In a country crammed with Russians, they were trying to make Russian a second-class language. Russians who had lived there happily for decades were pressured to take Ukrainian citizenship and adopt Ukrainian versions of their Christian names.
The schools were promoting a national hero, Stepan Bandera, who Russians strongly disliked and regarded as a terrorist. And they were teaching history which often had an anti-Russian tinge. Quite a few people told me they felt put upon by these policies. Why couldn’t they just be left alone?
Until that point, Ukraine had been a reasonably harmonious country in its 20-odd years of existence. After that visit I saw big trouble coming, both in the Crimea and in the Don Basin, where I also travelled that year.
The Ukes behaved like retarded assholes and are reaping the consequences of their fecklessness. No sympathies here. Any country with zero survival instincts (i.e. don’t piss off Russia, it never ended well for anyone) deserves what it gets. All that’s required to end this war is for the Penis Pianist to resign, take his cabinet to his Florida mansion and let Vlad set up a government that won’t suck US/NATO cock and understand the reality of the geopolitical situation.
The common blue & white collar worker in Russia is no more responsible for this war than his or her counterpart in Ukraine. Putin and his Oligarchs, Zelensky and his Oligarchs , along the Heads of NATO and their Oligarchs are responsible.

As I understand it, Crimea was a part of Russia until it was given to Ukraine in 1954. It has a majority russian population and that may account for the referendum result that they become part of Russia in 2014. They were a russian majority long before and during their Ukrainian rule.
Not rally. Crimea is ancient in history and many people can lay claim to it. Russians love to mention 1954 ad nauseum as if before 1954 Crimea was this russian monolith. Nothing further frim the truth. Ten years earlier hundreds of thousands of Tatars have been expelled from Crimea and russians were settled in their place. It became a russian monolith only through ethnic cleansing. And Tatars weren’t original native inhabitants either. And before the extermination and expulsion of Tatars you had Holodomor in the 30s where hundreds of thousands (millions?) of Crimeans died and before that in early 20s you had another partly Soviet made famine and mass starvation. And after each event you had mass forced settlement of ethnic russians into the region.
And before that you had multiple short lived Bolshevik and White russian and German governments, and before that a first mooslimb democracy ever, and before that, and before that, and before that, and Khanate, and Mongols and Rus (not russia), and Byzantium and Romans, and Greek and Scythians….

This Ukraine debacle has shredded the solidarity, esprit de corps, and optimism achieved by the Trucker’s Freedom Convoy, not to mention that it sucked all the air out of the public space. There are Populists on both sides, and they have been smarming each other, on all the websites I’ve visited.
