China braces for effects of global fertiliser shortage;
China is largely self-sufficient in staple crops like wheat and rice, but the war is also driving up fertiliser prices.
More than a half of the potash – a key nutrient for major commodity crops – that China consumes each year is imported, while customs data show that nearly 53 per cent of potassium purchases last year came from Russia and Belarus, the largest and third largest suppliers to China, respectively.
Moscow earlier this month recommended suspending fertiliser exports, while Lithuania and Ukraine have already banned transit of Belarusian potash through their ports. Ukraine, a major producer of agricultural products, also banned exports of fertilisers on Saturday.
“This will definitely have some impact [on food security],” said Xu Hongcai, deputy director of the economic policy commission under the China Association of Policy Science.
“If the trade of fertilisers and grain is interrupted, how can we do spring fieldwork? How can we hold the rice bowls of our 1.4 billion population in our own hands? There will be a lot of trouble.”

Saskatchewan has natural gas, petroleum oil, grains, oil seeds, and potash. All are high demand. Expect royalties and taxes to fill the provincial government coffers. Expect the federal government to find a way to claim this bounty for “social justice” and distribute to Justin’s friends.

I will inform my fellow bloggers as to the changes that we are facing in just one years time for COP costs. Last year we paid 440 dollars a tonne for nitrogen and 650 for phosphorus. In the fall you could have bought nitrogen for about 850 and today 1400, phos 900 before Christmas and 1350 today, as we bought a couple semi loads for an additional 730 acres that was offered to us for rent as I’m feeling some producers do not want to play this game anymore at these input cost levels.
We bought diesel fuel late November for 93 cents a litre and last week it was 1.55. Our storage will just get us through seeding and that’s it.
My brother manages a freight company out of Edmonton and invoices last week had a 73 percent fuel surcharge on original invoice.
Yeah maybe we get a ceasefire in the war but how long before infrastructure and production even gets back to original levels. This isn’t some bullshit journalist garbage, this is gonna get real for all of us and very soon. If you feel life is rebounding to something we had in the pre pandemic days, it ain’t gonna happen !
So come harvest and factory food production in September/October we will be seeing about a twofold increase in food prices ?.

Sadly, we have no media that would tell us these things. Truth now has to be pieced together through anecdotal accounts like a cryptic puzzle.
Between rising gas prices, the resulting inflation of everything, the food prices increase, the government now admitting that the jabs injured people and other things I’m sure I’m leaving out, I really don’t think that massive civil unrest is out of the question. In any Western country. One spark could make this country unrecognizable. Our leaders should be very afraid.
I still believe the vaccines are going to push everyone over the edge. Look at the number of dead after only a year. There are a lot of people who’ll have nothing to live for but revenge.
Have a friend who farms about 4000 acres in southern Alberta. He uses mostly anhydrous ammonia for fertilizer. Two years ago, his anhydrous bill was $100,000. I wonder what it’s going to be this year…

The main reason for inflation is the devaluation of currencies by the rapid increase in the money supply. The US has doubled its money supply since 2020. So expect 100% inflation balanced over a few years (20% over 5 years) as a minimum.
But there is also panic pricing going on. People who own things see the panic in others so they raise their prices. Because so few people actually make things anymore the panic pricing people are a very small percentage of the population. I congratulate them. Now is their time to feast and our time to pay for being slothful hangers on.
If you actually made something you could charge more for your products / services and you could “participate” in the coming inflation (which is now 2 years old).
Sure there is a war on and wheat and fertilizer can’t make it to the ports for export. But aren’t there trains and highways from Russia to China (trans-Mongolian and Manchurian)? Can’t this stuff move east and not west?
I’m a bit cynical on China. First they create a problem. Then they solve it with their brilliant centrally planned (Justin admired) communist system that benefits all Chinese equally. So yes, there will be a lot of trouble, but not for the elite, only for those who refuse to suck it up.
