  1. Oh, goody! Another movie I’ve not seen yet. I’ll add that to my round tuit list.

      1. You’re welcome.

The whole movie is brilliant from beginning to end. I only have to think of a given scene or concept and I start laughing.

By the way, did you notice a certain cross-reference with Back to the Future?

        1. I did not, unfortunately. Do tell. In this case the internet didn’t help me, but I could see there would easily be a comparison. I did, in fact, do some homework before seeing the movie. There was nothing that compared this movie to Back To The Future, that I could see, unless I missed it.

However, I got distracted by a subtle hint of comedic genius that was quite evident in the ‘pay’ phone call scene to the President. Weren’t they all in Washington D.C.? That would hardly be a toll call or “long” distance! Then, to have a scene where they decide to shoot up a Coke machine for small change was really nuts! I read on IMDB that Cokacola owned the Movie Company that produced Dr Strangelove. So, there was a dig there.

          1. B-

Correction, discard the first paragraph at 3:13 AM.
(A comparison is not a reference, pardon me)

Actually, the reference is the other way around.

In Back to the Future there is a reference to Dr Strangelove, in that in the opening sequence, the amplifier switch that Marty turns on is labeled ‘CRM114,’  a reference to the DR 114 cryptographic radio device in Strangelove.

Similarly, also in A Clockwork Orange there is reference to Strangelove: The drug given to Alex for his anti-violence conditioning is Serum 114.

            Et voilà!

          2. You asked:
“By the way, did you notice a certain cross-reference with Back to the Future?”

I’m crazy tired here, apology, omit this line:
“Actually, the reference is the other way around.”

Gosh, darn, I’m so stupid here!
            Over and Out!

          3. Actually, the reference is the other way around.

Nah. It showed that Kubrick could see into the future…..

As for the Coke machine scene, there’s no mention of where the air base was located, though, based on the scene where the Army column approaches the perimeter, it appears to be in a rural setting.

        2. As for the pay phone scene he dialed 3 digits. To reach the Operator, even back then, it was a one digit call by dialing the number zero. Once the Operator answered, the coin dropped back to reimburse the calling party. The pay phone made a noise when it did that. There was no noise in the movie, in that case. The pay phone box was beautiful– complete with a privacy door and a light inside. Most of those even had seats inside too. I liked that aspect.

I know It’s only a movie, all fantasy. Still, like you wrote,
“The whole movie is brilliant from beginning to end.”
          — I’m keeping my recorded version in the system, that is, provided Telus doesn’t accidentally crash again.

          P.S.
“Kubrick could see into the future…..”
          Very true, ha!

  2. I see that when they aren’t preparing to liberate Europe, the Russians are preparing to return to the Moon:

“The Luna-25 is set to become the first domestic spacecraft in Russia’s modern history on the surface of the Earth’s natural satellite.”

    https://tass.com/science/1393447

Let’s see what the Americans have been doing in that department, shall we?

“A SpaceX rocket is on a collision course with the moon after spending almost seven years hurtling through space, experts say.”

    https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/jan/26/out-of-control-spacex-rocket-on-track-to-collide-with-the-moon

    1. “…the Russians are preparing to return to the Moon:”

If only they were prepared to stay there.

  3. Gee, if the Moon wasn’t in the way, that SpaceX rocket might hit Ottawa. Pity, that.

    1. Agree. Just posted that on another thread. Sorry for the duplication. Ruechel is one of our most brilliant thinkers and spokesman regarding the deception and manipulation that has happened during the pandemic. Nothing short of our human rights is at stake. It’s a long piece, but worth spending time.

      1. LindaL

Thanks for keeping it active. He is such a clear thinking person, more people need to take the time to read his information.

  4. Earlier this evening, I got back from yet another trip to my house in B. C. The highway was, for the most part, bare and dry.

There were a lot of truckers on the road, but, interestingly enough, I never encountered any rogues. During most of my trips, there had been a few cowboys who decided to drive faster than the speed limit or take unnecessary risks.

This time, I didn’t have any problems. In fact, it seemed that most of vehicles in the hammer lane (to borrow an expression from a thread earlier this week) were SUVs this time. Maybe the fact that, this time, the truckers behaved themselves was their way of showing support for their colleagues in the convoys.

    1. “…the hammer lane…”

LOL. You’re welcome. In another lifetime I drove freight truck. Used to deliver modular home frames, too. Eighty feet long and no hinge in the middle. Fun in a corner.

  5. Today is Mozart’s 266th birthday. SiriusXM Channel 76/Symphony Hall is observing the day with his works.

Saturday at 4 PM MST will be the last airing of this week’s Philadelphia Orchestra concert and it’ll be featuring his music as well.

Jordan Peterson interviews Brian Peckford about his constitutional challenge to the travel bans. A bit awkward in the beginning because they post all the footage including preamble and setup but worth watching through.

  7. Molly Daft over at Gizmodo thinks the big boys (Rogan and Peterson) discussing climate change with their big thinky is silly.

    https://gizmodo.com/jordan-peterson-joe-rogan-climate-denial-1848425540

The comments are funny. Molly seems to be hung up on Peterson’s comment that “climate change causes everything” – which is the message being relayed to us through the media (her). It’s killing the polar bears, the penguins, makes sea level rise, more drought, more rain, more hot weather, more cold weather, and it even ate some kid’s homework.

    1. Rogan and Peterson might be the two least qualified people on the planet. They have no business discussing anything.

      1. And as you’re from Uranus the only thing you’re qualified to discuss is anal bleaching.

  8. Tennessee school board bans Holocaust graphic novel ‘Maus’

    https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/26/tennessee-school-board-bans-holocaust-comic-maus-by-art-spiegelman.html

“One member, Tony Allman, was quoted in the minutes as saying, “Being in the schools, educators and stuff we don’t need to enable or somewhat promote this stuff.”

“It shows people hanging, it shows them killing kids, why does the educational system promote this kind of stuff, it is not wise or healthy,” Allman said, according to the minutes.”

This is the ugly reality of ’empowering local control’ and letting parents control the education of kids that aren’t their own.

    https://popular.info/p/the-war-on-library-books

    1. If it is determined that graphic novels are worthy of study, “Maus” is it.

I also read “Night” by Elie Wiesel. Wiesel and his father were both told to lie about their ages to escape instant execution. The son added years and the father deducted. The Nazis occupied their home in Hungarian occupied Romania late in the war so he only spent 13 months in captivity but had the indignity of being transferred to Buchenwald just ahead of the Russian liberation of Auschwitz delaying liberation a few months.

I also read “If this is a Man”by Primo Levi. Italy was taken over by the Nazis late in the war and Levi only spent 11 months imprisoned before Aischwitz was liberated by the Russians. Again, it is a tale of the stupidity and random brutality of the holocaust. A few years ago I took a course in Holocaust literature and read these books.

      1. What’s Russian liberation?

Some words don’t get along too well close together. Like Russian and liberation.

Anyone who thinks the Red Army liberated anything should not be publicly commenting.

        1. Not so fast. In the context of Auschwitz the word liberation makes sense. Yes, it was liberated meaning the death machine was topped. This of course does not mean that russians liberated Poland for example. Far from it, that was merely a change of occupying force (a change from brutal and orderly to a brutal, capricious and incompetent).

P.S. Did you find out how many CVs did US have operational in 1941?

    2. There is no such thing a graphic novel. They are comic books. Comic book have no place in a school library. All should be removed. The end.

  9. Trudeau is hiding under his bed due to self isolation required because he was near someone with the dreaded corona. Supposedly! Big Bad Tuckers made Justy vewwy afwaid, I think. No doubt spooning under there with his lifelong friend Gewwy Butts.

    1. “Health Minister Jason Coprolite…announces the Pfizer Ivermectin knockoff, Pax-something or other, will be available Jan 31.”

      FTFY.

Also, I hope the pill is small enough to be used as a suppository, ’cause he can shove it up his arse.

COVID does indeed have terrible morbidities.

  11. Get Woke, Get Slightly Less Insanely Rich.

For those here not interested in gaming, you may be surprised to learn that the industry is now bigger than the movie and music industries combined. Sales were somewhere near $60 billion back in 2020, alone. But, the wokesters have infected that entertainment industry as well, nearly destroying some franchises with their in-your-face woke activism and alienating millions of fans in the process… exactly like the Hollywood elitists have done to their industry.

Why Have Sales Crashed For These Top Gaming Franchises?

  12. Just a commentary on how the RCMP has made itself a scourge rather than a organisation to look up to. Especially with the convoy headed to Ottawa.

High River, Alberta – During the last major flood of the Highwood River, the RCMP broke into houses and stole firearms. A crime that no one has been prosecuted for.

Carsland, Alberta – UNIFOR sets up an illegal picket line blocking access to a Co-Op card lock facility. There was a strike at Federated Cooperatives oil refinery in Regina, Saskatchewan. The card lock facility is independent from from Federated Cooperatives, therefore no legal reason to set up a picket line. The RCMP stood guard for the criminals blocking the access. There was no attempt by the RCMP to inform the UNIFOR criminals that they were illegally blocking the road. However, anyone attempting to get into the facility was warned they would be criminally prosecuted for any violence.

Ottawa, Ontario – if the RCMP try to stop or impede the convoy it will solidify the fact that it is nothing more than “Thugs for Hire”. Don’t be surprised if “Safety Checks” are set up and summons issued for windshield chips and dusty rigs.

    1. Ontario has a provincial police force (OPP). RCMP don’t do safety checks nor issue traffic tickets.

      1. Okay. But MikeT does have a point.

How do we know that HRH and HER and the inner circle didn’t recruit from a stable from around the GLOBE for security.

“JUST WATCH THEM”…they’ll say it’s a January CRISIS.

    2. You left out a couple, MikeT:

      1. The killing of Robert Dziekanski at Vancouver International Airport in 2007;
      2. Officers firing at an unidentified man in front of a fire hall half full of people near Truro, Nova Scotia in 2020;
      3. Most recently, evidence that has come to light that the Canadian Gun Registry was never deleted, defying a federal order;
      4. Two personal experiences of my own where RCMP officers looked me in the eye & outright lied.

I no longer trust any of the bastards.

      1. “I no longer trust any of the bastards.”

100% agree. They’re thugs cynically abusing the system. They’re not your friends. They’re not the good guys.

  13. 1967-01-27: remembering the crew of Apollo 1–Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee.

In the aftermath of the fire, there was, of course, a lot of finger-pointing. NASA was accused of setting unreasonable standards and deadlines in view of JFK’s goal of “before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth.” North American Aviation was the prime contractor for the Command and Service Modules and it came under close scrutiny in the subsequent investigations.

Among the findings were sloppy workmanship (including a worker’s socket left inside the CM) as well as questionable design (an inward-opening hatch as well as the use of pure oxygen in the cabin).

There was some administrative fallout from that as well. Harrison “Stormy” Storms (who worked on the X-15) was the head of North American’s Space Division. He was transferred to a different group inside the company.

Joe Shea, Apollo program manager, was moved to a different administrative position inside NASA but left for a job in private industry soon after that.

John Healey took over North American’s re-design of the Command Module, working closely with some of NASA’s astronauts and, in October 1968, Apollo 7 successfully flew and completed its mission.

  14. Says the guy who has been peddling fear for 2 years….
    ——————————————————————————
“We have let our lives be controlled for the last two years in a significant amount of fear and now we are going to have to change some of that thinking,” Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore said Thursday.

    https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-s-top-doctor-says-it-s-time-to-learn-to-live-with-covid-19-1.5757373?presentid=webnews&ocid=msedgntp

    1. Dr. Moore had a good view of the convoy from his Toronto ivory tower. Turns out some people do actually disagree with him. This must have come as quite a surprise to the doctor.
