Another argument in favour of abolishing tenure…..
Another argument for insane asylums.
I don’t think so. The problem, most of the time, isn’t with tenure system, it is with activist administrators and student organization (with bland, politically correct, apparatchik drones on one side and with the rabid activists on another). Removing tenure system would mean that people like Jordan Peterson or Gad Saad would be fired years ago. If anything the tenure system should be strengthened to protect them so they don’t end up like Rick Mehta or that woman recently fired from Western (forgot her name). It is the same old argument that Milton Freedman was making decades ago. Tenure should be protecting the politicly incorrect, those going against the mainstream, those refusing to conform to groupthink. And yes, as a consequence it would protect idiots like the discount Lord Helmet above. https://youtu.be/jTJq8co38Pk?t=43
If tenure was abolished, people like him wouldn’t have a job. It’s as simple as that.
And, no, it doesn’t protect the politically incorrect or those who go against the system. It protects those who continue to bring in funding. No funding, no job and the system doesn’t seem to be too choosy where that money comes from.
Your first point isn’t valid, (the second is). He still would have a job, he isn’t nuttier than a huge proportion of teachers who have no problems holding on to their jobs. without tenure he might not choose to express his sentiments openly, but he would be just as nutty and useless to students. Probably useless as a researcher too.
My point is about how the tenure system is supposed to work. It is not a bad idea, it has worked in the past, although it was being gradually subverted and losing its purpose for the last four decades or so. It no longer works the way it is supposed to. It cannot work in the snowflake multi culti campus culture. But the problem is the change in campus culture not the institution of tenure.
He still would have a job
Let’s put it this way: without tenure, it would make it easier to sack him. All it takes is an administrator who doesn’t like him or unfavourable reviews from students and he might have to revise his résumé. Canning somebody who’s tenured often involves lawyers and that can get messy.
I saw that happen at Armpit College.
Yes, it would also be easier to fire Gad Saad and Jordan Peterson. Administrators are often worse offenders than professors. They are almost exclusively automatons focused on PR and always ready to hammer any nail that sticks out. Giving them power would ensure a situation where professors have to conform to groupthink to the same degree high school teachers do. It would make things worse. Yes, it is already bad but tenure does not make things worse.
Student reviews are another thing. They should never be used as a metric of performance. Good instructors on harder more challenging courses routinely score lower on evaluations than instructors who take it easy and set expectations to lower standard. This has only gotten worse with the me me me I-am-special-I-phone-participation-trophy generation. You have taught at the academia, you know that instructors pay a price for demanding quality, enforcing deadlines, putting a premium on coherence and discounting feel good bullshit.
In short: the better the tenure works the stronger the diversity of opinion on campus. You get more idiots but you also get more brilliance. The weaker the tenure the more mediocracy you get.
Getting rid of faculty unions on the other hand….
I’m guessing he was speaking to a mirror?
Dear professor, as George Carlin has pointed out, “cocksucker is not a bad man, cocksucker is a good woman”, also I fart in your hepa filter.
“Just Another Hard Working, Competent Educator”
Given that this is the 2nd post of the same thing on this blog. Where does that put you? Yes the guy is an idiot, but seriously why are you reposting an old topic? It’s your typical tiresome trope. 60 minute videos of 5 minute topics.
Are you a leftist plant? Because your rhetoric certainly points to it.
Droning on Robert, the best tool the liberals and left have.
You’re free to ask for your money back OH WAIT
What’s the professor’s name?
Barry Mehler, of Ferris State University in Michigan. All that’s happened to him so far is to be placed on paid leave. There’s one law governing the firing of university professors and another for most of the rest of us. Even so, some of his colleagues are outraged at his treatment.
Charles Bacon, president of the Ferris Faculty Association, said in a statement Saturday that the university’s response to the video was “intimidation and coercion directed at all faculty, not just Dr. Mehler.” He added that the association considered the suspension to be an “attack on academic freedom” that suppressed intellectual discourse. […]
Bacon, the faculty association’s president, said in a statement that Mehler’s classes “are very popular, in particular because he challenges students’ assumptions and makes the class extremely interesting.”
“In fact,” Bacon said, “I am told that we have had administrators visit his class and come away with statements like, ‘I wish I’d had a professor like you when I was in college.’ ”
The rate of decline in the US and Canada is accelerating.
Unionized, tenured, and close to retirement. I’ll bet that this display was nothing but a tactic to accelerate his retirement. Perhaps he will be allowed to claim his accumulated sick time until it is exhausted, and then retire. Maybe even use up Long-term Disability for his obvious distress. He could remain on the college’s employment lists (with full benefits) for years before actually retiring.
And he may also keep the privileges of being a professor emeritus.
But WE’RE the crazy ones.
I love the way everybody is PRETENDING that universities, colleges and schools have been functional for the last two years. Students and lecturers (teachers) pretend the syllabus has been adhered to and tests and exams have been scheduled and taken. Nothing could be further from the truth. We are raising the dumbest most frightened cohort of uneducated students ever.
Hawk up a lunger and spit on his visor.
In 1994 and 1995 my two sons entered elementary school. The Gay is Good propaganda machine was running at maximum horsepower.
In 1997 and 1998 after 3 years of relentless indoctrination their word for anything bad, silly, stupid or offensive was “gay”.
Kids have very good bullshit detection devices.
It’s middle class urban women we need to worry about.
It’s a training system, not an education system.
I’m curious what decontamination protocol this clown follows. What about the exterior of his helmet, his clothes, any exposed skin…
You get the idea.
Of course almost all university professors are leftists who firmly believe we should cede our rights and let the wise and enlightened likes of them guide our society, as the common folk just don’t have the intellectual wherewithal to do it.
The concept of tenure puts these messed up totalitarian thoughts into their heads.
Tenure was originally meant to protect teachers with heterodox views I believe. There are none of those now, it seems.
Yup. Anybody with a different view can soon find themselves shunted aside, particularly when it comes to funding. Bringing in moolah is the only reason why many academics have their jobs in the first place.
Wow! He probably reached his “best before date” over a decade ago. Believes he can’t be fired, and probably gets a nice juicy pension. I wonder what he was “teaching”.
It took all of 5 seconds…. Then I started Laughing, have not quite finnished either…LMAO..
He belongs in outer space as Permanent Marker with a Bio Hazard symbol on his chest & sign that reads. Do not land on Earth – The AIR is POISONOUS..!!!
And this is why we NEED to Re-Introduce ASYLUMS for the INSANE
I’d love to see his “Rate My Professors” reviews.
The peak embodiment of FEAR. This man is CRIPPLED with FEAR. He actually believes the air is dangerous and the planet is collapsing, and there is more human suffering NOW, than any other time in history. Wow! A “professor” of WHAT? This man is a know-nothing FEAR-cripple. If this is what passes for “tenured professor” … then the entire higher education system needs to be scrapped and a new one created.
He makes the impression of a Woody Allen character in a pandemic satire that didn’t make it to the screen.
A description from his bio leads to the thought – Will anyone miss him and why would he be replaced? Time to defund the loonie left.
“Barry Mehler is a professor of humanities at Ferris State University in Michigan and the founder and executive director of the Institute for the Study of Academic Racism. The Institute monitors campus racism and serves as a resource center for legislators, civil rights groups, and journalists. Mehler is an expert on eugenics and the use of race science to support racist views and policies.”
