A number of years ago, soprano Kathleen Battle was fired from the Met by then-director Joseph Volpe. She was quarrelsome and rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, including him. Finally, he had enough and gave her the boot.
Now current director Peter Gelb fires Anna Netrebko simply because of her country of origin? Then again, Gelb doesn’t particularly impress me, considering what he’s done with the Met since he took over.
