to get up into the pack. That was the critical move that put him in position to pull off the other two.

“The Look” was really something. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a horse so obviously thinking a race before.

      1. Did horse make the hole or the jockey? Amazing race either way!

        1. The officer gives the order to go over the top, but it’s up to the grunt to actually do it. Some refuse. Most balk to some degree or another.

In this case I assume the officer knew the temperament and abilities of his grunt. It was a gutsy move on both their parts.

      2. Dick Francis, in his many novels, would remark about the interaction between horse and jockey; perhaps the “look” was just the horst channeling the jockey.

    1. Absolutely Amazing….wow..!!

One wonders who might have placed a 20, 50 or more dollar bet on that horse….Laffing all the way to the Brinks Truck…!!

Ya gotta love it, What an incredible race..!!

  10. In the last 220 yards, that horse just motored; as if the rest of the horses were running in treacle.Incredible, I’ve rarely seen anything so … incredible.

    1. Rich Strike was clocked at over 44mph in the stretch, after running 9 furlongs.
