        I don’t like some of the stories coming out of Eastern Ukraine either, but I won’t use those reports to justify even more violence.

        Some of those women may really be innocent. Are you in the habit of blaming the victim?

            Holocaust scholar Omer Bartov’s book Erased. Bartov chronicles the Ukrainen zeal to assist the nazis during WW11.

            He also points out how they (ukes) have worked hard to erase all records of their shameful past.

          3. I can’t see how Protocols of Elders of Zion are any less relevant than atrocities committed by Ukrainians during WWII. I am well aware of a lot of evil deeds committed by Bandera and UPA during WWII. Volhynian massacres are the best example of that.

            What drove Ukrainians to that madness wasn’t a love for NAZI ideology but insane barbarity they were subjected to in the 20s and especially 30s. Millions starved, brutalized beyond belief. A crime easily comparable in aim and magnitude to Holocaust. So when Germans came and briefly made Ukrainian lives better they lashed out at everyone who their liberators didn’t like, and they were grateful to Germans (just like Poles were grateful to Napoleon a century and change earlier). I can’t condone but I understand where they were coming from. It was an irrational reaction to trauma on monumental scale.

    I remember watching that when it was shown on PBS more than 40 years ago. Every time I hear this on the Saturday Metropolitan Opera broadcasts, it’s always a crowd-pleaser. It’s Verdi at his best.

    As an aside, this is the Italian version of Don Carlo, which is usually the one that’s presented. It was originally written in French for the Paris Opera and there are some differences in the libretto. Both are definitely worthwhile to either see or listen to.

    Our own politicians bind and its own citizens with a multitude of restrictions, regulations and laws.
    You need licenses for EVERYTHING plus insurance that our politicians have regulated that you must have.
    That is just if you want to drive anything or go anywhere with special licenses needed for different machines or vehicles.
    Everyone is stuck watching the television as doing anything else is illegal.
    WHERE IS EVERYBODY?
    You can’t fish, hunt or trap without licenses and permits too.
    Skidoos are now becoming museum pieces as well as four wheelers soon.

    The economic devastation is truly horrendous for the tourism industry when you can only be spectators as you can’t touch or even help out without it being illegal.
    Foreign capital can’t keep losing money as the massive amounts of regulations is truly disheartening.
    Our country has very nasty weather as well which very much limits our tourism as well.
    Taking people out on an aluminum boat with plywood covering for shelter ain’t gonna cut it.

I appreciate where the author is coming from – that GDP estimated in USD alone is not a good indicator of the size of a country’s economy, other than the US and a few others – but the Russian economy still isn’t very big. The problem is Russia diverts much more of its economy to military spending. Russia also exports its commodities in a highly focused way. Finland, for example, will have a tough time replacing its natural gas imports, 92% of which come from Russia. A secondary problem is that Russia decided to invade Ukraine at a time of high demand for commodities and during a highly inflationary period. Boycotting Russian goods will really hurt those economies. If the Russian economy is almost the size of Germany’s due to purchasing power, then the Chinese economy is twice as large as the American economy – except it isn’t. This is why Americans drive around in big-ass trucks, Russians drive around in rusty lemons and many Chinese still ride around in bicycles or take public transit.
